1 CMP2203: Media Literacy Mon., Wed., & Fri. 1 1:50 A broad survey of the foundations of the mass media with particular attention devoted to structures of media, the impact of technological innovation, and evaluation of media sources. Topics covered include print, electronic, and digital journalism; radio, television, and film; advertising, book publishing, and public relations; and ethical, legal, and political issues relating to the mass media. 2 CMP 2205 Argumentation Dr. Sarah Partlow Lefevre Tuesdays & Thursdays 11am-12:15pm This course seeks to develop those skills of argumentation involved in effective reasoning and decision making. In developing these skills, we will study various types of arguments, note the tests to which each is susceptible, and analyze examples of arguments. Students will be expected to develop and understanding of the integral roles argumentation and rhetoric play in civic engagement and to develop the skills and vocabulary necessary to analyze arguments in the public sphere. Other topics covered in the course will include the ethics of advocacy, the types and tests of evidence, preparing a case, and adapting it to an audience.
3 CMP 3311 Public Affairs and Investigative Reporting Dr. Zac Gershberg Tuesdays and Thursdays 1-2:15 p.m. Examination of the processes of government at all levels from an investigative journalist's perspective. Students will employ advanced reporting and journalism skills in the production of in-depth stories in various formats. PREREQ: CMP 1110.
4 CMP 3346 Public Relations Writing Dr. Karen Hartman Mondays & Wednesdays 1-2:15pm Development of professional writing disciplines and skills expected of PR practitioners through exploration of various forms of public relations writing such as press releases, statements, public service announcements, media correspondence, media advisories, newsletter articles, fact sheets, and talking points. PREREQ: CMP 1110 and CMP 2241.
5 CMP 3365 Advertising Strategy Copywriting Dr. Martine Robinson Beachboard Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:30-10:45 a.m. We all see hundreds of advertisements every day. Some of them are brilliantly creative and strategically effective. Some are not. Learn how to develop the most persuasive messages with effective graphics, text, headlines and slogans. Build your portfolio and have fun doing it. Course catalog description: Overview of basic creative skills, with emphasis on how to write and develop strategic creative advertising messages for print, radio, television, and the Internet. Students begin to develop a marketing communication portfolio. Prerequisites: CMP 1110, CMP 2261, and CMP 2231, or MKTG 2225 or permission of instructor: beacmart@isu.edu.
6 CMP 4404/5504 Gender and Communication Dr. Sarah Partlow Lefevre Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:30-10:45am This course is designed to explore the concept of gender and its role in communication. Key goals include students ability to understand the difference between sex and gender, to recognize the role of social construction in gendered communication and to examine gendered communication in a variety of contexts including interpersonal relationships, the workplace, the classroom, the family, etc. Students will gain experience in critically analyzing and evaluating gender roles as expressed in various communication contexts.
7 CMP 4415 Television News Dr. Judith Morris Mondays & Wednesdays 1-2:50pm Writing, reporting, and producing the television newscast. Emphasis on proper technique as well as ethical and social issues. PREREQ: CMP 1110, CMP 2271, and CMP 3310 or CMP 3311.

10 CMP 4483/5583 Rhetoric of Popular Culture Dr. Nancy Legge Tuesdays & Thursdays 1-2:15pm Popular culture plays an important role in our lives: we go to movies, listen to music, watch television shows and the news, see advertisements, and surf the web. Because these things are so pervasive in our lives, we often don t even notice or pay attention to the ways that we are influenced by popular culture. This class looks at the various ways that popular culture influences us and our society and provides critical tools to help us understand and evaluate those influences.
11 CMP 4485/5585 Classical Rhetorical Theory Dr. Nancy Legge Tuesdays & Thursdays 11am-12:15pm This class explores the relationship between rhetoric and democracy. That is, one s ability to speak freely is directly related to the role of democracy in society. The class examines the foundations of this important relationship by studying the writings of Plato, Aristotle, and many Greek Sophists. We then consider what happens with rhetoric and free speech when democracy declines by exploring great Roman orators as well as thinkers in the Middle Ages.
12 CMP 6630 Media and Culture Dr. Zac Gershberg Tuesdays 5-7:30 p.m. Is the Medium the Message? Are we living in the Matrix? A graduate- level seminar, this course will examine competing theoretical perspectives with which to analyze the media and mass culture. A series of primary texts ranging from authors such as Marshall McLuhan and Theodor Adorno to Jean Baudrillard and bell hooks will cover media ecology, the Frankfurt School, postmodernism, and cultural studies. Students will have a research opportunity to deploy a theory of their choosing in order to study active economic, ideological, and/or technological influences across a variety of media phenomena.
