Our Mission Statement To train body, mind and spirit throught he highest level of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction as a vehicle for individual development and the strenghtening of the famil spirit, going beyond the 'winninlosing' or 'contest' philosophy. History of Gracie Barra Professor Carlos Gracie Jr. Is the founder and head instructor of the Gracie Barra Academy, the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in the world, located in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The son of Carlos Gracie, the pioneer of Brazlian Jiu-Jitsu, Carlos Gracie Jr., has produced well over 200 black belts in his tenure, which today includes numerous world class instructors and athletes. At the heart of the Gracie Barra mission statement is the goal of training both body and spirit, going beyond the 'winnin-losing' or 'contest' philosophy present in other martial arts. Instead, Professor Carlos Gracie Jr. empahzises the fundamental principle of Jiu-Jitsu: Minimum effort for maximum efficiency, a method of utilizing strength through gentleness, an expression exemplifying both the mental and physical aspects of Jiu-Jitsu. In Professor carlos' mind, Jiu-Jitsu was in fact a method of education, which could be used to foster one's personal development. Professor Carlos considered the goals of Jiu-Jitsu to revolve around three aspects: physical education, personal achievement, and ethical growth. In other words, through the practice of Jiu- Jitsu, one would complete their personal development through the training of body and mind, becoming a person better able to ciontribute to society and the world. Recognizing the never-ending quest for self-perfection, even today Professor carlos continues to study these techniques and principles with his students. The constant development of techniques demonstrates Professor Carlos' adherence to these principles, continously striving for further progress and knowledge. In spreading the values of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Professor Carlos is also the head of the IBJJF (international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) the largest international organization for overseeing the growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The IBJJF is the organizer of the largest competition tournaments in the world including the World Championships of Jiu-Jitsu ( Mundials ), held in Rio every July, the Pan-American Championships held in Dominguez Hills, California, the European Championships held in Portugal, also held annually. This year also marks the first Asian Championships to be held in Japan. Gracie Barra Student Creed I intend to develop my self in a positive manner and avoid anything that would reduce my mental growth or my physical health. I will develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in my self and others. I will use what I learn constructively and defensively to help myself and my fellow man and never be abusive or offensive.

2 Family GB Family is a global organization formed by more than 200 BJJ schools. The mission of each of our schools is to train the body, mind and spirit through the highest level of Brazilian Jiu- Jitsu instruction as a menans for individual development and the strenghtening of the family spirit going beyond the competative realm. Inside the GB Family, the famous martial arts principle of maximum efficiency minimum is not restricted to a general principle behind the practice of self defence techniques, but serves as a moral beacon that guides the behaviour of each and every Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner instructors and their students. Since inception, the GB Family has been in constant growth. Under the leadership of Master Carlos Gracie Jr., Gracie Barra has evolved from one small school at the suburb of Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, to more than one hundred schools all around the globe, forming a community of thousands of individuals in the five continents. This growth and change, however, has not undermined our core values that lay at the foundation of our success: Brotherhood: Above all, Gracie Barra is a family. It's members are proud of being a key part of a succesful team that has being able to create something much bigger than themselves. Cooperation: Inside a Gracie Barra BJJ School Dojo, there are no opponents. There are only training partners - Uke ) - engaged in a cooperative learning experience aimed to make each other better not only as BJJ practitioners but as human beings. Discipline: To excel on any endeavor, discipline is essential. It couldn't be different with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At Gracie barra BJJ Schools the discipline of traning and the willingness to sacrifice for higher achievements is reinforced in and outside the Dojo. Respect: Inside Gracie Barra all people must act with warmth and equality toward one another, regardless of difference in race, creed, natioinality, etc. Respect for the hierarchy of the ranks is also very string and the authority of a Black Belt is tryly recognized. 3 Dojo Etiquette 1. Bow to the center of the mat when you enter. 2. Bow to the center of the mat when you exit. 3. Keep a respectful posture on the dojo. 4. Classes begin with a formal bow to the instructor with the students lining up in descending grade order. 5. Classes end with a formal bow to the picture of Carlos Gracie Senior and then to the instructor. 6. During class, when the instructor is demonstrating the techniques, every student must sit in seize. 7. For safety reasons, if you are late sit by the side of the mat and wait for the permission from the Professor. 8. For safety reasons, if you need to leave the mat or leave earlier you must ask permission from the Professor. 9. Bow to your partner before and after practice. 10. Talking should be kept to a minimum level and should relate to the class subject. 11. Absolutely no foul language inside the school 12. Keep fingers and toe nails short for everyone's safety. 13. All students must wear the official Gracie Barra uniform, The uniform pants and top must be the same color. 14. It is mandatory to wear a t-shirt or rash guard underneath the Kimono 15. The Kimono myst be clean at all times, A dirty kimono is a sign of disrespect 16. The Kimono must be worn at all times. 17. When tying the kimono, face the wall 18. The belt represents your progress. Keep it on. 19. Refer to Black-Belt Instructors as Professor and to Carlos Gracie Jr. as Master. 20. All metal objects, jewelry, piercing, neckless or other such items should be removed. 21. No shoes, food or drink on the mat. 22. No cell phones in the dojo area. organized like a team, fighting like a family

4 Gracie Barra Gi Policy Students are not allowed to use non Gracie barra Gi's while in the Gracie Barra Dojo. Non Gracie Barra Gi's with Gracie Barra patches and logos are not allowed in the dojo, but are allowed to be used during competition. Your Gracie Barra top and pants should always match. Other than your Gracie Barra Gi you're only allowed to wear a Rental/Intro Gi provided by Gracie Barra Staff on the mat.

5 Head Instructor: Professor Aldo Caveirinha Januario Professor Aldo Caveirinha Januario is one of many Brazilians born into a family of modest means amidst a poor community in Rio de Janeiro. Sports, specifically Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, provided one of the few opportinities in life. Introduced to Gracie Barra BJJ at the age of 7, Professor Caveirinha soon realized this was his calling. Professor Caveirinha reveiced his Black Belt at the age of 19 and began teaching in his own academy located in Belo Horizonte, MG. Since then, he has been promoted to 3 rd degree Black Belt; a level reached by only a handful of BJJ masters. Despite a very promosing future in competition, Caveirinha instead chose to focus on his real passion; teaching resulting in his graduation more than 45 black belts, including our own Professor Digo, and trained several great Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu professors. I had the pleasure of winning a lot of championships and fighting alongside Marcio Feitosa at the Brazilian Team Nationals, but what I like most is expressing my love for the team and the pleasure I derive from teaching Jiu-Jitsu. For me, the most rewarding thing is to help a student to developing good techniques in practice and go on to win a medal in competition. His next mission in life has brought him to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he will be the head instructor at Gracie Barra of Hawaii, the fastest growing GB academy in the country. Master Carlos Gracie Jr. invited me to go to Hawaii to teach at Gracie Barra University of Hawaii. I expect it to be a bigger gig that what I did in Minas. Today, in Belo Horizonte (the capital of Minas Gerais state) I count 45 black belts, with several world champions and champions of a number of other major events. My team is one of the largest in BH and I intend to do something in even bigger proportions in Hawauii he says. I fell the name Gracie Barra will be very strong there, a reference around the world. Working in the team for 23 years, I went from white to black belt under Master Carlos and, now this new opportinity has arisem I'm not going to waste it. Everyone who knows me knows howdetermined I am and how much I love my team and students. We're going to do great over there!

6 Fundamentals Program The Gracie Barra Fundamentals Program is designed to teach the overall self-defense strategy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Within 32 Classes, you will learn the 60 Gracie Barra Fundamental Technique Groups, which include more than 200 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques. After four months, you will develop the physical and mental skills to successfully apply BJJ-techniques that could literally save their lives during a confrontation. Along with learning practical self defense skills, you will discover huge improvements in your discipline, confidence, and self-esteem, the benefits of which will last a lifetime. Advanced Program Once you get your 3 rd stripe of your white belt, you can move up to the Advanced Program, in addition to continued study in the Fundamentals Program. The 16-week Advanced Program curriculum focuses exclusively on learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the Gi, and will allow you to further your study of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu grappling techniques. In conjunction with the ground techniques, you will learn the major and most effective throwing techniques which will enable you to transition from the feet onto the ground. In addition, the Advanced Program is more than a series of isolated techniques the curriculum includes a unique approach, which allows you to understand the links, combinations, and transitions between techniques, improving your reaction time and refining your skills. During the Advanced Program, you will discover strengths and weaknesses of your technical mastery, and begin to create your individualized Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu game. Black Belt Program With the experience, knowledge and skills built over 1,5 years of training, you will be ready to join the Gracie Barra Black Belt Program. Every Gracie Barra student's goal, no matter their age or technique level, is to join this program because it is the final path for them to become a Gracie Barra Black Belt. The Black Belt Program is designed to expose the student to several different classes and a variety of training experiences, allowing the you to develop a unique style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and to further your mastery of the art. As a result, in the Black Belt Program, more techniques are taught, the pace of the class is faster and more exiting, the level of the training partners is higher, and last but not least, the focus on little details and timing is what will assist you to take your progress to the next level. The Black Belt Program includes three different classes: Gi BJJ classes No Gi BJJ classes MMA Advanced Self Defense classes A brief description of these classes follows: Gi BJJ: The class is 60 minutes long, and includes practicing takedowns, ground techniques, specific training and sparring. No Gi BJJ: The class is 60 minutes long, and includes a set of different submissions and takedowns from the standing position, as well as No Gi BJJ ground techniques MMA Advanced Self-Defense: The class is 60 minutes long, but is focused on developing the student's approach to MMA through the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu perspective. Fighting stance, motion, basic strikes, clinches, ground control and submissions are the core concepts included in this class.
