Machine Operation
Machine Operation Safety Concerns Most Important Safety Concerns (major scrap company fleet manager) 1. Fully understands machine operations (Operators Manual). 2. Use the right machine for the job (application). 3. Daily Inspection routine 4. Report machine incidents or problems to supervision and maintenance, promptly. 5. Take Ownership: treat the machine like you treat your personal vehicle
Operators Manual-Read & Review THE OPERATOR S MANUAL CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION, WHICH MUST BE READ AND UNDERSTOOD BEFORE OPERATION OF MACHINE. THIS SYMBOL APPEARS AT VARIOUS POINTS IN THE OPERATOR S MANUAL WITH WARNING TEXT. IT MEANS: WARNING, BE ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! IT IS THE OBLIGATION OF THE OPERATOR TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL WARNING DECALS ARE IN PLACE ON THE MACHINE AND THEY ARE READABLE. ACCIDENTS MAY OCCUR OTHERWISE. READ & UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATIONAL AND WARNING PLATES AND DECALS ON THE MACHINE. LEARN AND UNDERSTAND THE VARIOUS SYMBOLS AND ICONS USED TO IDENTIFY SWITCHES, CONTROLS AND INFORMATIONAL/WARNING LAMPS. BECOME THOROUGHLY FAMILIAR WITH THE POSITION AND FUNCTIONS OF VARIOUS INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS BEFORE USING THE MACHINE. READ AND UNDERSTAND THE SAFETY RULES WHEN OPERATING AND THE MEASURES BEFORE OPERATING UNDER OPERATING INFORMATION IN THE OPERATOR S MANUAL. READ AND UNDERSTAND THE SPECIFIC WARNINGS LISTED THROUGHOUT THE OPERATOR MANUAL. THE OPERATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFE OPERATION OF THE MACHINE AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS WITHIN THE WORK ZONE (WITHIN 7 METERS OR 23 FEET) OF THE MACHINE. REVIEW THE OPERATING TECHNIQUES SECTION OF THE OPERATOR S MANUAL FOR SPECIFIC INFORMATION REGARDING VARIOUS ATTACHMENTS. ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR OPERATOR S MANUAL FOR COMPLETE DETAILS
Ingress & Egress: 3 Point Contact When entering or exiting the machine, use the access ladder provided. Also, three point contact should always be followed. It is important that the access ladder and all applicable safety handrails are maintained in a serviceable condition.

Operator Training New machine delivery: provided by machine dealer. Operating characteristics Safety features Daily maintenance Ongoing: company trainer or designated individual. Operator turnover At least annual basis Safe operating practices refresher Company mandated new safety updates ISRI training programs, i.e. Material Handlers
Operator Training Manufacturer simulators Dynamic training / Evaluation Many Tech Schools now offer Available from some manufacturers
Machine Maintenance
Wheel Loader Safety Training Think Safety!!! Read and understand the applicable Operator s Manual and Safety Manual Assure that the machine is in the service position. Use the correct tools, equipment and supplies. Always wear a hard hat, safety glasses, protective shoes, gloves, and do not wear loose fitting clothes or jewelry of any kind. Maintain the working area in a clean and oil free manner. It is the obligation of the maintenance provider and the operator of the machine to make sure that all warning decals are in place on the machine and that they are readable. Warning! Be Safe!
Safety Training Lock Out Tag When the machine is being serviced a lock out tag should be installed on the steering wheel with the servicing persons name, date and time. No one is authorized to remove the tag other than the person who installed the tag. The person who installed the tag should also retain the starting key.
Safety Training Boom Stand In the event that a service is required and the lifting attachment must be in the raised position, a boom stand of sufficient capacity must be used to support the attachment. Do not walk under or work under the lifted attachment. If lifted boom is not required, always place the attachment on the ground or other flat surface.
Safety Training Steering Lock The steering safety lock (red arrow) should be in place anytime the machine is being serviced in this area. This is an articulation area. Tire tension from a turn or uneven operating areas could cause the joint area to move without warning.
Safety Training Batteries Never smoke near batteries, as these give off explosive gases. Do not connect a discharged battery in series with a fully charged battery. The current surge can cause the batteries to explode. Make sure that metal objects (such as tools, rings, watch straps, etc.) do not come into contact with the battery pole studs. Protection should be installed over the battery pole studs, as otherwise there is a risk of injuries and fire. Never connect an accessory to a single battery as the system will discharge. When servicing batteries, always disconnect and connect the ground cable first. In the event that any welding is done on the machine, disconnect the computers and battery cables to minimize damage to the electrical systems.
Safety Training Tire & Wheels Recommended air pressure should normally be followed (see OM). Special applications may require an adjustment of the air pressure. In such cases follow the instructions from the tire manufacturer and do not exceed the maximum permissible air pressures. The tire pressure may have been raised after the machine was delivered from the factory. Therefore, check and adjust the tire pressure according to recommendations in your Operator s Manual before putting the machine to work for the first time. Repair work on tires and rims must be carried out by personnel who have been specially trained for this and have the correct equipment.
Safety Training Tire & Wheels Check the tire conditions daily, look for cuts, gashes, holes, or any debris that may have damaged the tire. Tires, such as the one below, has unacceptable damage and must be replaced. Check the rim locks, if applicable, wheel rims, wheel nuts and tires visually every day for damage and check the tire pressures once a week or every 50 hours.
Solid Tires Foam-Filled Tires Some machines can t use solid or foam-filled tires. Make sure to check with equipment manufacturer.
Safety Training ROPS & FOPS In case of a roll-over, the safest place you can be is inside the cab with your safety belt fastened!! Federal Regulations strictly forbid any additions or modifications to a Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) or a Falling Object Protection System (FOPS) that may compromise the original design and tested certification of the systems. Do not weld, drill holes, mount items on the structure or make any modifications, as these actions may VOID the certification and require a cab replacement. In the event that the system is damaged from modification or an accident, it will require that a licensed engineer recertify the system or it must be replaced.
