1 DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SPEECH, AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES SCHOLARSHIPS & CRITERIA, 2016 General Information Scholarship decisions will reward primarily academic and creative achievement. Applicants must meet the minimum criteria. All instructions must be followed exactly. Please read carefully and make use of the checklist provided at the end of this document. All undergraduate of departmental scholarships must have an overall minimum grade point average of 3.0. All graduate recipients should have an overall minimum grade point average of 3.5, unless otherwise specified in the award description. All recipients, undergraduate and graduate, of departmental scholarships must be admitted to Texas Woman s University on a non- provisional basis. All recipients, undergraduate and graduate, of departmental scholarships must meet the criteria specified by the department in accordance with the wishes of scholarship donors. Late applications will not be considered. No person per academic year will receive more than one departmental scholarship that is listed in this Announcement. This restriction does not include awards given by departmental organizations, such as Omega Rho Alpha and Sigma Tau Delta. All writing submissions (essays, research papers, and creative works) must be typed, double spaced, and accompanied by an abstract (except for creative works) not to exceed 150 words, and as part of your application packet. The abstract should summarize the paper, not introduce it; do not include your name on the abstract page. Research or professional papers should follow MLA style for documentation of sources but not for placement of name or other personal identification so that the submission will be blind. The title of the submission should also appear in its normal place at the beginning of the text. All formal papers must have been written for a course or professional conference; give course number, date, and instructor s name OR conference information on the title page. The awards committee will base all scholarship and award decisions on the pool of applications received and reserves the right to withhold awards. Papers for which ESFL awards have been given in previous years may not be submitted again. Application packages must include application forms and all required materials, and must be submitted electronically via the Pioneer Scholarship System. Please name your files as follows: Lastname_writingsample.xxx. Lastname.application.xxx. If you are submitting more than one writing sample, as may be required for awards addressing certain areas of study, please add the scholarship name to the file name, as follows: Lastname_writingsample_scholarshipname.xxx. If you are not using Microsoft Word, ensure that your materials will open by saving them as pdf files. All questions and inquiries should be directed to Dr. Dundee Lackey (dlackey@twu.edu). All applications for departmental scholarships should be submitted through the Pioneer Scholarship System, which will be open until March 15 th. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please ensure that you attach all required documents to your application before the closing date. 1
