Team leader of the Kenya stress management team to the United Nations Mission in Sierra- Leone. The team consisted of 3 senior psychiatrists, 3 clinical psychologists and Seven senior trauma counselors). During intense conflict in Sierra Leone in The team put in place innovative culturally appropriate interventions for individuals, groups and communities including Critical incident debriefing for traumatized troops, Capacity building in psychological debriefing skills to military Medical teams in the mission area (10 teams from Asia, Europe and Africa.) Counseling and individual psychotherapy for traumatized international staff. Initiation of radio programs on post conflict mental health problems for the populace of Sierra Leone, on radio Unamsil, broadcasting from Free Town twice a week. Initiation of child focused psychosocial programs for separated children and child soldiers, including: social reintegration, prevention of violence and peace education. Positive parenting, formal and non formal education, culturally appropriate celebrations, dance, art, music and story telling. Programs were also put in place. Peer networking, children's' rights were emphasized plus vocational training for youths and adolescents. The staff was also taught how to work with children and their self care. All the time emphasis was put on community ownership of programs, child safety and security plus cultural appropriateness, economic security and respect for the child and parent confidentiality.. The team also liased with allied United Nations Agencies and NGO s in the area on psychological needs of the various groups working in this deprived and unstable country. Has been attached as senior academician at the University of Cape Town while working at the Trauma Canter in Cape Town (the center for the survivors of torture and violence)

4 While at the trauma center I worked with victims of torture from South Africa s apartheid past, survivors of rape and gang violence and also with refugees from Congo and Mozambique. In Nairobi was involved in the initiation of emotional support center for HIV/AIDS clients at Forces Memorial Hospital -Nairobi Offering voluntary counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS services plus provision of anti retro viral drugs to clients. Done needs assessment and program evaluations for Kenya department of defense on mental health issues including drug and alcohol abuse. Worked as a team with South African, Ugandan; and Sierra Leone senior academics, social workers and psycho trauma psychologists in academic and therapeutic environments while in assignments in these countries...
