1 Studieplan 2015/2016 Somali Studiepoeng: 30 Studiets varighet, omfang og nivå Study length and academic level The Somali course comprises a half a year of full time study (30 ECTS credits) that is completed in the course of one academic year, and includes 4 modules of 7.5 ECTS credits. Innledning Introduction The number of immigrants in the Nordic countries from the Horn of Africa with Somali as their main language has been increasing through the latest three decades. Today, Somali speaking people are one of the largest immigrant groups in both Norway and Sweden. Due to the conflicts in their area of, a high number of them have short or no school background and a high percentage of the group are children of school age. This makes education in the Somali language at university level important. There is an emergent need for mother tongue teachers and bi-lingual subject teachers with university education in the Somali language for the education system from pre-school to upper secondary school, for interpreters and for officials at different levels. Læringsutbytte 1. Learning outcomes Skills: 1 / 11 Knowledge: The candidate is expected to exhibit advanced productive and receptive skills in oral and written Somali sound knowledge of Somali orthography, the grammatical structure of Somali, the historical development of the language and its modern variations sound knowledge of textual structure and text types The candidate has the ability to discuss topics related to Somali orthography and grammar the ability to discuss the situation for the Somali language in and outside Somalia in a historical and contemporary perspective the ability to analyse fictional and non-fictional texts using basic literary and other relevant
2 theories and models Competence: The candidate has theoretical and practical skills making them well equipped for working with Somali in different areas in society Målgruppe Target group The Somali courses are intended for mother tongue teachers and teachers providing bilingual subject teaching, in addition to people working in other areas in society where Somali competence is needed, such as the media and cultural and social institutions. Kompetanse Qualification attained The study programme prepares students for work where Somali language skills are needed, such as school (kindergarten, compulsory school and adult education), the media and cultural and social services. It may be part of Hedmark University College s study programme for bilinguals. Opptakskrav Admission requirements Students should have general entry qualifications for higher education. Students should have knowledge and skills in the Somali language necessary for an academic course partly given in Somali, based on self-assessment. Undervisnings- og læringsformer Teaching and learning methods The course is net-based, with one campus meeting in each semester. The first campus meeting will be held at Dalarna University in Falun (Sweden) and the second at Hedmark University College in Hamar (Norway). Vurderingsformer Assessment methods Each course is awarded a separate grade, which together make up the total grade. There are written exams and oral presentations. A letter grading scale is used. 3 Internationalisation All lectures, instruction and teaching material are in English or Somali. We recruit students globally. Informasjonskompetanse Information literacy Instruction in information literacy is included as a topic in the theoretical curriculum and is linked to the students work on writing assignments. The students will receive training about how to search for information and evaluate different sources of information. Emphasis is placed on the students understanding when acquisition of reference information is necessary, and independently being able to find, evaluate and make use of information in their own learning. Use of the University College s e-learning systems will constitute an integrated part of the instruction. Læringsutbytte Learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and general competence) Innhold Content Developed basic knowledge of Somali phonology, orthography, morphology and syntax Developed basic knowledge about the composition and development of the Somali lexicon (such as word classes, central semantic fields, incorporation of loan words in Somali) Good productive and receptive skills in oral and written Somali Discuss topics related to Somali basic grammar The course will include the study of Somali phonology, orthography, morphology and syntax on a basic level. Basic aspects of vocabulary will also be covered, as well as how loanwords are incorporated into Somali. The focus will be on standard Somali. Students productive and receptive skills, orally and written, will be developed through different course activities. Læringsutbytte Learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and general competence) Innhold Content Show knowledge of basic concepts in sociolinguistics related to variation, standardisation and language policies Demonstrate basic knowledge of the sociolinguistic situation of Somali in the Horn of Africa and in Scandinavia Discuss topics related to sociolinguistic issues regarding Somali The course will both include the study of basic sociolinguistic theory and the sociolinguistic situation of Somali. This includes language variation across time, space and situation. The situation of Somali language both in the Horn of Africa and in Scandinavia will be discussed. Læringsutbytte Learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and general competence) Innhold Content Show knowledge about complex grammatical structures in Somali and the interplay between phonology, morphology and syntax Demonstrate knowledge about the development of Somali lexicon in diaspora situations Have advanced productive and receptive skills in oral and written Somali Discuss topics related to complex grammatical structures and incorporation of loanwords in Somali The course will include the study of Somali phonology, orthography, morphology and syntax on a developed level. Complex aspects of vocabulary and grammatical structures will be discussed, as well as issues concerning the incorporation of loanwords into Somali in diaspora settings. 10 2SOM22-4 Course 4: Somali literature Emnekode: 2SOM22-4 Studiepoeng: 7,5 Semester Vår Språk English Forkunnskaper. Læringsutbytte Learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and general competence) Innhold Content Show basic knowledge of literary theory and of the history of Somali literature Demonstrate basic knowledge of fictional texts taken from various genres and different periods, including rhymes, proverbs and poems and songs, as well as stories, folktales, legends, and modern plays Have the ability to analyse fictional texts using basic literary theories and models Discuss Somali literary genres, traditional and modern The course will include basic literary theory and the basics of the history of Somali literature. It will deal with poetical structures and literary techniques, including the use of metaphors. A selection of texts from different literary genres, written as well as oral, will be studied. The different styles of literary performance and the development of modern play will be discussed.
