Creeds from Scripture It is permissible to read any passages from Scripture (using Holman translation). Please let the person creating the PowerPoint slides know the passage, so they have time to create the slide. The Psalms are particularly useful to include during our services and they allow a very broad way for the congregation to read them as a creedal or thematic statement. The following passages particularly highlight what we believe about Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:1-9 I want to clarify for you the gospel I proclaimed to you; you received it and have taken your stand on it. You are also saved by it, if you hold to the message I proclaimed to you, unless you believed for no purpose. For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Peter, then to the Twelve. Then He appeared to over 500 brothers at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one abnormally born, He also appeared to me. Amen. Philippians 5:6-11 Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage. Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave Taking on the likeness of men. And when he had come as a man in His external form. He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death even to death on a cross. For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, So that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Colossians 1:15-20 Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or rulers or authorities All things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together. He is also the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to have first place in everything. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile everything to Himself by making peace through the blood of His cross whether things on earth or things in heaven. 1 Timothy 3:16 Jesus was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. Hebrews 1:1-2 Long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways. In these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. God has appointed Him heir of all things and made the universe through Him. Historic Creeds Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of Sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Creed of Athanasius Whosoever will be saved: before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholick Faith. Which Faith except everyone do keep whole and undefiled: without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. and the Catholick Faith is this: that we worship one God in trinity, and trinity in unity; neither confounding the persons: nor dividing the substance. For there is one person of the Father, another of the son: and another of the Holy Ghost. but the Godhead of the Father, of the son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one: the Glory equal, the Majesty co-eternal. such as the Father is, such is the son: and such is the Holy Ghost. the Father uncreate, the son uncreate: and the Holy Ghost uncreate. the Father incomprehensible, the son incomprehensible: and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible. the Father eternal, the son eternal: and the Holy Ghost eternal. and yet they are not three eternals: but one eternal. as also there are not three incomprehensibles, nor three uncreated: but one uncreated, and one incomprehensible. so likewise the Father is almighty, the son almighty: and the Holy Ghost almighty. and yet they are not three almighties: but one almighty. so the Father is God, the son is God: and the Holy Ghost is God. and yet they are not three Gods: but one God. so likewise the Father is lord, the son lord: and the Holy Ghost lord. and yet not three lords: but one lord. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity: to acknowledge every person by himself to be God and lord; so are we forbidden by the Catholick religion: to say, there be three Gods, or three lords. the Father is made of none: neither created, nor begotten.
the son is of the Father alone: not made, nor created, but begotten. the Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the son: neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. so there is one Father, not three Fathers; one son, not three sons: one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts. and in this trinity none is afore, or after other: none is greater, or less than another; but the whole three persons are co-eternal together: and co-equal. so that in all things, as is aforesaid: the unity in trinity, and the trinity in unity is to be worshipped. He therefore that will be saved: must thus think of the trinity. Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation: that he also believe rightly the incarnation of our lord Jesus Christ. For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess: that our lord Jesus Christ, the son of God, is God and Man; God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds: and Man, of the substance of his Mother, born in the world; Perfect God, and perfect Man: of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting; equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead: and inferior to the Father, as touching his Manhood. Who although he be God and Man: yet he is not two, but one Christ; One; not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh: but by taking of the Manhood into God; one altogether; not by confusion of substance: but by unity of person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man: so God and Man is one Christ; Who suffered for our salvation: descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, he sitteth on the right hand of the Father, God almighty: from whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. at whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies: and shall give account for their own works. and they that have done good shall go into life everlasting: and they that have done evil into everlasting fire. this is the Catholick Faith: which except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved. Historic Prayers Lord s Prayer (AAPB) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Lord s Prayer (LP1) Our Father in heaven, Your name be honoured as holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven... Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors... And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen Collects (Book of Common Prayer and An Australian Prayer Book) The Collects were prayers which collect together the theme of the readings and the theme of a particular church calendar day. They are good examples of biblical prayers which we use to pray during our gatherings. See AAPB, pg Prayers of Confession Prayer of Confession (PPP1) Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have gone our own way, not loving you as we ought, nor loving our neighbour as ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed and in what we have failed to do. We deserve your condemnation. Father, forgive us. Help us to love you and our neighbour, and to live for your honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Prayer of Confession (PPP2) Heavenly Father, we praise you for adopting us as your children and making us heirs of eternal life. In your mercy you have washed us from our sins and made us clean in your sight. Yet we still fail to love you as we should and serve you as we ought. Forgive us our sins and cleanse us by your grace, that we may continue as members of Christ, in whom alone is our salvation. Amen.
Prayer of Confession (PPP3) Heavenly Father, you have loved us with an everlasting love, but we have gone our own way and broken your laws. We are sorry for our sins and turn away from them. For the sake of your Son who died for us, forgive us, cleanse us and change us. By your Holy Spirit, enable us to live for you, and to please you more and more; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Prayer of Confession (C1) Heavenly Father, Thank you for your great love, Your salvation and your right judgement. Forgive us for turning away from you and Help us to turn towards you, Living the kind of life you want us to live, Serving you and other people. Amen. Prayer of Confession (C2) Heavenly Father, Forgive us for ignoring you and rebelling against you. We are sorry that we sometimes put other things in first place in our lives. Please forgive us and change us, Help us to live in ways that please you. Amen. Prayer of Confession (C3) We thank you Father for your everlasting love and that you have adopted us as your children. We thank you that you enable us o do all the good works you prepared for us to do. Yet we know that we still ignore you and reject your will for our lives. We are sometimes stubborn and rebellious, while you remain merciful and kind. Please forgive us, cleanse us and change us, for the sake of your son who died for us. By your Spirit, help us to live for you and to please you in everyway. Amen. Prayer of Confession (C4) Heavenly Father, you have loved us with an everlasting love. But we have turned against you, ignoring you and rejecting your will for our lives. We have been stubborn and rebellious, but you are merciful and kind.
For the sake of your Son who died for us, forgive us, cleanse us and change us. By your Holy Spirit, enable us to live for you and to please you in every way; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Prayer of Confession (C5) Father forgive us for failing to see you as you really are, the great God and sovereign of this universe. Forgive us for wanting to live life our way rather than yours. Thank you for rescuing us from your anger by sending Jesus. Help us to please you and live for you in all we do. Amen. Prayer of Confession (AAPB 1 st Form) Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have left undone what we ought to have done, and we have done what we ought not to have done. We have followed our own ways and the desires of our own hearts. We have broken your holy laws. Yet, good Lord, have mercy on us; restore those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to mankind in Jesus Christ our Lord. And grant, merciful Father, for his sake, that we may live a godly and obedient life, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. Prayer of Confession (AAPB 2 nd Form) Most merciful God, we humbly admit that we need your help. We confess that we have wandered from your way: we have done wrong, and we have failed to do what is right. You alone can save us. Have mercy on us: wipe out our sins and teach us to forgive others.
