2 A Message from Our Chairman At Genworth, we ve made a promise to help millions of people around the world secure their financial lives, families and futures. We do so through the products and services we provide and through our commitment to make a difference in the communities in which we live and work. The Genworth Foundation invests in organizations that are shaping a brighter future for underserved youth through mentoring and after-school programs; caring for older adults by providing access to information on health and aging, supporting caregivers and enabling independent living; and helping provide what s needed through tough times and natural disasters. Our efforts are complemented by the dedication of hundreds of partner organizations and agencies who work diligently every day to identify and fill needs in our communities. Our actions are fueled by the passion of our 6,400 employees across 25 countries. The enthusiasm and impact of their efforts has been truly remarkable as they have offered their time, energy, creativity and expertise dedicating thousands of volunteer hours to help our neighbors in need. 3 The Genworth Foundation is committed to improving the world around us by investing in organizations that are making a difference in communities where we live and work. We make direct investments in the community through charitable grants and matching gifts each year. Providing grants to nonprofit organizations around the globe to help enrich the lives of our neighbors, support bold ideas, promote collaboration and make a long-term impact, we focus on three key areas: 1 Shaping a Brighter Future Young people are the promise of the future, and the Genworth Foundation has a focused commitment to help students strengthen their academic performance, build life skills and improve financial literacy. 2 Caring for Older Adults As the population of adults who are age 65 and older increases, we are helping local communities prepare for the growing age wave. We fund programs that provide access to information on health and aging, offer support for family caregivers, and enable independent living. We are especially compassionate for those suffering from Alzheimer s disease and those who care for them. 3 Helping Provide What s Needed We align with local and global organizations to support the delivery of temporary food, shelter and clothing. We also invest in key partnerships to keep families in their homes and help prevent foreclosures during times of economic distress. 2

5 Shaping a Brighter Future Genworth employees believe that mentoring and tutoring underserved youth is one of the most effective ways to make a difference in a child s life and establish the foundation for future success. We commit our time and dollars to brighten the future for hundreds of students each year, especially those most at risk of academic failure and dropping out of school. GenPals Big Reveal Studies show that elementary school students benefit significantly from having a pen pal from improving reading and writing skills to relationship building and social development. Our GenPals program does just that. GenPals matches students in Richmond and Lynchburg, Virginia with a Genworth volunteer. The pals correspond monthly discussing what s going on in the student s life, school work and plans for the future. The Genworth volunteers mentor the students and foster a positive environment for the students to practice their writing skills. After a year of exchanging cards and letters, students receive an opportunity to meet their GenPals in person at a Big Reveal Lunch Event in May. Students and teachers are treated to lunch and a tour of the Genworth facility to see what it s like in the workplace. Our students really enjoyed their Genpals letters. 7 Shaping a Brighter Future The Power of Mentoring Middle School Renaissance Genworth and other leading Richmond, Virginia companies are working together to support Richmond City Public School s Middle School Renaissance program. In 2011, 20 volunteers dedicated more than 200 hours mentoring and tutoring underserved 6th grade students throughout the school year. Partnering Throughout the Year Johnson Elementary School As part of Genworth s ongoing commitment to help address the needs of underserved schools, Genworth regularly partners with Johnson Elementary in Richmond, Virginia. More than 50 Genworth employees volunteer to support students throughout the school year by mentoring through the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program and providing financial education in conjunction with Junior Achievement of Central Virginia. In the spring of 2011, the annual field day at Johnson Elementary School was in jeopardy. The school s playing fields were under construction and not suitable for the day s events. Fortunately, the Genworth Headquarters campus was nearby, offering an ideal location for the event and plenty of volunteers. Genworth was pleased to host the 500 students and faculty, providing more than 70 volunteers and covering the cost of the event. Field day attractions included 19 different activity stations, a misting tent, snow cones and a visit from Radio Disney to encourage students to put on their dancing shoes. Building a trusting relationship with a young adult and encouraging them to see their future as one filled with possibilities and options is not only tremendously satisfying and fun, but I ve found (unexpectedly) that those conversations actually rejuvenate my own perceptions of my future and how lucky I am. It s really true that with mentoring you will almost certainly receive significantly more than you expend! 9 Shaping a Brighter Future Putts4Charity Through the support of our Putts4Charity initiative, the Genworth Foundation donated nearly 200,000 in 2011 to benefit SOS Children s Villages in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and Sweden, as well as Barnardo s Children s Charity in Ireland. Money was raised at various golf events throughout the year. For example, in the spring, eight leading European Tour professionals were put to the test ahead of the 2011 Portugal Masters and succeeded in raising 45,000 through the Genworth Putts4Charity Pro Champions Challenge. The real winners from Putts4Charity were the more than 600 at-risk children and young adults living in SOS Children s Villages across Europe. SOS Children s Villages, an internationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children reach their full potential, utilized funding to support essential educational programs and teaching materials all building blocks for a successful future. SOS Children s Villages prepares at-risk children to become independent, financially stable adults who are involved with their communities. The Genworth Foundation s support of SOS educational programs throughout Europe provides these children with a bridge to stability, thus helping to break the cycle of poverty. 10 55 The percentage of Genworth employees from around the world who participated in volunteer activities during our annual Global Month of Service in June 2011 Reach Out, Give Back and Have Fun, is the motto that Genworth employees have adopted to support their volunteer activities throughout the year. Additionally, the company recognizes June as the Global Month of Service, providing organized, often on-campus, activities that encourage employees to take time to volunteer. Stand-out examples of Month of Service activities include partnerships with the HandsOn Network and Stop Hunger Now. 9

11 Caring for Older Adults We are focused on helping to ensure that the older adults in our communities receive the care that they deserve. We fund programs that provide access to information on health and aging, offer support for family caregivers and enable independent living. Playing an Active Role Supporting Older Adults The Genworth Foundation supports the critical role that adult care facilities and other senior serving organizations fill in our society today. In Virginia, specifically the Richmond and Lynchburg areas, and in Raleigh, North Carolina; Genworth senior leaders share their knowledge and experience by serving on the board of directors for each of these agencies: Adult Care Center of Central Virginia A Grace Place Center for Volunteer Caregiving Circle Center Adult Day Services Lynchburg Area Center for Independent Living Older Dominion Partnership The Capital Area Agency on Aging Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging As Chairman of the Board of Circle Center Adult Day, I get to bring my talents and the Genworth Foundation s support to a first class organization that helps older adults maintain as much independence as possible and to live with dignity and purpose. In return, I get to learn firsthand what s required to deliver long term care services to the community, which allows me to better serve our customers. 13 Caring for Older Adults Alzheimer s Association and the Walk to End Alzheimer s TM As a leader in the long-term care insurance industry, Genworth has seen firsthand through our policyholder claims the devastation, both emotional and financial, that Alzheimer s disease and its associated dementias have caused millions of Americans and their families. That is why Genworth and the Genworth Foundation are proud to support the Alzheimer s Association and the annual Walk to End Alzheimer s. In 2011, Genworth employees organized 108 teams (more than 1,000 walkers) and raised $118,045 to help the cause. In our San Rafael, California office, representing a contingent of our Long Term Care Insurance Claims team a group who hears from the families of those afflicted by this incurable disease every day laced up their walking shoes to participate in walks in San Francisco and Petaluma. They also held a bake sale and auction that raised $3,000 in individual contributions. That s just one example of how Genworth employees volunteer to support and participate in walks across the country each year. Today, 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer s disease 5.2 million aged 65 and over; 200,000 with younger-onset Alzheimer s. By 2050, as many as 16 million Americans will have the disease. Two-thirds of those with the disease 3.4 million are women. Of Americans aged 65 and over, 1 in 8 has Alzheimer s and nearly half of people aged 85 and older have the disease. Another American develops Alzheimer s disease every 69 seconds. In 2050, an American will develop the disease every 33 seconds. Source: Alzheimer s Association Factsheet March

15 Helping Provide What s Needed At Genworth, we believe in supporting organizations that provide safe and affordable homes and that meet other critical basic needs, such as food and clothing. Our mission to do so has reached into our local communities around the globe. Building Five Homes Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island At Genworth, we provide mortgage insurance that helps consumers achieve home ownership. We know the importance of, and take to heart, helping people get in and stay in their homes. In 2011, we were proud to be one of several companies partnering with Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island, Canada to help build five homes, providing even more families the opportunity to enjoy home ownership. It was a great day of fun and partnership. One of our lending partners enjoyed it so much they have started to look into hosting their own Adopt-a-Day build day. Ruth Roussy, Vice President, Atlantic, Genworth Financial Canada, Mortgage Insurance Genworth volunteers, Ruth Roussy and Chris Johnson, pictured, invited ten customers including brokers, mortgage specialists and retail branch lenders to help with the build. Throughout the day, the group worked on three Charlottetown builds sites that were all being completed at the same time and on the same street. Additionally, they were able to present a check for CAD $6,000 to support additional 2011 Habitat for Humanity build initiatives. Genworth volunteers also helped Habitat for Humanity in Lynchburg and Richmond, Virginia; Raleigh, North Carolina; Pleasant Hill, California; Stamford, Connecticut; Poland and Great Britain. 17 Helping Provide What s Needed Helping the Disabled Forsight Foundation In Sydney, Australia, Genworth volunteers spent a day repainting the home of four residents who have a range of sensory disabilities and are being assisted by the Forsight Foundation. The Foundation works with its disabled residents and their families, currently operating eight homes for 34 disabled adults in the western and north western areas of Sydney. Twenty volunteers from Genworth divided into three teams, with the responsibility of painting three bedrooms and two living rooms. The volunteers enjoyed the opportunity to spend time together, build rapport and participate in some friendly competition. What they found to be most impactful however, was watching the reaction of the four residents and their caregivers who were delighted with the fresh, brighter living environment. We had all been having fun throughout the day, but it was the moment that Coral walked in to the freshly painted room and her face lit up. It s very powerful when you can help people who are less fortunate than yourself. It s an implicitly rewarding thing. Miles Burge, HR Director, Genworth, Sydney, Australia United Way Through our partnership with United Way, we have been able to provide health, safety and education to thousands of people in our local areas. During our 2011 U.S. United Way campaign, our employee participation grew to 54 percent (up seven percent from the prior year) raising over $1 million to assist those in need. Additionally, the Genworth Foundation, Genworth Canada and its employees across the country contributed CAD $117,204 to help the United Way address the most pressing issues in local communities. 16

19 Recognizing Our 2011 Volunteer of the Year We would like to introduce Irene O Sullivan, our 2011 Volunteer of the Year. Irene based in Shannon, Ireland is an audit consultant for Genworth Lifestyle Protection Insurance. Irene is an example to us all passionate about the value of volunteering and the difference that we each can make as individuals and as a team. She is recognized by her peers as demonstrating great compassion. And, clearly, she s a leader encouraging and supporting other volunteers and charities. In 2011, Irene organized 18 events supporting eight local charities, including the Pieta House a suicide and self harm crisis center. She successfully engaged 300 volunteers who contributed 800 volunteer hours. Irene is credited with project managing Shannon s, biggest volunteer painting project. Over five days, 35 volunteers dedicated 175 hours painting The Home for the Elderly. The volunteers went beyond the call of duty; not alone did they paint the ceilings, doors, skirting boards and walls but they also left the house tidy and washed floors etc. We will be forever indebted for your wonderful gift to us.
