BEFORE YOUR ADMISSION: WE CAN HELP YOU TO PREPARE CALMLY SIGNIFICANTLY EASIER WITH ACUPUNCTURE AND AYURVEDA The time before your admission to the clinic is a time for preparation. Whether you re looking for informative classes, an advance visit or firsthand tips, we will do everything to help you to face the happy event in a relaxed and carefree frame of mind. Maternity Unit visits Get to know the layout of our maternity unit in advance to help you to feel even more at home straight away on the day of your admission. We will be happy to show you around the delivery and postnatal units as well as our modern, comfortable rooms. You can also make your first contact with the midwives and nursing staff who will care for you and ask any questions which may be bothering you. To ensure that we can allow enough time for you, please arrange your visit di- rectly with the midwives by telephoning You are also very welcome to attend our «Birth Experience» information evening, which takes place every other month. Birth preparation classes From the 3rd trimester, we offer birth preparation classes for couples. The main aim of these popular classes is to remove any uncertainties and fears you or your partner may have regarding the birth. The classes tackle the following topics: Pregnancy and problems Onset of labour and contractions The various phases during labour and birth Positions for delivery and pelvic floor Fear and pain Delivery room tour with your partner Partners evening Breastfeeding evening Topics which will definitely be covered in the classes also include breathing and relaxation exercises, exercise in pregnancy and couples exercises. We also organise intensive birth preparation weekends, a siblings class, a caesarean class and pregnancy exercise classes. Detailed information can be found at Or simply ask our midwives. Newborn health insurance Security can never begin early enough in life. That s why we recommend that you take out health insurance for your baby before the birth. Alongside traditional Western medicine, we also offer alternative treatments. These include acupuncture, which is enjoying increasing popularity here. This method of easing the birth has long been used in China and complements traditional preparations for the birth, as proven by the results of investigations. This method can not only ease the birth, but can also relieve many other pregnancy complaints. Acupuncture can help after birth too with any breastfeeding or other problems. «WE MIDWIVES LOOK OUT FOR YOUR WELLBEING DAY AND NIGHT.» All our midwives are specially trained and experienced in the use of acupuncture. They will be happy to answer any detailed questions you may have. Ayurvedic massage for pregnant women improves general wellbeing and creates inner harmony. It supports the contact between mother and baby and promotes emotional bonding. It also has a relaxing and balancing effect, a wonderful opportunity to spoil yourself and enjoy your pregnancy. Massage helps to improve the elasticity of the skin, encou- rages good posture and supports the legs, back and pelvis. The movements are gentle, soft and slow and are performed using warm, pleasantly scented oil. Special high quality ayurvedic oils are used. 6 7

ADMISSION: WHEN THE HAPPY EVENT IS WITHIN YOUR GRASP And suddenly it s here the moment that you have played out countless times in your imagination. Your admission to our clinic shouldn t be an entry to a foreign world, but should take place in an atmosphere of security and trust. Our experienced midwives will take care of that, offering you a warm welcome, and are available to you for advice and assistance at any time. What you need to know on admission You will find information below on a number of points which will make your admission easier for you and for us. Notification As soon as you feel regular contractions, if your waters have already broken or you feel uncertain, you should call our maternity unit ( ). One of our midwives will speak to you to determine whether and when you should be admitted to the clinic and will give you valuable advice according to your situation. Pre-arranged admission If your admission date has been arranged in advance (e.g. caesarean), you will not need to wait any further, usually unnecessarily. In this case, we would ask you to please arrive promptly for your appointment. Personal effects and medical documents It is best not to bring valuables, jewellery, etc. with you to the clinic. The cupboard in your room contains a lockable compartment for your personal effects or small amounts of money. Items may be left in the safe at Reception (receipt provided). The clinic accepts no liability for items not deposited in the safe. 8 9

OUR MIDWIVES ARE HERE FOR YOU ROUND THE CLOCK Personal and individual care is at the forefront in our clinic. The same also applies for our highly motivated midwives, who are here for you round the clock to ensure that you feel safe and well with us at all times. State of the art knowledge thanks to regular training Our skilled team of midwives brings around 500 babies into the world every year. Thanks to continuous, intensive training, our midwives are always up to date with the latest developments in obstetrics and will guide you safely through this eventful time with all their experience and a great deal of sensitivity. Comprehensive personal care Whether before, during or after the birth our midwives and nursing staff are here for you round the clock and make every effort to ensure your personal wellbeing and that of your baby. Even if you are already back at home, enjoying family life after your stay with us, our midwives and nursing staff are still available to provide advice over the telephone at any time. That s how we guarantee you personal and professional care, from the first information evening to out-patient breastfeeding advice. Experience with alternative therapies Alongside traditional Western medicine, we also offer alternative treatments such as acupuncture, ayurveda or aromatherapy. Acupuncture in particular is enjoying growing popularity here. That shouldn t come as a surprise, since all our midwives are specially trained and experienced in this area. You can find out more about the advantages of ante-natal acupuncture on page 7. «INDIVIDUAL CARE IS OUR TEAM S FOCUS.» 10 11

THE BIRTH: WE LEAVE NOTHING TO CHANCE The moment of birth an event that will remain in your memory for a lifetime. Positively, of course. That s guaranteed by our experienced team of doctors and midwives, who are at your side at this momentous time and are ready to respond to your requests. The birth environment The peaceful atmosphere in our friendly and beautifully decorated delivery unit will help you to feel great. Care during the birth During the birth, you will be surrounded by people who you already know and trust. Your doctor: he is responsible for managing the birth and looking after you, together with the midwife. Your midwife: she checks on the progress of your birth and provides you with active assistance. Your partner: it goes without saying that your partner is welcome to be present for the birth, so that you can experience this unique moment together. Bonding the basis for a shared future The first few hours are very important: the newborn recognises the heart rate, smell and voice of the mother and through skin-to-skin contact, receives urgently needed warmth and security. In return, the mother is particularly open and receptive to her baby directly after the birth. This sensitive phase is when the «unique and lasting relationship between mother/parent and child» is created. Our team of midwives will support you in this vital time whether you have a natural or caesarean birth

More relaxation, less pain Whether a soothing compress, an easing massage, calming aromatherapy, a relaxing bath or targeted acupuncture we can offer a wide range of natural therapies to relieve pain and relax you during the birth. Naturally, conventional pain relief is also available if required, such as self-administered pain relief using an injection pump. Furthermore, we can also offer an epidural anaesthetic at any time, administered by our anaesthetist. The immediate post-natal period The first few hours after the birth belong to just you, your baby and your partner. You have time to recover and experience the new feeling of life as a family for the first time. Only your midwife will continue to look after you. A little later, you will be moved to your room in the post-natal unit, where a specialist nurse will take every care of you. You can continue to enjoy the company of your baby and partner here, and can receive your first visitors. The benefits of the Klinik Im Park Individual and personal care from your midwife Skilled nursing staff, together with the whole infrastructure of the Klinik Im Park Aromatherapy Acupuncture Water birth Birthing stool Delivery bed Roma birth wheel Walking epidural Self-administered pain relief «EVERY BIRTH IS A UNIQUE, STRIKING EXPERIENCE, EVEN FOR US. AND THAT S EXACTLY WHY WE LOVE OUR JOBS.» 14 15

PLANNED CAESAREAN Whenever possible, we encourage natural birth. However, a caesarean can be advantageous in certain circumstances. Specifically when your doctor identifies before the birth that a natural delivery would be risky, or is impossible for physical or personal reasons. We have summarised the most important points on the topic of caesareans below. Before your caesarean: admission to the clinic You will generally be admitted four hours before your caesarean. Please ensure that you do not eat or drink anything more before your caesarean. Doctor s visit and advance medication On the day of admission, the anaesthetist will discuss anaesthesia and the operation process with you. The anaesthetist will prescribe the medication you have to take before the caesarean. If you would like to discuss this before your admission, please make an anaesthesia appointment via patient admissions. Physical preparation To ensure that your caesarean can be performed optimally, we would ask you to make the following preparations: Remove hair from pubic bone Remove make-up from face and remove nail polish (hygiene) Remove hair clips and hairpieces (hygiene) Remove jewellery and piercings (risk of joint swelling) Remove contact lenses (risk of inflammation of the eyes) During the caesarean: anaesthesia A caesarean is usually carried out under regional anaesthesia. This means that you can be fully awake for the birth of your baby. The caesarean It s time: the midwife will take you to the operating suite, where the anaesthetic nurse will prepare you for monitoring your heart rate and circulation. Working with the anaesthetist, she will look after your personal care during the caesarean, which will be carried out by your doctor. It goes without saying that your partner can be at your side during the caesarean to experience this unforgettable moment with you. Your baby will be looked after by the paediatrician and the midwife after the caesarean. Your baby will be put to the breast immediately in the first hour after the caesarean. After your caesarean: personal care The anaesthetist and gynaecologist will check your state of health and provide any information you may require. You will be cared for and monitored by the midwives for the first few hours in the delivery suite. It is important to us that your little family can remain together in an undisturbed atmosphere

POST-NATAL CARE: A TIME FOR RECOVERY AND JOY The time you spend in the clinic after the birth is a time for recovery and finding your feet. The relationship between parents and child is created and developed by getting to know each other with expert tuition from the nursing staff and with comprehensive and loving care, so that you can enjoy your family happiness at home as soon as possible. Caring for your baby If you wish, your baby can be cared for by our nursing staff initially, so that you can recover from the birth in peace. Naturally, your baby can also be with you in your room night and day thanks to our «rooming-in» system. Caring for you You can enjoy comprehensive and personal care here, so that you can take up your usual daily routine as soon as possible and care for your baby by yourself. Doctor s visits You will receive regular visits from our specialist doctors who will look after you and your baby, as well as answering any questions you may have. Gynaecologist: Your gynaecologist will visit you daily, answering any questions and discussing your further care with the nursing staff. Paediatrician: The paediatrician will examine your baby after the birth and before you are discharged, as well as at any other time if you wish. He will be happy to answer your questions and will work with the nursing staff to decide on your baby s further care. Receiving visitors Generous visiting hours between 9 am and 9 pm allow your relatives, friends and acquaintances to share your new family happiness. There are no visiting restrictions for your partner. If you would prefer not to receive visitors at certain times, simply let our nursing staff know

Clothing To ensure that you feel at home, we recommend that you wear comfortable and loose leisure clothing or a bathrobe when you leave your room. Please remember to bring light footwear, such as slippers, because you must not walk around barefoot in the clinic. Breastfeeding The Klinik Im Park employs breastfeeding advisers who will support you, answer your questions and personally show you how to get on with breastfeeding. Even after you leave the clinic, our breastfeeding advisers are available at any time, should any uncertainties or questions arise. We hold a breastfeeding meeting once a month with our breastfeeding advisers where you can meet and chat with other mothers. Nursery/Rooming-in System To help you to get to know your baby s needs better, step by step, you can have your baby in your room with you round the clock. If you would like to spend a little time alone occasionally, your baby will be lovingly cared for by our qualified nursing staff in our nursery. You and your partner can visit your baby there at any time for nappy changes, bathing or washing. Birth menu To celebrate the happy event in a fitting manner, we would like to invite you and your partner to enjoy a celebratory «Dinner for Two» during your stay at the clinic. Dinner will be served in the evening in your choice of the restaurant or your room (single rooms only). So that we can spoil you properly, we would ask you to advise us of your menu choices at least one day in advance. Treatment and healthcare Part of your recovery after the birth includes getting your body fit for day to day family life again. Trained specialists will look after you and ensure that your body recovers quickly and you feel great all round. «YOU SHOULD WANT FOR NOTHING DURING YOUR POST-NATAL CARE. OUR SPECIALIST NURSING TEAM WILL SEE TO THAT ROUND THE CLOCK.» 22 23

Physiotherapy Our aim is to support and accelerate your recovery in any way we can. Our physiotherapist will visit you once during your post-natal stay to give you instructions on pelvic floor exercises and posture. Rehabilitation exercises, baby massage, etc. Whether you re interested in rehabilitation exercises or baby massage according to the popular Newar tradition we can offer a varied range of classes. Details can be found in the «Birth Experience Classes/Treatments» leaflet, available from us. Our midwives will also be happy to tell you more about these classes. Useful tips for mother and baby In the clinic, you will find the «Tips for Mother and Baby» folder. This covers important topics such as body care, baby care, handling your baby or breastfeeding advice and will be an important source of information once you get home

DISCHARGE: WE RE STILL HERE FOR YOU AT ANY TIME AFTER YOU GO HOME Your stay at the clinic is coming to an end and family life is waiting for you at home. Look forward to this exciting, new time with the knowledge that we are still here for you after you leave, should any questions or complications arise. You will find information below on a number of points which will make your discharge from the clinic easier for you and for us. Time of discharge Your treating doctor or our nursing staff will discuss the precise discharge date with you. On this day, please vacate your room by midday, so that we can prepare it for a new patient. Checking out at reception Please let your nurse know when you leave and check out, and please return your telephone card to Reception. Aftercare Do you have questions regarding your care at home, or hiring an independent midwife to take care of you at home? Our nursing staff or your doctor will be happy to help you. Our midwives and breastfeeding advisers are also available to help you with any questions you may have after you return home. You can hire a breast pump to take home from us. What did you think of your stay with us? Were you satisfied with your care during your stay? Where could we improve in the future? We make every effort to continually improve the quality of our clinic, and look forward to receiving any constructive criticism you may have. Please use the feedback card to let us know your wishes and suggestions. We would like to thank you for your cooperation. «WE LOOK FORWARD TO RECEIVING YOUR PRAISE OR CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM AND WISH YOU A SUCCESSFUL START TO FAMILY LIFE.» 26 27
