The repository is part of the new health care information system, the National Archive of Health Information (Kanta). This system includes the electronic prescription, Patient Data Repository and patient data management service, the Pharmaceutical Database and the My Kanta pages service.

2 Learn more about the Patient Data Repository What is the Patient Data Repository? The Patient Data Repository is a national repository service where health care service providers will store information on the treatment of patients. Improved information flow Having your health data stored in one place will improve the flow of information regarding your treatment. The doctors and nurses who treat you will be able to access your health data stored in the repository. By doing so, they can avoid redundant examinations and treatments. You have a say in who can access your health records Health care service providers that have registered themselves as users of the Patient Data Repository can use the patient data stored in the repository. Disclosing information from the repository to other health care service providers requires your consent. Without your consent, your data may only be disclosed in emergencies, when you are unable to give your consent due to unconsciousness or a similar reason. 2 National archive of health information

3 You can also forbid the disclosure of your data. In that case, your data will not be disclosed to anyone, even in emergencies. However, you may specifically allow the disclosure of your data in emergencies while forbidding it in any other case. You can give or withhold your consent for the disclosure of your health data at health care service providers or through the My Kanta pages service ( Your consent will be valid indefinitely and apply to all of your health data. You are free to withdraw your consent or lift your prohibition at any time. 4 National information system use The Patient Data Repository improves patient safety. Through the repository s patient data management service, health care providers will have access to your key health data, such as information on your medication, in one place. All consents and prohibitions you have issued regarding the handling of your data will also be stored in the repository, as will any advance directives you have given regarding your care. 4 National archive of health information

5 How to use My Kanta pages You can view your own electronic health records through this online service. The service is available to everyone aged 18 and above. Patient data will be stored in a national repository 5

6 A service for all citizens My Kanta pages at is a service for all citizens, which allows you to view your electronic health records and print a summary of them. Your records will become available through the service only after you have been treated by a health care provider. Through the service, you will be able to view your electronic prescriptions and health records. How do I log in? You can use your netbank codes to log into the My Kanta pages, or you can use an electronic identity card or a mobile certificate. Identifying yourself during login is equivalent to signing your name. Log into My Kanta pages using your netbank codes, electronic identity card or mobile certificate. If you have given your netbank codes to someone else or your bank account is in joint use, please contact your bank to request new codes, so that you can prevent others from accessing your health data. What information can I access through My Kanta pages? Through this service, you can view the information contained in electronic prescriptions issued for you. If you have never had an electronic prescription written for you, you will see text stating that you have no information registered in the service. Through My Kanta pages, you can also view your health data give consent to or prohibit the disclosure of your data keep track of the health care providers to whom your data have been disclosed. 6 National archive of health information

7 If electronic prescriptions have been issued for you and/or your health data have been stored in the central repository, you are entitled to verify your data stored in the Prescription Centre and Patient Data Repository have erroneous data rectified know which parties have handled and viewed your prescriptions. Your data will remain accessible through My Kanta pages for as long as they are stored in the Patient Data Repository. A secure service You use your netbank codes or electronic identity card to log into the My Kanta pages service. Please remember that these means of identification are personal. If you have a bank account in joint use, please contact your bank to request new codes so that you can prevent others from accessing your information. A log entry is recorded in the Prescription Centre or Patient Data Repository each time a health care unit or pharmacy accesses your information. This allows you to keep track of which pharmacies or health care units have handled your data. Computer not required If you do not have a computer or are otherwise not able to log into My Kanta pages, you are still entitled to verify your data stored in the Prescription Centre or Patient Data Repository. 8 What information will be available through My Kanta pages in the future? Electronic prescriptions can already be viewed through My Kanta pages. The Patient Data Repository will be implemented in phases. Public and private health care will begin storing patient data in the Patient Data Repository in stages, and all health care services will have adopted the Repository by From that time, you will be able to follow your medical appointments and diagnoses, among other things, through the service. 9 Your information is safe All patient data contained in the Patient Data Repository will be handled in a reliable and secure manner. Data communications between health care providers and the national repository are encrypted. No outsider will be able to gain access to your data. The only persons who will have access to your data stored in the repository are health care professionals participating in your treatment. The existence of a treatment relationship between yourself and the party requesting access to your data will be verified before disclosing the data. You will be able to examine the handling of your data retrospectively. Whenever a person retrieves your health data from the repository or discloses your data, an entry will be made in the Patient Data Repository. The Patient Data Repository will be implemented in stages The Patient Data Repository will be implemented in phases in various parts of Finland. Existing patient records will also be transferred to the repository in stages. During the early stages of repository use, patient records created before its adoption will not be transferred to the Patient Data Repository. For this reason, not all of your patient records will be available in the repository or accessible through My Kanta pages immediately. Patient data will be stored in a national repository 9
