The Wedding is planned for August 25, at St. Michael s in Milroy. If you know any reason why any of these couples should not be married contact Fr. Bob. MYTH: Gay marriage is just a different expression of the same marriage institution we have always known and will easily exist in the law alongside traditional marriage. FACT: That is what gay marriage activists want people to think, but that is a fundamental misunderstanding of the legal issues involved in this debate. What is at stake are two competing definitions of marriage the union of any two people regardless of gender, versus the collective understanding of virtually every nation throughout recorded history that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Under the law, one definition of marriage would NOT exist alongside the other. As an article in the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, observed, once the judiciary or legislature adopts the union of any two persons as the legal definition of civil marriage that conception becomes the sole definitional basis for the only law-sanctioned marriage that any couple can enter, whether same-sex or man-woman. Therefore, legally sanctioned genderless marriage, rather than peacefully coexisting with the contemporary man-woman marriage institution actually displaces and replaces it. MYTH: Marriage isn t really about procreation because we allow infertile couples, senior citizens and others who cannot conceive enter into marriage. FACT: It is certainly true that marriage has as a central feature its orientation to procreation. Procreation can only occur through the complete bodily union of a man and a woman. Neither a man nor a woman is capable of procreation in her/her own right. Similarly, two men or two women are biologically incapable of forming a procreative sexual union even when their sexual organs perform perfectly. Procreation can only occur through an organic union of the man and the woman. In that sense, the two become one through the act of sexual union. The aspect of the sex relationship that makes the couple s relationship suitable to marriage is its potential for procreation. It does not matter, then, if spouses do not intend to have children or even if factors such as infertility might prevent conception from occurring. It should be noted, however, that plenty of children have been born to couples who thought they were infertile. Moreover, promoting a flourishing and vibrant marriage culture is profoundly in the common good. Marriage between men and women is a distinctive and irreplaceable way in which humanity can flourish. Hence the strength or weakness of marriage as a social institution profoundly affects the well-being of everyone in society. Whatever one thinks of same-sex unions, they are not remotely procreative in nature and calling them marriage undermines the true meaning of the marriage relationship, damaging this great social institution. Question of the Week What good news of Jesus can you share with others this week? Good People of St. Michael ~ Community of Faith For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:20). Jesus makes a promise to his disciples that comes with a challenge attached. The promise is that, in 6
7 his physical absence after the Resurrection, Jesus will be present in a new way. The challenge is where they will experience his presence. Jesus does not say that he will be found in solitude. Rather, Jesus will be found in the midst of believers who gather together in the midst of those who seek out each other to build communities of faith. Disciples must count on each other to experience the presence of the risen Jesus. How have we experienced the presence of Jesus while joining in prayer with others? Who might we ask to pray with us at a time for a special intention? Risen Jesus, thank you for inviting us into community with other believers. May your presence be what sustains us. Volunteers Needed for Area Mission Steering Committee We are hoping to have two or three members from each area parish to help with the work of planning, preparing and seeing that we do the good work needed to conduct an enriching Parish Mission on Nov It is a commitment of time and work and if you are interested in participating, please call Rich to find out if this will work for you.
