Norwegian Study Centre at the University of York Short course (2 weeks) UiO: 7-18 March 2016
Director and administrative staff Professor Thomas Egan Felicity Jones Lisbeth Mathers
Academic staff Dr Lalita Murty Dr Terry Hathaway Dr Megan Roughley Dr Beck Sinar Prof. Gweno Williams
Modules (Lalita Murty) Englishes across the world Speaking Playing with language Language of British newspapers Learning and Teaching Teaching spoken language Teaching vocabulary Teaching listening skills
Playing with language This module shows how native speakers bend and break language rules for specific effects in different contexts At the end of the module students will: Become familiar with the range of areas where language play occurs Be able to identify examples of language play in newspapers, advertisements and on the internet Be able to analyse the specific features of language, e.g. words and grammar that are manipulated in order to create a playful effect Be able to identify the functions and purposes that language play has in advertisements, media, grafitti and in everyday contexts.
Modules (Terry Hathaway) The British Political System Current Affairs The Local Global Politics of Chocolate Austerity, Crisis and the State The Press Education
The Press In this module we analyse the workings of the British press. The aim is to both consider the pecularies and organisation of the British press and to develop a working understanding of how the press works to frame and shape understandings of contemporary events.
Modules (Megan Roughley) Practical approaches to literature British Children s literature Multiculturalism in Britain Race and empire Poverty in Britain
Multiculturalism in Britain This module will introduce students to multiculturalism as a specific political principle of Labour governments since 1965; consider the history of the empire, subsequent immigration to the UK from the colonies and the perceived need for legislation to govern race relations; focus on that legislation and the social aspects (housing, education, employment) which it is designed to improve.
Modules (Beck Sinar) Britain s Worst Accent? Love is all around: Today s British English From beck to Whirl: The linguistic legacy of the Vikings The linguistics of literature Unholy sh**: A brief history of swearing Two for ones Only Fools and Horses: Language and culture (with M. Roughley)
Unholy sh**: A brief history of swearing Profanity - the language that offends us - tells us a great deal about who we are and how we got that way. In this module students go on an entertaining and far-ranging historical linguistic journey into the nether reaches of the English vocabulary in order to discover the way swearing has changed over the centuries and the cultural concerns that led to some of those changes. At the end of this module students will: Have a better understanding of how people and institutions censor their language. Know about the original and different meanings of some of the English language's most colourful words. Be able to define euphemisms and dysphemisms and provide examples of each. Have further knowledge about the link between language and society and language and identity.
Modules (Gweno Williams) Lecture + Theatre Visit Where possible, I am delighted to offer an accompanied theatre trip with an introductory lecture. Obviously this depends on which plays are in production locally (York and Leeds).
