2 Training Topic: New Webelos Leader Guide Book Presented By: Alicia Chadwick In the Webelos Den Leader Guide there are different ideas and examples you will find very helpful to your Cub Scout program. I suggest you use the Leader Guide to help you plan and put on a successful Webelos program. Overview of the Program This first section goes over the purpose, the oath, the law, the history and it being a positive place for the boys to be. In this section, the book goes through the Scout Oath and Law piece by piece. It gives you help in explaining and teaching both to the boys. It breaks down both with definitions and what each part means. Delivering the Cub Scout Program The next section goes through the key roles found in Cub Scouts. This section has information for leaders and their responsibilities. It also lists the leadership roles that boys can hold in the Cub Scout program. It also lists the required training all leaders are required to complete to be a trained leader. There are different resources listed in this section also that can help you have a successful Webelos program, including using your Cubmaster to help with your program. There is also has a list of your responsibilities to the Cub Scouts. Advancement The next section is about advancement. It has guidelines as to how and when to recognize the boys for their accomplishments. It goes over how the advancement program works, which includes the responsibilities for the Den Leaders, Cubmasters, and Pack Committee. It also has a helpful section on how fast the boys should advance and a checklist has been provided to help you with the advancement in your den. The first rank each boy is required to earn in the Bobcat. These requirements are listed in this section. The change in advancement in the new program is the boys are not required to earn the Webelos Badge before the Arrow of Light Badge. The requirements for each of those badges are found in this section also. This section has a list of the required Adventures for each Badge along with a list of the Elective Adventures the boys can earn. For the Webelos and the Arrow of Light Badges, you are required to complete 7 different Adventures for each badge for a total of 14. There are many different ways to accomplish the requirements with the boys. The keys to a successful program are preparing, evaluating, executing and modifying your plan. The most important thing to have is an outline of how you re going to accomplish the Adventures. Remember that there are requirements that the parents need to help with throughout the Adventures. Den Meetings The parts of the den meeting are preparation, gathering, opening, talk time, activities, closing and after the meeting. Preparation is the key to holding a successful den meeting. Having gathering activities will keep the boys occupied as everyone arrives for den meeting. The opening is the beginning of the meeting. A typical opening will have a prayer, flag ceremony and the boys will recite the Scout Oath and Law. Talk time should be kept short, this may include announcements of upcoming activities, this time could also be used to explain what you were going to be doing and giving the

3 boys instructions for the current meeting. Activities is the heart of the den meeting and pretty selfexplanatory. During the Closing is where you wrap up the Den Meeting. After the meeting is when the refreshments or snacks would be served and is a time for you to communicate with the parents as what was accomplished or what the boy might need to finish up at home. This section also talks about Den Meeting plans, Character Compass, Do At Home Projects, Your First Den Meeting and Den Outings. Working With Cub Scout-Age Boys This section has different topics that can help you be a successful leader. It even has a section to help with boys with special needs. Helpful Hints for Den Leaders Planning, Den Rules, Duty to God, Ceremonies, Immediate Recognition, Missed Meetings, Snacks/ Treats, Den Scrapbook, Tracking and Success are the different topics found here. Moviemaking Project Family Sportsman In the Webelos Leader Guide you will find a complete plan as to how you can accomplish each Adventure. It gives you the rationale, what the cub scouts are to learn from the adventure and the requirements for the Adventure. For each meeting it gives a list of materials needed, ideas for the gathering, what to do during the opening ceremony, examples of what to cover during talk time, activities for the Den Meeting, ideas for the closing ceremony and what to do after the meeting. Each Adventure also includes a list of resources you might need. Each section contains Notes to Den Leader which gives some hints and helps when planning your Adventure. Appendix I think the Appendix is the best part of the Webelos Leader Guide. It has many different ideas for activities and helps you will need for your program. In the Appendix you will find helps and ideas for Gathering Activities, Opening, Closing and Flag Ceremonies Ideas, Den Outing Ideas, Working with Boys, Crafts, Games, Outdoors, Resource Guide for Aquatic Activities, Leader Helps, Awards and Additional Resources. At the very back of the Webelos Leader Guide you can find the Official Placement of Insignia.

4 Webelos Topic: Webelos Walkabout Presented By: Ben Oliphant REQUIREMENT 1: Plan a hike (create a hike plan). It has been suggested you can use www. tooelecountytrails.com. You could use a map from Google Maps. Print it so your boys have copies. You could use a compass and a map instead of a GPS on smartphone. Requirement 6 states that a map and compass are a part of a Scout s Basic Essentials. Help the boys fill out the hike plan (page 101). REQUIREMENT 2: Assemble a hiking first aid kit. This is the kit each boy should have with them. It should be light and small and still have some help for minor first aid needs. The Webelos den should have a den kit for the first aid leader (see requirement 8). You as the Scout Leader may want one to carry, just in case. I keep one in my hiking pack and it mostly has creams and Band-Aids. REQUIREMENT 3: Poisonous Plants and Dangerous Animals. The book has a few examples of poisonous plants, poison ivy, poison oak, & poison sumac. These are the ones that are bad to just brush against. The plant that has hurt me the most while hiking is Stinging Nettle. It is a good idea to find pics of it too. Dangerous animals include venomous snakes. In Utah, they are Rattle Snakes. There are 9 different kinds of Rattle Snakes according to the USU Extension. They all have rattles and give fair warning. Look, but don t touch, is the best way to handle all snake encounters. Some other animals to make your Webelos aware of are: Skunks, raccoons, rodents of all sizes, deer, moose, cows, pigs, horses, and big dogs. These are often more dangerous than any snake. The poisonous spiders in Utah are the Black Widow and the Funnel Web Spider. The Funnel Web Spider has quite a few different names, brown recluse, fiddleback spider, hobo spider. Spider bites may need medical attention. Which brings us to the really dangerous insects of wasps, hornets, & bees. Because of allergic reactions, there stings can be really scary for some Scouts. Be prepared for your Scouts, if they have these allergies. Last, but not least, Tics and Chiggers. REQUIREMENT 4 Prepare a lunch, enjoy on hike, clean up afterwards. I think there is nothing wrong with any food you can carry and eat cold, like a sandwich, apple, string cheese, roll-ups, etc. You can get together with your Webelos and make trail mix with their favorite snack stuff, or just take granola bars or fruit snacks. Enjoy what you bring, but make sure to leave the place cleaner than you found it. REQUIREMENT 5 Recite the outdoor code and Leave no Trace for kids. This is the same as requirement 7 in the Camper Adventure. Helping your Webelos know and use this will pass off 2 requirements. They are both in the back of the Webelos Handbook (552 last page). So is the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics website: REQUIREMENT 6 Do a 3 mile hike. Some ideas for a hike could be a penny hike. Have the boys find things on the trail that would fit on a penny. A paint chip hike is matching colors found in nature on your hike to paint chip samples (We made our own using cardstock).

5 Arrow of Light Topic: Build My Own Hero Presented By: Debby Martin Requirement 1: Local Hero s Definition: Someone who does extra-special things to help other people Firemen Policemen Sheriff Ambulance drivers Paramedics Emergency doctors and nurses Soldier Someone you know that has saved someone Helicopter medics Requirement 2: How Citizens can be heroes The Webelos Handbook page 310 has some great examples about how everyday people are heroes to get the boys thinking The Webelos Leader Guide on page 173 has a great game for this requirement called Scout Law Hero Game. (Spinner included in this handout) Another option is looking in the newspaper for acts of heroism - don t forget pets and police dogs Requirement 3: My Hero Award Ideas You can combine this with your visit to a hero and have the boys give their Hero Awards to the person you visit for requirement #1. If they want to give the award to someone else, consider inviting their hero choice to pack meeting and presenting the awards to them in front of the whole pack. What an honor that would be for someone that has done so much. 6 Requirement 4: Heroes from around the world These websites have some awesome everyday heroes. To save time, have a couple stories ready before your den meeting to share. 10 Lifesaving Heroes From Around The World This website has pictures of most of the people or where the event happened with short inspiring stories of everyday people doing great things. 10 Inspiring Real Life Super Heroes Around the World Who Have Made It Their Mission To Help Others This website has everyday people that dress up as superheroes and walk the streets helping others. They give out food to the homeless, give first aid kits to drug addicts, inspires others to stay away from crime, stops vandalism and protect their streets. 10 Inspiring Stories of Everyday Heroes This website has everyday heroes that had something happen to them that inspired them to help others in similar situations. Requirement 5: A Scout Hero This requirement was easy and fun! Go to the Boys Life Scouts-In-Action comics website at: The Boys Life has Scouts that have done heroic things in comic strips every month. You can find them all on the online version of Boys Life going all the way back to January Print out a couple and let the boys choose which one they would like to read about. This month in the Scouting magazine in the very back is also a Scouters in Action comic about a Scout leader that has been a hero as well. Requirement 6: Create your own superhero What can be more fun than creating your own superhero! After you have talked about real life super powers they can make up their own in any way they want. It could be someone that flies around looking for fires and then puts them out shooting water from their wrists or any other creative ideas they can come up with. Check out the ideas in the Webelos Leader Guide on page 174 on ways to make this a den activity and how to make a story for the den super hero Or, how to do this activity in pairs where they trace each other on large butcher paper and then each boy draws a costume in their outline for their superhero with the super powers written around the outline. If the boys want to each do their own superheroes you can make an 8 1/2 x 11 poster with a box at the top for their drawing and some lines underneath for the list of super powers.

8 Scout Law/Theme: Brave/Super Cub! Celebrating Pack Heroes Ideas on how to thank the pack heroes. Brainstorm ways to make handmade awards for them. Be creative! Here are some examples: Spark Plug Award, a spark plug glued to a wooden plaque for someone who adds spark to pack activities Helping Hand Award, a small glove on a plaque for someone who always helps out Golden Knot Award, a rope tied into a square knot and glued on a plaque for the Cubmaster, pack leaders, den leaders, or anyone else who teaches knot-tying Big Heart Award, a heart-shaped object for someone who puts his or her heart into the Cub Scouting program Tea-riffic Award, a teabag stapled onto a paper circle with ribbons hanging below so it looks like a medal Lifesaver Award, a package of Life Saver candies glued on a plaque for someone who stepped in to help when the pack or a den faced a crisis Crossover Connection Award, two carabiners linked together on a plaque for a leader who helps secondyear Webelos Scouts prepare for their Webelos-to-Scout transition Bright Idea Award, a tiny light bulb glued on a plaque for someone who always has good ideas Golden Spoon Award, a gold plastic spoon tied with ribbons for the blue and gold banquet coordinator HEROES FLAG CEREMONY The colors advance in the normal manner. A spotlight shines on the flag while a hidden narrator speaks. Narrator: Heroes, with help from God, have kept me flying even when I am faced with threats and challenges to the democratic way of life I represent. I symbolize all the achievements of a great nation founded for freedom. I am the last hope of peace on Earth. I am the American Flag. Cubmaster: Will the audience please rise and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance to be followed by singing God Bless America. Cheer or Applause High-Definition Applause: The group yells several times, Brave and loyal, strong and true! Superhero Applause: Hold arms out in front and upward and yell, Fly into action, superhero! Skit SUPERHEROES HALL OF FAME SKIT Setting: Several Cub Scouts pretend to be superheroes in a hall of fame. Two volunteers (one preferably an adult) will be visitors there. Let the Scouts pick out superheroes to impersonate, but one of them must be Aquaman. Backstage, just before walking out, Aquaman takes a gulp of water and holds it in his mouth. The Cub Scouts line up in front of the audience with Aquaman at the end. Action: Call a planted volunteer out of the audience and tell him you will be touring the Superhero Hall of Fame. As you go down the line, tap or hit each Cub Scout to start that hero into action. Each boy will impersonate the character: Superman acts as if he were flying, the Flash as if he were running, and so forth down the line. At the end of the line, Aquaman gets tapped, but does nothing. You turn to the adult volunteer and ask him to help you. Then pump Aquaman s arms as if he were an old-fashioned well. Aquaman then turns to the volunteer and sprays water into the air. The visitors run to avoid getting sprayed.
