1 On Sight Computer Monitoring Software Quick Start Guide This document will assist you in installing and configuring On-Sight in your school. On-Sight allows school and district personnel to log, monitor and supervise student computer activity across their network. Getting Started Before installation, verify that your network and classroom computers meet the system requirements. Before you install On-Sight: Log on to the computer as administrator where the database (OSDB) being installed Exit all programs Note: If you are updating from a previous version of On- Sight, skip to C: Upgrading from a Previous Version Begin Installing On-Sight 1. Run the On-Sight Setup program. If you are installing from a file that you downloaded, open the folder where you saved the Setup program, and double-click ossetup.exe. If you are installing from a CD, insert the CD in the proper drive, point to the On-Sight icon, and select Install On-Sight. 2. Click Next to start the installation. 3. Read and accept the licensing agreement. 4. Enter the customer information. You do not need a serial number to install a trial version. Technical Support NORTH AMERICA Toll-Free Monday-Friday 7:30AM-4:30PM (Pacific Time) System Requirements Before you begin to install On-Sight, verify that your network and classroom computers meet all of the following system requirements. You must also have a valid serial number to fully activate On-Sight. You may install only a 3-client trial version without a serial number. Database Server 32-bit Windows 2000 (SP4) or 2003 (SP1) Server Windows 2000 (SP4), XP (SP2) or Vista (not Home) with the most recent service packs 1 GHz Pentium III class CPU or greater 512MB RAM or more 350MB Hard disk space (more required for data storage) Microsoft SQL or SQL Express Network The network must have the following minimum configuration: Wired Network: 10 Mbps full duplex; 100 Mbps or higher recommended Wireless Network: b/g Name Resolution (DNS or WINS) for all connected workstations Computers The classroom computers must have the following minimum configuration: Operating System: 32-bit Windows 2000, XP Pro or Vista (not Home) with the most recent service packs. Windows 98SE is supported on student computers. Processor: Intel Pentium III processor or equivalent; 500 MHz or higher Memory: 64 MB RAM; 128MB and higher recommended Video Display: Any 100% VGA compatible graphics adapter supported by Windows Note On-Sight requires that all connected computers be able to resolve network names of one another. IP addresses alone are not sufficient for full operation of the product. Any fully functional name resolution system is adequate (e.g. DNS, WINS).
2 Choose Installation Type or Upgrade Choose a simple or an advanced installation. If you are installing over a previous version of On-Sight, skip to C: Upgrading from a Previous Version. B: Advanced Installation Option Why use the advanced installation? Use the advanced installation if you have a large, centrally managed environment. We recommend installation of the database on a server that is available to the network at all times. Follow the appropriate instructions below for A: Simple Installation Option (trial installations and small networks) B: Advanced Installation Option (full installation) C: Upgrading from a Previous Version (upgrades) A: Simple Installation Option Why use the simple installation? Use the simple installation if you have a small network environment or you do not want to configure a server to test the product. The simple installation is an expedient way of getting On-Sight running on a standalone console. Who is most likely to use the simple installation? The simple installation is ideal for administrators and IT personnel who need to install the application on a standalone host workstation for test purposes. What is the end result of the simple installation? After installing the standalone console, the host workstation will contain the entire On-Sight database and will act as a viewer for the Student workstations that have the Client module installed. Simple Installation Instructions 1. Select Simple installation and click Next. 2. Select Standalone Console to install host components, and click Next. 3. When prompted, click Install to begin the simple installation of the following components on a single computer workstation or server: Microsoft SQL2005 Express Database On-Sight database schema (OSDB) On-Sight Database Administrator On-Sight Supervisor Console 4. Go to Install the Client (below) for instructions to install the Client module. Who is most likely to use the advanced installation? The advanced installation ins best used by information technology specialists or network administrators who have a solid understanding of servers and networks. What is the end result of the advanced installation? The advanced installation provides many different installation options and the end result will depend on your choices. At a minimum, the SQL database and schema will need to be installed before the other On-Sight application modules are useful. Note: Supported server platforms include Windows 2000 and 2003 servers. If you prefer using an existing Microsoft SQL installation, please contact GenevaLogic support for instructions. Advanced Installation Instructions Step 1: Server Setup The following steps install a Microsoft SQL server and On- Sight database on a server or workstation. 1. Select Advanced installation button and click Next. 2. At the next screen, choose the following components by selecting the checkboxes: 3. Database Server (MSSQL2005 Express) 4. Database Schema 5. Database Administrator 6. Click Next. 7. At the next screen, you can change the default installation path for the On-Sight Database Administrator 8. Click Next. 9. At the next screen, select Perform normal installation and click Install to complete the installation. Note: if the target computer does not have the Microsoft Windows Installer version 3.1 installed, the On-Sight installer will prompt you to install this component. The Windows Installer 3.1 is included in the On-Sight package and will be launched automatically. This action requires a restart, after which the On- Sight installer will have to be run again.
3 Advanced Installation Instructions Step 2: Database Administrator If you want to administer the On-Sight database from a computer other than the database server, complete the following steps: 1. Log in to the computer with credentials that share administrative privileges with the database server computer. 2. The group will now appear in the left pane of the On- Sight Supervisor Console below the Search group icon as shown below: 6. To rename the group, click the group icon in the left pane, select Edit and Rename from the Supervisor Console menu. Type in the new name and press ENTER.
8 Create Groups to View (cont d) Create a Group of Students 1. On the Supervisor Console, do one of the following: Select File, then New, and Student Group from the menu. Click the New Student icon on the toolbar. 2. In the Properties box, select the Members tab, and click Add. 3. Enter the login names of the students you wish to supervise separated by semi-colons. Click Check Names to verify these names in Active Directory. Note: If your network is configured without Active Directory, only local user names can be used since there is no central repository for user authentication. 4. Once you have verified the student names you wish to use, click OK. The selected student member list now populates the Group Members pane. Click OK to save. View Computers Viewing a group of computers with On-Sight is as simple as clicking one of the groups created earlier. Screen images of the student computers will immediately appear in the viewing area of the Supervisor Console. For more information, see the On-Sight online Help. Basic Troubleshooting Issue: The Clients cannot be seen in the Database Administrator; Client icons appear red in the system tray. Cause: The Client software is not properly communicating with the On-Sight database. Open the Client configuration by double clicking the system tray icon and enter the On-Sight client password (if any). The database server is displayed in the form: servername/onsight. Use the Browse button to the right of the database field to make certain that this server is found by the Client. If the Client cannot see the database server, there might be problems with name resolution on the network. Make certain your network is configured to allow the database server to resolve by name from all Client computers. To test this, attempt to ping the database server from the Client computers. If the name of the database server is properly resolved, check the SQL installation on that database server. Make certain that the MSSQL services are running and that the On-Sight database storage is properly installed. Removing and reinstalling the On-Sight database storage might resolve the issue. Issue: When launching the Database Administrator software, a message appears that indicates a database error. Cause: This usually indicates the current Windows login does not have administrative privileges on the database server. Logoff and login as a server administrator and run the application again Issue: The Database Administrator cannot connect to the database after updating. Cause: The database schema has not been updated. Run the database updaters as per the instructions in Upgrading from a Previous Version (above).
