2 English Language Program Admission Requirements for 6-year medical program in English Candidates who graduated from high school can apply for admission to the 6-year program. They are expected to hand in the following documents: 1. original or notarized copy of high school diploma 2. original copy of high school transcript 3. application form 4. xerox copy of an identification document certified for compliance with the original document 5. 3 photos 6. xerox copy of birth certificate 7. heath certificate confirming no objections to take up medical studies 8. certificate documenting English language fluency level as specified at c (applies only to candidates from countries with a native language other than English who at the same time did not complete education at previous school in English language) 9. receipt of registration fee payment in the amount of 70 PLN (Polish citizens) Requirements for advanced 6-year medical program in English (transfer applicants) Candidates who graduated from or attended pre-medical or paramedical college can apply for transfer to third year of the 6-year program (4-year medical program in English). 6 COURSE OBJECTIVES PREMEDICAL PROGRAM Medicine is a science and profession that is based on a broad range of mathematical, chemical, biological and other natural sciences combined with deep understanding of human being, i.e. behavioral sciences, sociology as well as understanding cultural, ethnic or religious background of the individuals that suffer from the disorders. Education at the premedical level is considered as the creation in the student ability to understand true values of medicine and to absorb medical knowledge successfully as well as to build a proper attitude to suffering patient. Presented course gives an integrated account of the structure and function of genes in both: prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. 8 Introductory biochemistry Department of Virusology Tomasz Wąsik, MD, PhD Course description: The course provides pre-med students the most up-to-date coverage of the principles governing structure, function, and interactions of biological molecules and metabolic pathways most relevant to human metabolism and medicine. Topics covered are the structure of biological molecules, colligative properties of solutions, ph and buffering, principles of thermodynamics, transport of molecules across membranes, reaction kinetics, Michaelis-Menten enzyme kinetics, allosteric enzymes, feedback inhibition and covalent and other modifications of enzymes, reactions of the functional groups found in biological molecules, basic chemistry of biological molecules such as amino acids, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. Other topics dealt with include fundamental pathways of metabolism, with emphasis on the mechanisms of metabolic regulation, mechanisms of signal transduction and the control of metabolism by hormones, growth factors, and other extracellular regulators. Outpatient care practice Department of Family Practice Witold Lukas, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine Course description: Outpatient family practice is intended to provide answers to everyday clinical questions presented from family physician perspective. It is important to emphasize ambulatory care, home-based health problems, new clinical methods and information about office management. The role of preventive medicine for children and adults is discussed. 9 Introduction to Medical Analyses Department of General and Analytical Chemistry Alina Pyka, DSc, PhD Course description: The course is designed to meet the needs of the students majoring in pre-medicine. The aim of the course is to teach basic and modern methods for the detection and separation of the medically and pharmaceutically important substances, as well as to introduce the students to work in the analytical laboratory and to carry out simple medical analysis. Lectures include theory and criteria for choosing different methods of analyses: titrimetic, spectrophotometric, electroanalytical, chromatographic, electrophoretic, radiochemical, immunochemical. Topics include application of the analytical procedures in the body fluids examination and in the drug monitoring therapy. The organization of a quality and safety assurance system is also discussed. Special training is given also on data evaluation with error analysis. The laboratory course is designed to complement the lecture material. Acquisition of data by accurate and precise manipulative techniques is emphasized. Data evaluation is accomplished by computer analysis. Parasitology Department of General and Molecular Biology and Genetics Professor Aleksander Sieroń, PhD Course description: This course is to provide students with the knowledge of human parasites and related diseases, with an emphasis on infestations brought from tropical and subtropical areas of the world. The students should understand the biology and morphology of medically important parasites, and they should know the pathogenesis and symptomatology of diseases caused by these parasites. The history of public health care, hygiene and epidemiology. Prevention of diseases and promotion of health. The definition of health. Evaluation of health. Public health care. The influence of environmental factors (indoor and outdoor) and lifestyle (stress, addiction, sleep, exercise, occupation) on human health. Methodology of epidemiological study. Biochemistry Department of Biochemistry Jan Gmiński MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine Course description: The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of (1) basic biochemical pathways and their regulation by both intracellular and hormonal mechanisms, (2) the role of biochemical mechanisms in the development of pathological conditions, and (3) principles of molecular techniques used in diagnosing inherited diseases encountered in medical practice. Histology Department of Histology Professor Ryszard Wiaderkiewicz, PhD Course description: The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge of histology with a special emphasis on structural and functional relationships between tissues and organs. The course also equips students with basic skills needed to recognize and describe the main features of human tissue specimens, which is essential in examining pathological changes in different diseases. The course introduces students to clinical physiology and diagnostic methods used in clinical practice.

Biophysics Department of Medical Biophysics Andrzej Franek MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine Course description: This course purpose is to provide students with the knowledge of electrical processes taking place in muscle cells, theoretical and practical aspects of electrocardiography (ECG). This course also describes theoretical and practical aspects of modern diagnostic methods used to visualize human organs. Microbiology and virusology Department of Microbiology Gayane Martirosian, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine Course description: This course provides students with the knowledge of morphology, physiology and genetics of bacteria, viruses and fungi, host-parasite relationships, mechanisms underlying virulence and the pathogenesis of infections. The beneficial effect of the normal flora and dysbacteriosis is also discussed. The course acquaints students with the principles of diagnostic procedures, principles of chemotherapy, the issue of resistance to antibiotics and the basic aspects of specific and nonspecific prevention of infectious diseases. After having completed the course, the students should understand the mechanisms of spread of infectious agents, their interactions with the host and should correlate specific properties of microbes with the corresponding diseases. 13 Environmental Health Course description: Department Epidemiology Jan Zejda, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine Lectures and seminars addressing the principal issues and methods in environmental health and human nutrition. In particular, the topics in environmental health include the concept of environmental exposures (various media and agents, methods of assessment, biological monitoring), specific health disorders (symptoms, syndromes and diseases, methods of measurement of environmental health disorders), basic designs of environmental epidemiology studies, review of gene-environment interactions, the concept of health risk, preventive measures in environmental health. Human nutrition component focuses on the role of diet in promoting health as well as on diet/nutrition related health disorders. The course curriculum provides also an introduction to the field and functions of environmental and occupational medicine. Pharmacology Department of Pharmacology Bogusław Okopień, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine Course description: The main aim of this course is to make students understand the principles of drug action, to recognize therapeutic indications and adverse effects, and due to this, make pharmacotherapy most favorable for patients. For each drug category, the course emphasizes: selected prototype drugs, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, therapeutics, adverse effects, contra-indications and drug-drug interactions. At the end of the course, students should be able to identify the particular drug with the proper therapeutic group and correlate the mechanism of action with the various therapeutic uses of each drug.
