1 1 THE HEART OF HOPE April -May-June 2014 Inside this issue: Book Review 2 Indianapolis Area Upcoming Events Muncie & Lafayette Upcoming Events The Mourner s Bill of Rights Bereavement Team Contact Information A Note From the Bereavement Team Greetings! Inside this issue you will find 2 pages of listings for upcoming grief support groups, workshops, and events in the Indianapolis, Muncie, and Lafayette areas. In an attempt to best meet your unique grief needs, the bereavement team welcomes your suggestions for any future groups or workshops. Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have an idea for future group development. We look forward to your feedback! Spring Forward I am emerging from despair of death into the Spring of new life. Light green and yellow is everywhere. I see light green grass Daffodils and crocus pushing their way through the snow. Snow I am so ready for Spring For new beginnings For Renewal For hope in the future. My heart is still tight-wrapped in death and afraid to open. God be my strength Be my sunlight and water Help to prepare me for newness and life. Be my guide and protector along the seasons of grief. By Lori J. Mercer Bereavement Specialist

2 Book Review The Invisible String By Patrice Karst 2 The Invisible String is a gentle story about love and connection. It encourages both adults and children to honor the connection that we have to those we love, even after they are gone. The premise of the story follows two children who are told about The Invisible String made of love that connects our hearts to the hearts of people we love. I often encourage family members who have young children to read this book together and talk about the child s invisible string. Some questions to ask your child when reading this book might include: Where does your invisible string go? Who is your string connected to? How can you tell when someone tugs on your string? Do you think (deceased person) can feel you tug on his/her string? Do you have something you might want to tell (deceased person) right now? Are there other times you might use your string to help you feel better? For more suggestions of age-appropriate books for children and teens, please contact a bereavement coordinator. We have many recommendations and suggestions that might fit very well with your child/family needs.

5 5 The Mourners Bill of Rights By Alan Wolfelt, PhD, CT 1. You have the right to experience your own unique grief. 2. You have the right to talk about your grief. 3. You have the right to feel a multitude of emotions. 4. You have the right to be tolerant of your physical and emotional limits. 5. You have the right to experience griefbursts. 6. You have the right to make use of ritual. 7. You have the right to embrace your spirituality. 8. You have the right to search for meaning. 9. You have the right to treasure your memories. 10. You have the right to move toward your grief and heal. (reprinted with permission from With these rights in mind, have you given yourself permission to explore the many different emotions that accompany loss? Have you experienced a griefburst? (A griefburst has been described as an intense rush of sadness that comes out of nowhere ) If you have experienced someone attempting to offer you advice on how to grieve, perhaps you can show them this list and encourage them to be a companion as you grieve. For more information on the needs of mourning and Dr. Wolfelt s model of Companioning the Mourner, please visit The act of living is different all through. Her absence is like the sky, spread all over everything. -C.S. Lewis, A Grief Observed
