5 EXTERIOR DESIGN Civic 5 door WHO SAYS YOU CAN T HAVE IT ALL? The Civic s unique styling philosophy gives it the appearance of a sleek 3 door, but underneath it is every bit a highly functional 5 door car. It s also extremely versatile with clever uses of space that never compromise on comfort or quality. The all-round design is created to maximise individual tastes in driving as well as usability. Whether sitting behind the wheel, sitting in the back seat or needing to carry a heavier load, the Civic is designed to maximise the joy of driving.

6 REFINEMENT, REFINED The first thing you ll notice about the Civic is its unique wedge shaped design. This not only echoes Honda s sporting heritage, it also improves aerodynamics and as a result reduces cabin noise. The front is short and low with a newly designed front grille. This begins a flowing line from the wrap-around headlights right through to the tapered spoiler. This shape is also echoed in triangular design details like the fog lights, door handles and twin exhausts. Refinements to the side protector body trim and wheel arches complete the new look. Lots of small details, but always lots of big thinking.

8 FEEL CONNECTED At Honda we have always believed that the most important part of the car is the driver. That s why the Civic is designed to make you feel at the heart of the driving experience. The Dual Zone driver environment enables you to feel not only comfortable and relaxed, but also exhilarated. This is achieved by designing a dashboard that allows you to instinctively know everything you need. The Multi-Information Display puts all the most important information into your line of sight, so you don t need to take your eyes off the road. The upper area displays information on speed, rev counter and fuel, whilst the lower area has specific controls, heating and hazard lights all close by. Doesn t it feel good to have so much excitement at your fingertips?

13 INTERIOR DESIGN HOW DO YOU CREATE MORE ROOM WHEN THERE ISN T ANY MORE SPACE? At Honda we love challenges. It forces us to think differently. It produces innovative solutions like Magic Seats, which can be folded flat or have their bases folded up to reveal extra space. So even awkward objects, like a bicycle, can be loaded. But rear seating space hasn t been at the expense of boot space, with a huge 415 litres available. Within the boot area, there s also a split level collapsible floor to give you a further 70 litres. Perfect for those taller objects and valuable items you want to hide. Even if the front seat is pushed back as far as it will go, the rear seat can still fold flat with the headrest still attached. So having all this space is great, but how are you going to load it all in? How about doors that open almost 90 degrees for easy access? At Honda we understand that answers sometimes come from asking the right questions.

15 PERFORMANCE AN EXTRAORDINARY CAR NEEDS AN EXTRAORDINARY ENGINE The Civic s new 1.4 litre i-vtec is a replacement for the previous 1.4 i-dsi. This has been designed to give great fuel economy without compromising driver pleasure. The Civic is also available with two other engines. The 1.8 litre i-vtec is similar to having two engines in one, with the performance equivalent of a powerful 2.0 and the better fuel efficiency of a 1.6. The 2.2 i-ctdi is a lightweight turbo diesel engine. Its acceleration is powerful, but when it comes to noise it s one of the quietest and refined of its type. Both the petrol and diesel engines offer a transmission best suited for optimum performance. The 1.4 litre i-vtec operates as a 6-speed manual, as well as an optional i-shift Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). With i-shift in manual mode, you can use the steering wheel mounted shift paddles to flick easily through the gears. In automatic mode, the optimum gear is selected automatically, providing you with greater fuel efficiency and hassle-free driving. Choose a 1.8 litre i-vtec and you get a 6-speed manual transmission. Finally, the 2.2 litre i-ctdi is available with a 6-speed manual transmission only.

16 BEFORE WE MAKE THE CAR, WE BUILD SAFETY IN How do you design a car that crumples in one place and bends in another? You make an innovative Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure which disperses energy across the body frame. This helps protect occupants from frontal impacts, absorbing the energy and keeping you safe. Bluetooth Compatibility Centre CD audio console operates CDs, MP3 or digital radio, with Bluetooth compatibility for hands free devices. Multiple airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) all come as standard. New Deflation Warning System (DWS) New Deflation Warning System monitors tyre pressure and lets you know if you might have a puncture. Airbags Collisions can come from any angle; that s why the Civic has been fitted with airbags all around. The Dual Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) gives complete protection.

17 SAFETY Head Restraints Active headrests respond to impact from behind, moving forward with the seat to cushion the head and prevent whiplash. ISOFix Rear outer seats feature ISOFix mounting and tether points. This allows you to fix an ISOFix child car seat securely.

At a quick glance the Type S may look the same as any other Civic, but a closer look reveals a car with its own distinct personality and sportier feel. We ve taken the design of the new Civic and created a refined version with optimum levels of performance and handling.

35 EXTERIOR DESIGN DESIGNED FOR A PURPOSE Our engineers created the Type S not just for looks, but for a very specific purpose. The overall body has been modified to support the low centre of gravity and there s increased rigidity in the steering column. These modifications work together to produce a dynamic sportier ride you can really feel. The sports suspension has been upgraded to give you increased performance, with body roll kept to a minimum due to thicker anti-roll bars at the front and rear. Balanced weight distribution gives an assured calm drive for a car that doesn t just look good, but feels good to drive.

36 KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD Our racing heritage has allowed us to draw on world class knowledge on how drivers absorb information. The result is the dual zone dash and curved driver zone that echo the functionality of a racing cockpit. Everything is at hand, your seating position is perfect and you re able to concentrate safely on the road ahead. The secret is the Multi-Information Display. It puts all the most important information into the driver s peripheral vision, so you don t need to take your eyes off the road. The upper area displays information on speed, time and the radio channel. The lower area shows average speed, fuel consumption, outside temperature, has specific controls like, heating controls and the distance before needing to refuel. The outcome is that you feel more engaged with the car and feel a real connection to the road and driving. At Honda, it s a bond we never want to break.

The sporty moulded seats feature Alcantara fabric which comfortably moulds to the shape of your body. This holds you in the perfect position for driving, so you feel totally at one with the car.

40 Two ENGINES. ONE BELIEF At Honda we ve always believed engines can be lighter, quieter, more powerful and offer lower emissions. It s this driving force that made us go back to the drawing board and produce two engines that power the Type S. The 1.4 and 1.8 i-vtec engines have superior performance, whilst having the fuel economy of something smaller.

42 DANGEROUSLY ADDICTIVE, REASSURINGLY SAFE The Type S is proof that safe can still be exciting. Honda s innovative Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure helps protect occupants from frontal crashes, through highly efficient energy absorption. Multiple airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) all come as standard. But before we tested the cars for safety, we tested the crash safety centres themselves. We couldn t find a crash test centre that met our standards, so we built our own. Tochigi is the largest of its type in the world. It even has the world s most advanced crash test dummy, Polar II, so we know the best way to protect both passengers and pedestrians. You may not be able to see the safety features, but doesn t it feel good to know they re there?

58 ABS The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) prevents the wheels from locking and helps to ensure that no matter how hard you brake, you will retain steering control of the vehicle in the event of an emergency stop. Active Headrests The Civic's front seats incorporate innovative active head restraints that help minimise the potential for neck injury from rear-end collisions. In this type of collision, the occupant s body will be pushed against the seatback. The pressure to the seatback is then transmitted mechanically from the lumbar plate via links that push the head restraint upward and forward to reduce the gap between the occupant s head and seat head restraint. This lessens impact forces on the head, neck and spine, helping reduce whiplash injuries. Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Civic has been designed with an innovative frame structure engineered to reduce the concentrated frontal force on occupants in front end impacts. The Civic has Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) design which disperses and absorbs crash energy over a larger area enhancing the preservation of the cabin space, improving safety for all occupants. Aerodynamics Aerodynamics refers to the ability of a car to overcome the resistance or 'drag' generated by its body as it moves through the atmosphere. The lower the Coefficient of Drag (Cd) the more aerodynamic the shape. An aerodynamic shape is more fuel efficient, quieter and keeps the car firmly on the road. The Cd value multiplied by the cross section area of the car is the wind drag of the car. Brake Assist Brake Assist uses sensors to monitor the speed at which the brake pedal is pressed. When emergency braking is detected, Brake Assist applies maximum braking pressure, activating the ABS system. Brake Assist only engages when required, terminating immediately upon release of the brake pedal. CO 2 Carbon dioxide is an exhaust gas believed to be one of the causes of the green house effect. The lower the CO 2 emissions, the better for the environment. Common rail Common rail diesel engines have a reservoir of highly pressurised fuel close to the cylinder heads. As well as allowing extremely precise amounts of fuel to be injected into the combustion chamber very quickly, the pressure means the fuel forms a finer mist, so burns more efficiently. This makes the engine more economical and reduces noise, smoke and emission levels. DBW (Drive-By Wire or Electronic Throttle Control System) The mechanical link from the accelerator pedal to the engine is replaced with sensors that detect the throttle position and feed instructions directly to the engine management system. This provides instant, directly proportional yet smooth responses to throttle inputs. EBD Electronic Brake-force Distribution works in tandem with ABS analysing weight distribution around the car and automatically adjusting the braking force applied to front and rear wheels to help maintain directional stability. Ergonomics Ergonomics is the applied science of designing a working environment, in this case the car s cabin, in order to maximise the occupants comfort and safety. In simple terms, that means locating major controls and instruments in a way that makes them easy and comfortable to use and to see. This is extended to seating which minimises driver fatigue and discomfort. Fuel consumption The figures for the fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions are to give you an indication of the car's performance. Following legislation by the VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency), all car manufacturers generate these statistics through the same industry standard test. This allows accurate comparison across all manufacturers and models. The tests use a base grade version of the model and do not take into account optional levels of equipment, such as different sized wheels, tyres and other factors that can affect the economy of the model. The test is on a rolling road and there is no additional weight in the car other than the driver (no passengers or cargo) and it does not account for individual driving style, which can mean a difference to the figures achievable in the real world.

59 GLOSSARY i-ctdi The Honda i-ctdi engine - the 'i' stands for 'intelligent' - is a new generation direct injection engine that uses both the latest common rail and variable turbocharger technology. As a result, it's significantly quieter, smoother, more powerful and returns greater fuel economy than conventional diesels. i-vtec Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control varies the amount of valve lift and the duration of valve opening during the intake stroke of each engine cylinder. The effect is optimised combustion over changing engine speeds with the result of reduced fuel consumption and emissions as well as increased engine performance. Restraint System Several sophisticated restraint systems are included in the Civic to help protect the heads and bodies of its occupants in a variety of impact scenarios. Six airbags, including dual front airbags, as well as front side airbags and side curtain airbags are backed by advanced sensor systems that monitor everything from impact angle and severity, to the size of the front passenger. All seats have threepoint belts, and the front seat belts are equipped with active systems to help correct the occupant seating positions at the moment of impact, as well as front seat active head restraints to reduce the chance of whiplash injuries. Traction Control Traction Control is integrated into the VSA and helps your car to accelerate smoothly on slippery surfaces. Any wheel about to break traction upon acceleration will have its brake applied and/or power diverted from it until secure traction is regained. Variable turbocharger Turbochargers use rotors to pressurise the air going into the cylinders. This increases the air's oxygen density, improving combustion and producing more power. The turbocharger fitted to the i-ctdi engine has variable nozzles, which boost the airflow according to how hard you press the accelerator - the more you put your foot down, the more the airflow is increased. This produces instant, smooth acceleration, virtually eliminating the problem of 'turbo lag'. VSA VSA helps keep the Type S on course during fast or tight turns by detecting and correcting potential understeer or oversteer. The system continually monitors vehicle speed, throttle position, individual wheel speeds, steering angle, lateral g-force, and yaw rate to detect when oversteer or understeer is imminent. When necessary, VSA automatically reduces the engine's torque and uses the ABS system to apply brakes to each wheel, as needed, to help stabilise the vehicle. The response is so quick that the instability may be corrected before the driver even knows it's occurring.
