7 th December, Fire Safety Lessons for the family. Press release # 1- Tuesday 7 December, THE ROTARY CLUB SUNRISE of Road Town NEWS RELEASE CONTACT: Ken Guiste President ken.guiste@time4lime.com, FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday December 7, 2010 ROTARY SUNRISE CLUB LEARNS ABOUT FIRE EXTINGUISHERS Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town held their weekly meeting this morning at Maria s By The Sea. The guest speakers were Fire Officers Geraldo Barry and Tyronne Caddle. Fire Officer Geraldo Barry told the Club that in order to understand how the fire extinguisher works, you need to know a little about the fire. He said that Four things are necessary at the same time in order to produce a fire. Enough energy to sustain combustion. Enough heat to raise the material to it s ignition temperature. Some sort of fuel or combustible material. The chemical exothermic reaction that is fire. He also spoke about the Fire Triangle which consists of Oxygen, Heat and Fuel, which when combined sets off a chemical reaction known as Fire. Remove any one of these and the fire will be extinguished. Fire Extinguishers put out fire by taking away one or more elements of the fire triangle. Fire is classified into 4 classes. Class A - Wood, paper, cloth, trash and plastics. Class B Flammable Liquids: Gasoline, oil, grease and acetone. Class C Electrical: Energized electrical equipment. Class D Metals: Potassium, sodium, aluminum and magnesium. Most fire extinguishers will have a pictorial label telling you which classification of fire the extinguisher is designed to fight. The different types of extinguishers are: Water Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Dry Chemical (ABC, BC,DC) The rules for fighting fire are: Assist persons in danger. Activate the building s fire alarm system or call 911.

Try using fire extinguisher, providing that the fire is small. Always position yourself with an exit or means of egress at your back. Before attempting to put out a fire, you need to know what is burning, so that the proper type of extinguisher can be used. Fire Officer Barry told the Club in order to remember how to use the fire extinguisher properly, they should remember the following acronym. Pull :- Stand back and pull the pin. Aim :- Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Squeeze:- Squeeze the handle. Sweep :- Sweep from side to side. He finally told the Club that the fire extinguisher has a range of about 6 to 8 feet, and that when the gauge is green it is fully charged. This was followed by a brief question and answer period. The Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town was chartered on 31 March, 2009 with 23 members and has grown to 34 members. The Club meets Tuesdays at 7am at Maria s By the Sea Hotel. Guest Speakers Fire Officer Geraldo Barry and Supervisor receiving Guest Speaker Gifts and Certificates from Rotary Club Sunrise s Treasurer Rtn Corleen and President Ken.

10 th December, Visit to Rainbow Children s Home- Donation of gifts and Christmas Caroling Rotary Sunrise s involvement with the Rainbow Children s Home commenced last year our reading and literacy program. This year, in addition to the established reading and literacy program, Rotary Club Sunrise has extended their Christmas celebration to include the Rainbow Children s Home. On the evening of 10 th December, 2010, several Rotary Club Sunrise Rotarians visited the Rainbow Children s home to deliver gifts and spread Christmas cheer through the singing of numerous Christmas carols. The gifts that were presented consisted of educational and inspirational books and the five kids who were present were delighted to receive these items and readily participated in the singing of Christmas Carols. 5 12 December, Visit to Home for the Elderly in Virgin Gorda- Donation of Gifts and Christmas Caroling One of Rotary Club Sunrise s goals is the incorporate islands other than Tortola into our activities. It is with this objective in mind that on 12 December, 2010 a conservative representation of the club visited the Home for the Elderly in Virgin Gorda. On this visit, Rotary Sunrise members delivered fruit baskets, much needed clothing for guest of the Home and a decorated Christmas tree. It was also a pleasure to sing Christmas carols to the guest and listen to stories of Virgin Gorda and Christmas from the 1930s and 1940s. The guest were repeatedly expressed their thanks and appreciation for our visit as many of their family members were either deceased or unable to visit them during this period to spread the Christmas cheer and love. We at Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town are proud to fill this void especially during Family month. Rotarians at the Home for the Elderly with the donated Christmas Tree

14 December, Visit to the Peebles Hospital- Donation of Gifts and Christmas Caroling The club s visit to Peebles Hospital in Road Town has evolved into an annual event with the staff of the hospital and Sunrise Rotarians energized and committed to making it a success. This year s visit was no exception. On the afternoon of the 14 of December, 2010, over ten Sunrise members assembled in the lounge of the Peebles hospital to sing Christmas carols. Several patients, staff and visitors alike surrounded or gathering and participated in the festive activity of Christmas caroling and general Christmas cheer. At the end of the caroling session, a select Sunrise group was chosen to visit different patient wards to deliver gifts and to converse with over 75 patients. 9 15 December, Refurbishment of private residence that was severely damaged by recent inclement weather On Wednesday, 15 December 2010 Sunrise Rotarians Colin and Director Vincent visited the home of Idalia Hodge-Wharton. The Hodge- Wharton home which consisted of 5 family members, was severely damaged by hurricane Earl and it was Rotary Sunrise s vision to render assistance to a family in dire need of help. Rotary Club Sunrise therefore solicited the help of The Ministry of Health and Social Development along with members of the club to refurbish the home of Idalia Hodge-Wharton. In this connection, the structural work was undertaken by the Ministry of Health and Social Development while members of Rotary Club Sunrise conducted the painting of the home and also provided clothes, beds, a Christmas tree and Christmas gifts for the entire family. The gifts and Christmas Tree which were delivered on Friday 17 December 2010 was readily appreciated by the Hodge-Wharton family. The family was very grateful and thankful to Rotary Club Sunrise for all the assistance rendered. Sunrise Rotarian applying paint to the house

19 December, Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town s Annual Christmas Party. The annual Christmas party was dubbed a Family affair as not only Cub Rotarians were invited to attend but also family members and friends. The event was attended by more than thirty persons inclusive of Sunrise Rotarians, their family and friends. The highlights of the evening activities were; Christmas caroling and raffle prizes. 12 Summary 2010/2011 BOARD Officers President Ken Guiste Immediate Past President Monica Ramgeet President Elect Donna Farmer-Arter Vice President Richard Arthur Secretary Norman Allen Treasurer Corleen Goodman Sergeant at Arms Heskith Vanterpool Directors In summary, Rotary Club Sunrise enjoyed participating in several activities directed at involving the family of Rotary or improving the lives of families in our Rotary community such as: Christmas Caroling and gift donation to the kids at the Rainbow Children s Home, Presentation of Fire Safety Prevention to our members at our weekly meeting and the subsequent press release, Christmas Caroling and donation of gifts at the Home for the Elderly on one of our sister islands, Virgin Gorda; Home improvement project within the community; Christmas Caroling and donation of gifts to patients and staff at Peebles Hospital; and The hosting of the annual Rotary Club Sunrise Christmas Party with family and friends. FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING

FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING Fire safety, at its most basic, is based upon the principle of keeping fuel sources and ignition sources separate. Three things must be present at the same time to produce fire:
