1 Fees and costs VicSuper FutureSaver Member Guide Date prepared 1 July 2016
2 The information in this document forms part of the VicSuper FutureSaver Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) dated 1 July DID YOU KNOW? Small differences in both investment performance and fees and costs can have a substantial impact on your long-term returns. For example, total annual fees and costs of 2% of your account balance, rather than 1%, could reduce your final return by up to 20% over a 30-year period (for example reduce it from $100,000 to $80,000). You should consider whether features such as superior investment performance or the provision of better member services justify higher fees and costs. Your employer may be able to negotiate to pay lower administration fees. Ask the fund or your financial adviser.* TO FIND OUT MORE If you would like to find out more, or see the impact of the fees based on your own circumstances, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) website ( has a superannuation calculator to help you check out different fee options. * Not applicable: VicSuper s fees and costs are not negotiable. VicSuper FutureSaver Fees and other costs This document shows fees and other costs that you may be charged. These fees and other costs may be deducted from your money, from the returns on your investment or from the assets of the superannuation entity as a whole. Other fees, such as activity fees, advice fees for personal advice and insurance fees, may also be charged, but these will depend on the nature of the activity, advice or insurance chosen by you. Taxes, insurance fees and other costs are set out in another part of this document. You should read all the information about fees and other costs because it is important to understand their impact on your investment. The fees and other costs for the Growth (MySuper) Option are set out below. The fees and other costs for each investment option offered by VicSuper are set out below. Not applicable Refer to Additional explanation of fees and costs for information about other fees and costs such as advice fees for personal advice Ranges between 0% pa and 0.77% pa (estimated) 0.00% pa from 1 July 2016 Included in the calculation of unit prices which determine your investment return (not deducted directly from your account) For Term Deposit investments that commenced before 1 July 2016, the Operational risk reserve cost (0.05% before 30 June 2016) applies for the whole term of the investment, even if the investment matures after 30 June The investment management cost is an estimate for the 2016/17 financial year and varies from time to time and depending on the investment option/s you choose. Please see page 5 for the investment management cost relating to each of VicSuper s investment options. 2

An administration fee is a fee that relates to the administration or operation of the superannuation entity and includes costs incurred by the trustee of the entity that: (a) relate to the administration or operation of the entity; and (b) are not otherwise charged as an investment fee, a buysell spread, a switching fee, an exit fee, an activity fee, an advice fee or an insurance fee. A fee is an advice fee if: (a) the fee relates directly to costs incurred by the trustee of the superannuation entity because of the provision of financial product advice to a member by: (i) a trustee of the entity; or (ii) another person acting as an employee of, or under an arrangement with, the trustee of the entity; and (b) those costs are not otherwise charged as an administration fee, an investment fee, a switching fee, an exit fee, an activity fee or an insurance fee. A buy-sell spread is a fee to recover transaction costs incurred by the trustee of the superannuation entity in relation to the sale and purchase of assets of the entity. An exit fee is a fee to recover the costs of disposing of all or part of members interests in the superannuation entity. The indirect cost ratio (ICR), for an investment option offered by a superannuation entity, is the ratio of the total of the indirect costs for the investment option, to the total average net assets of the superannuation entity attributed to the investment option. Note: A dollar-based fee deducted directly from a member s account is not included in the indirect cost ratio. How it applies to your VicSuper FutureSaver VicSuper does not charge activity fees. The administration fees applicable to your VicSuper FutureSaver are: The administration fee (0.28% pa) The account keeping fee ($1.50 per week) See Administration and accountkeeping fees over the page for further information. 4 Type of fee or cost Investment fees Insurance fees Switching fees Definition An investment fee is a fee that relates to the investment of the assets of a superannuation entity and includes: (a) fees in payment for the exercise of care and expertise in the investment of those assets (including performance fees); and (b) costs incurred by the trustee of the entity that: (i) relate to the investment of assets of the entity; and (ii) are not otherwise charged as an administration fee, a buy-sell spread, a switching fee, an exit fee, an activity fee, an advice fee or an insurance fee. A fee is an insurance fee if: (a) the fee relates directly to either or both of the following: (i) insurance premiums paid by the trustee, or the trustees, of a superannuation entity in relation to a member or members of the entity; (ii) costs incurred by the trustee, or the trustees, of a superannuation entity in relation to the provision of insurance for a member or members of the entity; and (b) the fee does not relate to any part of a premium paid or cost incurred in relation to a life policy or a contract of insurance that relates to a benefit to the member that is based on the performance of an investment rather than the realisation of a risk; and (c) the premiums and costs to which the fee relates are not otherwise charged as an administration fee, an investment fee, a switching fee, an exit fee, an activity fee or an advice fee. A switching fee is a fee to recover the costs of switching all or part of a member s interest in the superannuation entity from one class of beneficial interest in the entity to another. How it applies to your VicSuper FutureSaver The applicable investment management cost is included in the indirect cost ratio. See the section on investment management cost on page 5 for further information. VicSuper s costs in relation to the administration of insurance benefits and claims is covered by the administration fee structure above. VicSuper offers death, death and total and permanent disability and income protection insurance cover. For details on the premiums charged for each type of cover, please see Insurance in your super section of the Member guide on our website vicsuper.com.au/memberguide VicSuper does not charge a switching fee. Administration and accountkeeping fee The administration fee and accountkeeping fee are deducted from your account balance at the end of each month. The combined fees are capped at a maximum of $125 per month. VicSuper has the right to change fees at its discretion without the consent of members. VicSuper would notify you at least 30 days before any change is introduced. Advice fee for personal advice VicSuper provides our members with quality superannuation advice to help them plan for their future. In most instances, the superannuation advice you receive from VicSuper will be at no additional cost (as the cost is factored into administration fee). However, an advice fee of $200 including GST, is payable for certain types of personal superannuation advice. This can be deducted from your VicSuper account, paid directly via EFTPOS from a bank or credit union account, or paid by credit card. The following types of personal superannuation advice will attract a $200 fee: personal advice to join VicSuper provided to non-members personal advice on non-vicsuper products (eg ESSSuper Revised, New, SERB & Transport Schemes) personal advice regarding the consolidation of super accounts ongoing personal advice (this includes but is not limited to, periodic reviews, the provision of further advice and monitoring the implementation of recommendations). Other superannuation advice services not listed here will continue to be provided at no additional cost. Your financial planner will work with you to determine your advice needs and clearly explain any fees that may be applicable before proceeding with the advice. From August 2016 we are planning to expand our personal advice service to include a broader range of financial products and strategies. This optional service will be available to members for a separate fee. More information will be available on our website at: vicsuper. com.au/advice The fee will vary depending on the scope and nature of the advice. Your financial planner will work with you to determine your advice needs and clearly explain and agree upon the fees with you before proceeding with the advice. This fee cannot be deducted from your account. 4
5 No commissions VicSuper financial planners are paid salaries by VicSuper. They are not offered commissions to provide advice or recommendations about VicSuper. Investment management cost The investment management cost represents the costs associated with investing your superannuation. It includes fees paid to external investment managers, investment consulting fees, custodian costs and internal costs relating to investment management (excluding transaction costs). The investment management cost is factored into the calculation of unit prices for each investment option. The following table shows estimates of the fund s investment management costs per investment option for 2016/2017. The actual cost will vary from year to year. Investment option Investment management cost (estimated) pa Cash 0.03% Term Deposit Capital Secure 0.26% Capital Stable 0.38% Balanced 0.44% Growth (MySuper) 0.52% Equity Growth 0.48% Equity Growth Sustainability 0.77% Australian Shares 0.20% Performance fees Some of the external managers of the unlisted trusts that VicSuper invests in may charge a performance fee that is payable when the manager s investment performance exceeds a specified benchmark. The amount of performance fees payable is dependent on the individual arrangement VicSuper has with the relevant managers. Estimated performance fees of $10,775,383 have been included as a reasonable estimate in calculating the investment management cost for 2016/17. Operational risk reserve cost All super funds are required to hold a reserve to cover optional risks. To meet this requirement VicSuper has an Operational risk reserve (ORR) which aims to hold an amount of approximately 0.25% of net assets. The ORR has been built up by transfers from VicSuper s General Reserve and also by charging members a fee (called the Operational risk reserve cost) of 0.05% per year from 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2016*. This fee was included in the calculation of unit prices and the maturity proceeds of term deposits. From 1 July 2016 the fee for the Operational risk reserve cost is 0% pa, however VicSuper reviews the level of the ORR each year to ensure it continues to meet the requirement of 0.25% of net assets. Therefore, if required, VicSuper may reinstate the Operational risk reserve cost again in the future. * For Term Deposit investments that commenced up to 30 June 2016 the Operational risk reserve cost applies for the whole term of the investment, even if the investment matures after 30 June Transaction costs Certain costs in acquiring and disposing assets such as brokerage, buy-sell spreads of some investments held by VicSuper and government duties are incurred by managing VicSuper Fund s investments. These represent an additional cost and VicSuper estimates the transaction cost in acquiring and disposing of investment assets to be between 0% to 0.25%. The actual transaction cost is taken into account when calculating the unit price of each investment option (where applicable). Taxes Certain taxes apply to your superannuation benefit and contributions made to your VicSuper Fund account. The tax rate on each investment option is incorporated into the calculation of the unit price for each investment option, except for term deposits where the tax is incorporated into the maturity proceeds of the term deposit. See the section on unit prices for information about VicSuper s unit prices. At 30 June, 31 December and the date of exit, your account is increased for the benefit of a tax deduction on insurance premiums (where applicable) for the benefit statement period or period to date of exit, to the extent of contributions tax charged during the period. 5
