3 Association of the State of New York, 3 rd & 4 th District Dental Societies: NYSDA. Course Descriptions Balance? Our lives have become very busy and stressful. Time does not always allows our patients or us the ability to take optimum care of ourselves. Each time we eat, the balance of the oral cavity becomes acidic, and typically becomes neutral when saliva is flowing typically. However, what happens if no balance is reestablished? What do we as dental professionals do to help our patients cope and manage this disease process? What procedures, techniques and materials can we use the slow down the process and perhaps reverse it? How do we stop one step forward, two steps back game? This course will explore the whole basis of patient care including: cariology, preventive care, diagnostics, minimally invasive dentistry periodontal management, and how bioactive materials can and should be considered for use in your dental practice. Learn: The warning signs of imbalance in the oral cavity. What patients are most at risk for acid imbalance and damage. What happens when the acidity is not put in check. How MMP s are involved in the destructive process. What agents and materials are available to help bring things back in balance. Practically Speaking : What s New In Dentistry Today? The practice of dentistry is changing almost every day. Technology
4 is pushing the envelope of how we deliver and market dentistry. It sometimes feels like we can never keep up. Which of these new things are really going to help us provide great patient care? Some are must have while others are, well maybe not so much. How do you know what makes the best sense for your practice today? What could help you stand out from all the others? This course will explore the many innovations already available and those coming to your soon in dentistry, the various technologies, procedures, materials and new concepts you will need to know in order to stay ahead in these extraordinarily competitive and fast moving times. Review the upcoming trends in dentistry and how they will affect your practice. Preventive care considerations and diagnostics that will help you in the fight against caries and periodontal disease. Take a closer look at bonding in dental restorations. What s really going on? Identify the potential dangers of not staying up-to-date. Review materials to consider in order to provide improved care to your patients. Oral Cancer Detection: Are you seeing the whole picture? The worldwide annual incidence of Oral Cancer is greater than 300,000 Detection of this disease has typically occurred too late to implement treatment It is only through early detection that these rates can be improved
5 Oral cancer survival rates have not improved over the last 50 years. Why? Because we are not seeing the development of oral cancer until it becomes frankly apparent under our usual visible light observations. To further complicate this challenge, the classic population of at risk oral cancer patients have changed over the last few years, and suddenly the possibility of developing oral cancer is not just limited to tobacco users and people over age 40. Various technologies have been developed over the past 20 years and new ones are being developed. Each one aims to provide the ultimate goal: to help improve our ability to identify potential lesions well in advance of them becoming deadly. Some are more effective than others in this fight against cancer and new technologies are being developed. Learn: the oral anatomy, proper examination of the patient the challenges our profession has had in effectively identifying cancer in its earlier stages the various technologies currently available that can help in this identification so that you and your doctor will be able to improve the odds and help identify potential cancer lesions years before they can become cancer. what types of identification systems we may be employing in the near future.
