3 3 The history of the church ship In 1915 the old ship was taken down because the church had to be whitewashed inside a note was found in the ship s body. This ship was built by mate Christian Thomsen, Ketting, in about It was overhauled in 1818 by Joh. In February 2000 I wrote a little about the dilapidated ship in the store in the church bulletin. One of the reasons was that a picture of our wreck was shown in a new book about church ships in Haderslev diocese. A short time later I received a call from Jens Marcussen, he lived at Hundslevvej in Ketting he told me that he was building a ship for another church. It was a model of the Danish Frigate Jutland. The picture to the right shows the frigate Jutland placed in Voerladegaard church photo 20 th April When the frigate was delivered to the other church, Jens called me and said now I m ready for the next ship can I take it home now? The church ship Navy people agree that our church ship is a model of the navel ship: Norwegian Lion. Eleven ships have had this name. Here is the data from the ship we think is the right one. The naval ship Norwegian Lion was built at Nyholm close to Copenhagen in The ship was named after the lion in the Danish-Norwegian national arms; in 1772 it was renamed "Øresund". The ships length was 49 meters, it s beam was 9.7 m and she had a crew of 402 men. She was armed with 70 iron cannon placed on three decks. During the battle in Køge Bay on the 1 th July 1677 the ship had a crew of 568 men and was armed with 86 cannon. The ship took part in this victorious battle with Vice admiral Hendrick Span as chief. Afterwards the ship was used as guard ship in Øresund and other places. In 1789 it was guard ship for Russian ships in the Danish area. In 1795 it was changed to a block ship (rig and masts had removed) and was used to host families who have lost their homes during the big fire in Copenhagen the same year. After 1798 the ship was not used by the navy anymore. 4 4 The church ship December 2000 The old ship was dismantled, and Jens concluded that the condition was very bad full of worm holes and repaired with gypsum all over. It was impossible to restore the ship. Jens offered to build a copy of the old ship, where he would put in a few parts from the old ship. The figure head was reused. 5 5 The church ship February 2001 The old ship was photographed and measured, cross section drawings were made. In February Jens had the new hull ready on the slipway. The hull is built on ribs. 6 6 The church ship August 2001 In August 2001 the hull was finished with holes for the cannon ports......the main deck was installed There was a period, when Jens and his wife Anne moved from Ketting to Osbæk. 10 10 Sunday 18, February The ship expert from the church council Henning Thalund from Svendborg was invited; here he shakes hand with our shipbuilder Jens Marcussen in the background Anne Marcussen. Before the service at 10 o clock there was time for a cup of coffee and some ship talk. The weather was fine and we decided to carry the ship from the old school (built 1822) (the author lives there) to the church. Members of the local marine society carried the ship. Before the service at 10 o clock there was time for a cup of coffee and some ship talk.

11 11 At the door Jens Marcussen gave the ship to the church, represented by Minister Dan Sørensen and the chairman of the board Poul Steffen Dam. In a short speech he thanked Jens Marcussen for the ship. Some of the church visitors waited outside to see the event. Chairman Poul Steffen Dam thanked Jens Marcussen for the great gift. After the service the ships was placed behind the bars surrounding the altar. People had the opportunity to take a close look at all the impressive details. 13 13 The next day the ship was hung in the church... Jens Marcussen and Hardy Beck cooperated to find the ideal place to hang the ship. It was placed in the middle of the church a little to the left of the aisle.... Thanks to Jens Marcussen for the ship it s a gift we are very proud of more than 1000 hours of work has been put into it. To us it s important that a local person has done the work it signals an active parish backed up by people, who are prepared to spend some time on the church to make a difference!
