AGENDA TYPES OF SURGERIES COMPLICATIONS EXPECTATIONS NEXT STEPS QUESTIONS FAST FACTS SSM WEIGHT LOSS INSTITUTE ASSESSMENT DAY
ALL THREE SURGERIES Are considered major surgery Are laparoscopic procedures (using small incisions) Are excellent tools for weight loss Are tools that can be broken Can have complications- both short and long term Create internal scarring
ROUX-EN-Y GASTRIC BYPASS (RYGB) The stomach is divided and a small pouch is formed. A portion of the small intestine is then divided and sewn to the newly created small pouch. This process limits the amount of food consumed and the body s ability to absorb calories
SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY The surgeon removes approximately 85% of the stomach, with the remaining part of the stomach shaped like a tube or sleeve. This process limits the amount of food consumed at one time.
ADJUSTABLE GASTRIC BANDING The adjustable gastric band artificially reduces the capacity of the stomach. The silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch. Food passes through the outlet from the upper pouch to the lower pouch to the lower stomach more slowly to help feel fuller longer.
POTENTIAL BARIATRIC COMPLICATIONS RYGB/SLEEVE Gastric Leak Stricture Gastro Gastric Fistula Gallstones Gastric Ulcers ADJUSTABLE GASTRIC BAND Slippage Prolapse Erosion Gallstones Gastric Ulcers
