3 Inspiration and design at the Nordbygg Fair 2010 The most important meeting place of the construction industry in Sweden gathered almost 60,000 visitors in Stockholm this year. The fair emanated optimism and expectations at the prospect of an expected upturn of the economy with new opportunities emerging on the market. Energy smart and cost efficient solutions made the all-pervading theme for many exhibitors. We could also notice a great interest for these topics among the visitors of our stand. The fair is an opportunity to meet many architects, contractors and other contact persons having the knowledge of the business. Everyone agrees that new ideas and solutions are necessary if we want to build a future based on sustainable development. We got many positive reactions to our contributions to energy smart solutions characterised by a comprehensive approach which places the products in a natural context. Energy efficient façades involve new aesthetic challenges. By using coloured glass, infill panels, solar shading and solar cell panels, we lay the foundation for energy control and energy contribution. The element base façade simplifies the construction process where complex conditions require smart solutions. The 2160 lift-slide door offers large glazed surfaces. A smart solution for the passage between the garden and the veranda. Glass plays an important role in designing doors and partitions. The silk-printed flower pattern shown above gives the element life and character. The colour scheme accentuates the door. Here with the help of Akzo Nobel Griis 150 Sablé and Akzo Nobel Griis 900 Sablé. The E-frame efficiently conceals all cables and gives a pure impression. Coloured glass in combination with a contrasting colour scheme creates clear and communicative architecture. The aluminium handle contributes to the final complete solution.

5 The developer s description The Oxygen building is an impressive new waterside development of 240 apartments, on the edge of the Royal Victoria Dock, within minute s walk of Canary Wharf. These stylish apartments are designed to the highest standards, large triple glazed windows offer unparalleled waterside views across the peaceful Royal Victoria Dock, the vibrant Canary Wharf and the Millennium Dome. The building was aesthetically designed to compliment the other adjacent buildings using terracotta cladding, grey aluminium windows, doors and glazed balconies; however the Oxygen building stands out far amongst the rest with its stepped penthouses on the top four floors. We are extremely pleased with the glazing fenestration, the 74 range of products were ideally suited for this large residential development. The thermally efficient system was also able to accommodate 46 mm triple glazed units required for both U-value and acoustic needs.

The objective was to create a building which offers a modern exhibition environment for office furniture and a pleasant working environment for Kinnarps' personnel. The best possible visibility towards Ring 1 was strived after, and it was in this direction that the exhibition was supposed to open up through the large glazed surfaces of the façade. The function of the building as an exhibition of furnishing solutions for offices and public environments was to be transparent. Due to the shape and the location of the site, the building had to differ from other buildings in the neighbourhood. The unique form of the building which consists of two combined triangles gives it a special character and provides a possibility for interesting and innovative furnishing. At the design stage, the aim was to create a stylistically pure exhibition building with a timeless and sustainable architecture. The planning process can be compared with the planning of an art museum. The products shown in the space create a varied exhibition which lives and is continuously renewed according to new design trends and innovations. The façades of the building consist mainly of fine washed white concrete and coloured glass. The triangle theme has been used in a number of ways in the building. The triangle-shaped main entrance welcomes the visitors inside and leads them further into the partly open triangular hall. The white concrete elements in the façade have the form of repeating triangular outlines that wipe away the vertical joints between them. 8 Quality Spa & Resort Strömstad Presence of nature The architect s description Quality Spa & Resort Strömstad is a hotel complex on what was a previously disused site after being a production area for the building of oil rigs for the North Sea. The building is designed to interact and compliment the surroundings, even though it is clearly the largest building in this modest Swedish town. The hotel is designed as a flowing combination of connecting spaces, both in and out. This open design with the use of large double height glass walls contributes to the strong presence of nature and especially the bay and marina beyond the large reflecting pool in front of the hotel. The guest is always aware of water, which is an integral part of the design. The building has a distinguished individuality, that speaks for itself without causing conflict with the surrounding landscape. The hotel s internal volume engages and creates new exciting spaces for varied activities. It has 116 apartments divided into suites and more conventional double rooms, all orientated towards the sea. Each apartment offers great views without encroaching on the privacy of each room. These rooms are formed into three differing parallel living blocks which float above the two-storey activity plinth. The hotel boasts conference facilities of international standard and the Flow saltwater spa with its 30 treatment stations. The hotel is designed as a combination of clear volumes and spaces connected with the natural elements to maximise the guest experience and enhance the local environment. 11 The architect s description Vision. We have tried to create a stadium the design of which would become a strong and characteristic brand for the town. By means of simple and clear logistic solutions, the great numbers of people are managed in a safe and uncomplicated way, while the shape of the stadium creates the right frame for the joy of expectation and the intensity of competition. The remaining necessary requirements that are usually formulated for a new stadium have been also fulfilled within the framework of the same clear and well-defined design brief. Adaptation to the surroundings, the experience of the players and the public, good view for everyone, good conditions for the sponsors and business stakeholders, rational operation and maintenance are therefore collected in a fine and simple architectural form, where the objective has been from the beginning to create a stadium belonging to the super league. Idea. The idea behind the design is an attempt to gather the entire Esbjerg Stadium in a continuous motion, and in this way obtain a clear and precise building with an iconic that will ensure the Esbjerg Stadium an important place in the Danish top football. The new functions are incorporated in the form language of the stadium and are exposed in an elegant manner as a marked main entrance facing the forecourt. Strong sound effect. The project carries your thoughts behind the existing east stand with a light and airy screen of glass which gives the stadium a friendly and translucent "face" towards the surroundings. The screen encompasses the stadium together with the roof above the stands all the way round in a continuous motion and creates a new strong sound effect inside the closed form of the stadium for a maximum support for the local team. The bottom edge of the glass screen is raised one storey above the ground and hangs almost as an apron from the edge of the stands. Such composition allows for an open space for religious and public events between the parish house and church. Traditional fenced churchyard is replaced with the public space available for all. For good exploitation of such space opening church and parish house hall walls are planned. Design of the structures aims to highlight the centre of Pabrad, form a characteristic silhouette and creates an exclusive religious and symbolic structure matching the environment by means of modern architecture. The church volume is composed in consideration of views from the distant (panoramic) viewpoints, i.e. crossover and highway. The church and the parish house are integrated in the single complex by employing different architectural styles thus emphasizing difference between the buildings and dominance of the divine world. Metaphors of a ship and hands folded for prayer are used. The interior space is solid, calm and solemn; gold cut proportioning system were employed to compose it, and has no unnecessary details. A modern space with traditional features was formed. The emphasis is on the altar. The word of God is spread from the single place and therefore light, space, composition axes, artistic focuses and even the source of sound are concentrated in the presbytery. A solid and harmonious interior of the church helps to concentrate and focus on liturgy. Various functional premises (such as church, service, administration, residential, etc.) are planned in the church and parish house complex thus making the church environment constantly peopled; safety, aesthetics and status of the territory shall improve. Planned functional scheme of the complex is designed in the way that different flows of people never clash; there is a possibility to access all premises without coming out of the building. The Kosta Boda Art Hotel is located at Stora Vägen in Kosta. The area enjoys national interest. The new hotel subordinates itself to the scale of the glass-works and at the same time has a contemporary expression. The architecture of the hotel is unobtrusive in a simple manner. It forms a scenery that accentuates the glass. The glass bar was supposed to become the hotel's distinctive feature. The inspiration comes from the transparency in Edward Hopper's painting in a New York bar where a thin film of glass surrounds the complete loneliness. We wanted to do the same thing but the idea was to replace the loneliness around the glass bar with the joy and spirit of togetherness of the glass. The glass floor, the glass pins as the fittings in the ceiling, the glass furniture and the glass bar all of them shining in the Kosta night really emanate a strong feeling of joy and togetherness. 16 Nordby Shopping Centre The biggest cross-border shopping centre The architect s description Nordby Shopping Centre is the cross-border shopping centre situated right across the Swedish border by the E6 from Halden. Previously, the shopping centre was divided into an east and a west part, but as a result of the latest extension it has been merged into a single facility. The new building was supposed to have a discreet elegance in order to create a good junction between the two rather different buildings it was to connect. An austere box covered with horizontal fibre cement panels gives the impression of weight and the recessed openings with boarding give a nice welcome. Since the building is the main entrance and the central room for the entire shopping centre, it has been provided with generous skylights and large glass façades in order to open it towards the surroundings and let in a lot of light. The windows mainly face to the north in order to avoid excessive heat. The skylights have 4 metre high glass panels where the profiles extend past the ceiling in order to give the impression that the roof is floating. The central room is almost 16 metres high and has a lot of daylight. In darkness, the main entrance and the skylights stand out as warm lanterns and welcome those who approach the centre from a long distance. The existing buildings were also somewhat different from each other as far as the arrangement is concerned, the east building consisting of a number of big halls behind a straight corridor, while the west part being divided in a number of more varied small shops. By joining the storeys together in a smart way a lot of possibilities have been created to circulate inside the centre, and at the same time the difference in the character of the existing buildings has been strongly accentuated. Nordby is no longer two separate facilities, but one centre where thousands of visitors every day get a lighter and better experience than before. Rickard Berger 16

The circular building originally consisted of a central area with a big domed skylight in the middle, surrounded by closed walls made of dark stone with very few entrance doors to offices along the perimeter. The intention behind the reconstruction project was to change the access conditions and to open up the circular building so as to give it a more central role and create an arrival area for the guests with a new reception and a wind sluice built into the bent screen wall. The central room in the circular building is opened up towards the adjacent offices located along the perimeter with hardened glass doors which gives the visitors a sense of the building's volume. The building is divided into cell offices, large offices and new meeting rooms with large glazed partitions which open up the rooms towards the aisles, provide a lot of daylight and lend quality to everyday work. The existing canteen has also been renovated and provided with new cooking facilities and a new serving counter. In addition to this, it has been extended by 180m² and received a large glazed gable wall with an exit onto a terrace.
