1 The University of Arizona Hispanic Alumni Scholarship Program for UA Graduate Students Scholarship Overview The University of Arizona Hispanic Alumni (UAHA) Scholarship Program for Graduate Students provides funding for full-time graduate or professional students to improve their potential for success at the University of Arizona. The program is funded by the Rotary Club of Tucson, the University of Arizona Graduate College and UAHA. There are seven (7) $4,000 awards available for the academic year. One (1) sponsored by the Chaprales/Rotary Club. Six (6) sponsored by the UA Graduate College and the UA Hispanic Alumni Club. Awards apply to UA base graduate tuition only. Eligibility Guidelines Applicants must meet the following guidelines: Students admitted to the College of Law, College of Medicine or a UA Online Master s Program are not eligible to apply. Student must be a full-time graduate Master s degree seeking gradute student during the academid year. Full-time = enrollment of least 9 units of graduate coursework. Student must be an Arizona resident. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and commitment to Hispanic heritage and serving the Hispanic community. Students who are receiving full-tuition scholarships, or tuition assistance through an undergraduate assistantship or a QTR (qualified tutition reduction) benefit are not eligible for this scholarship. 2 Requirements & Checklist To be eligible for the University of Arizona Hispanic Alumni Scholarship for Graduate Students, a student must: 1. Be a United States citizen or permanent resident. 2. Be an Arizona resident. 3. Be admitted to a Master s Degree program for the academic year by the time of application. 4. Submit a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the academic year. 5. Enroll as a full-time grduate student at the UA (full-time status requires enrollment and completion of a minimum of 9 gradute units per academic year). 6. Complete and submit this application for the UAHA Scholarship Program for Graduate Students (including all required documents) so they are postmarked by no later than Monday, February 29, Application materials will not be returned after submission. Please remember to make a copy of the entire application for your records. Students admitted to the College of Law, College of Medicine or UA Online Master s program are not eligible to apply. This scholarship is open to all without regard to race, ethnicity, national origin or other protected categories, in compliance with the University s Non-Discrimination Policy [ Complete ALL STEPS of the application using the checklist below. Tell us your professional aspirations and your plan to achieve them. QUESTION 3 - INVOLVEMENT In your life experiences - family, school, work, church, community, etc. - where and how did you get involved, and/or take responsibility to make a difference? Describe your plans to give back or assist underrepresented communities. QUESTION 4 - PERSONAL ASSESSMENT Describe in detail 2 positive aspects of yourself and how those aspects will help you succeed professionally. Describe in detail 2 personal shortcomings and how you plan on addressing those shortcomings in order to succeed professionally. QUESTION 5 - CHALLENGES Describe in detail an instance in which you faced substantial adversity and succeeded despite such adversity. QUESTION 6 - SUMMARY Provide any additional information you believe is important to share with the scholarship committee (extraordinary circumstances, family, challenges, personal successes, obstacles you have overcome, etc.). 5 Supplemental Materials Please collect the materials below and include them with the documents submitted from steps 1 and 2. Remember that your application will be reviewed only if you complete all steps and all documents are submitted together and postmarked by no later than Monday, February 29, STEP 3 SUPPLEMENTALS TRANSCRIPT Please submit an official copy of transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended. Please include the transcript with your application. RESUME AND LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION Please submit one (1) letter of recommendation from a professor, employer, or another profession that may speak to your strengths and challenges, and should be someone you trust to complete the recommendation in a timely manner. Please provide the letter on page 7 and the form on page 8 to your recommender. Please submit a copy of your resume. FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA) You must file your FAFSA on or after January 1, 2016 and no later than March 1, 2016 to be considered for this scholarship. Submit a FAFSA online: Indicate the University of Arizona as your school of choice (use code ). If possible, please file by February 14, 2016 (the UA s priority date) to ensure you are reviewed when the University has the most federal money available for students. Through the UA Hispanic Alumni Scholarship Program, our organization provides mentoring, networking and financial assistance to any student committed to serving the Hispanic community.
