4 OBF Mission The mission of the Office of Business and Finance is to provide leadership and stewardship over WMU's fiscal, physical, and human capital so that all members of the University community can accomplish their learning, teaching, research and public service goals in safe, healthy, sustainable and attractive settings at reasonable costs. OBF Vision Business and Finance will be the foundation that advances the University s mission and vision. We will Exceed expectations as an integrated partner with campus and the community; Shape Western s culture by valuing an individual s uniqueness, celebrating differences, pursuing equity, fostering human dignity, acting with integrity, and promoting personal development Positively impact life at the University by being thought leaders at all levels and engaged members of the campus community 2
5 Business Services: Our Mission - Vision - Goals Vision Clients Goal Process Goal Resource Goal Support the University in all of its endeavors by expanding our services beyond traditional risk management. 1. All staff, faculty, and students actively practice risk management and loss avoidance 2. Identify and mitigate emerging risks 3. Ensure business continuity through proactive staff and revenue stream development 4. Effective contract management for university non-grant and sponsored contracts Mission The mission of Business Services is to care for the University through effective risk and contract management. 3
6 GOAL 1: All staff, faculty, and students actively practice risk management and loss avoidance 1. Objective a. Action Item Target Date Responsible Resources needed 1. Develop an education plan to educate staff, faculty, and students on mitigating risk and loss. The education plan should address: a. Describe areas in which staff, faculty, and students benefit from risk management (e.g., sexual harassment) Plan in place by July 2013 Updates are ongoing Laura Vine and Tim Kellogg M.U.S.I.C. b. Explain how a loss could personally affect members of the WMU community (e.g., financial and career implications) c. Demonstrate what they can do to mitigate losses d. Teach how they can avoid doing things that cause losses e. Identify educational venues f. Expand services to students 2. Track and report to the WMU community outstanding contributions by faculty, staff, and students to risk management and loss avoidance a. Positive feedback from University for contract flow and process improvements. Populate Business Services website with useful Risk Management information and update what is currently there. Operational Perspective Complete Risk Assessment for emerging risks and discuss with departments. Continue leadership role in M.U.S.I.C. Improve rent revenue stream by 5-10% annually. 6
