2 CDL Training Program Checklist (must be completed before the first day of class) CDL students are required to have a High School diploma or GED equivalent Pass a DOT physical and drug screen at WorkFit. Have results of your drug screen ed to Darryl Partner: dlpartner@mccneb.edu or mailed to: Metropolitan Community College, Applied Technology Center, ATTN: Darryl Partner, State St, Omaha, NE Obtain your Commercial Learner s Permit (CLP) from your Department of Motor Vehicles prior to starting the CDL Training program. You must present your Medical Examiner s Certificate at the DMV prior to testing for the LPC. Request the LPC for Class A CDL. On the DMV application select Category A Interstate Non-Excepted if over 21 years old, otherwise select Category C Intrastate Non-Excepted. Obtain a copy of your driving record from each state in which you ve held a driver s license in the last five years. Nebraska residents go to and select Driver Record Search (One Time) for your Nebraska record. Iowa residents go to for your Iowa record. Registration must be completed at the Applied Technology Center at State Street. Purchase books at the Fort Omaha Campus Bookstore, located in building 10 at 30 th and Fort Streets. The book store typically has the books in stock no sooner than 2-weeks before class starts. Do not purchase the Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED book. *If you do not use WorkFit get your DOT physical and drug screen you must use an FMCSA Certified Medical Examiner. You must direct the facility to release and the drug screen results to Darryl Partner dlpartner@mccneb.edu. A complete, searchable list of Certified Medical Examiners is found at: WorkFit offers a lower price for our CDL students than many other locations so we recommend that you utilize them for you physical and drug screen if possible. WorkFit, Inc. 140 S 77 th St. Omaha, NE Phone: Hours: M-F 8am-5pm WorkFit requires an appointment Drug screens must be scheduled at least 1 hour before closing time. Combined cost for physical and drug screen is $75. WorkFit, Inc. only accepts cash for payment.
3 Truck Driver CDL Training Requirements Complete the following prior to the first day of class and bring to class: 1. Complete a DOT drug screen and Physical at WorkFit, or the Certified Medical Examiner of your choice. Federal law requires that the drug screen be performed no earlier than 30 days prior to the first day of class. If you do not get your drug screen at WorkFit you must request the results be ed to dlpartner@mccneb.edu or kamartin9@mccneb.edu. 2. Obtain Class A Commercial Learner s Permit from your DMV (they require you to provide proof of your DOT physical, so remember to take your DOT physical card). 3. Obtain a copy of your driving record. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require that all drivers operating trucks in the United States be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, understand highway signs & signals, respond to official queries, and make entries on reports and records. Safety is our number one concern at MCC and throughout the transportation industry. Because we operate heavy machinery on public streets it is paramount to your safety, your fellow student s safety, and the public s safety that you be able to respond to verbal directions in a prompt manner. A language barrier may create an unsafe training and learning environment. Accordingly, if English is not your native language, you must complete the ESL Compass before being considered for the program. Obtain your Commercial Learner s Permit from the DMV by completing the required written examinations at the DMV. You must present your Medical Examiner s Certificate at the DMV prior to testing for the CLP. Request the CLP for Class A CDL. If you are over age 21 select Category A Interstate Non- Excepted, otherwise select Category C Intrastate Non-Excepted. The DMV may require you to prove proof of citizenship so it is advised that you have a copy of your birth certificate, passport, or green card with you when you go to get your permit. DMV Written Examinations: To obtain your Class A Commercial Learner s Permit you must pass the following written examinations at the DMV: 1) General Knowledge (50 questions) 2) Combination Vehicle (20 questions) 3) Air Brakes (25 questions) To prepare for your Commercial Learner s Permit (CLP) tests visit any DMV and ask for a copy of the Commercial Driver s License Manual. Focus your study on chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 11, 12, and 13. A practice test can be found at the Nebraska DMV website:
4 It is extremely important for you to have the learner s permit on the first day of class. It is a requirement of the course and not having it could mean having to drop the class. We begin driving the trucks on the first day, but without the learner s permit you can t drive. Just as important, tuition reimbursement rates fall quickly if you don t have the learner s permit and have to drop the class after the first day, you run the risk of surrendering % of your tuition. We are here for your success, having your learner s permit on the first day helps us to give you the best CDL education you can get. Still have questions? Call or the CDL faculty, we ll be glad to talk with you to help you get started in your career as a professional truck driver. The addresses for CDL Faculty are: Kim Martin kamartin9@mccneb.edu Darryl Partner dlpartner@mccneb.edu Our phone number is Course Completion: You will not be administered the DMV Vehicle Inspection, Basic Skills, and Road tests unless you achieve a passing grade in the class. MCC equipment cannot be used to take the DMV tests if you fail the course and/or are not an MCC student. Drug Screen and DOT Physical Site: WorkFit, Inc. 140 S 77 th St. Omaha, NE Phone: Fax: Hours: M-F 8am-5pm WorkFit requires an appointment. Drug screens will not be scheduled after 4pm. Combined cost for physical and drug screen is $75. If you split them, to get the physical first for registration for example, the cost is $40 for the physical and $30 for the drug screen. WorkFit, Inc. only accepts cash for payment. Remember, to participate in the MCC truck driving program you must: Pass the Department of Transportation physical examination and drug screen. Be at least 18 years of age. Have a current driver s license, and Commercial Learner s Permit.
5 Red Flags Many companies are looking for qualified drivers. Strict insurance requirements, the security environment, and the Comprehensive Safety Analysis (CSA) program from the FMCSA have, however, caused carriers to tighten their hiring criteria. Companies today will conduct a thorough and detailed check of an applicant s driving, criminal, and employment history; some also pull an applicant s credit report. Any red flag that gives reason for concern may cause that applicant to be passed over in favor of a more qualified one. While this is not a comprehensive list, here are a few red flags to consider: Felonies & Misdemeanors: This is a huge issue with trucking companies. A felon is not allowed into Canada. If the trucking company runs Canada they might not hire you. Some companies do not allow a felony in a lifetime, others it has to be 7-10 years old (based on completion of sentence). No major misdemeanor convictions in 7 years or minor in 3 years (based on completion of sentence). Multiple felony convictions; child abuse, child neglect, child endangerment, sexual misconduct with a minor; sexual assault; domestic violence; sale, manufacturing or transportation of controlled substances; embezzlement; theft, robbery or burglary will probably eliminate you from most (but not all) transportation jobs. DUI: Charges within the past five years are a bad mark on your record. Some companies require no DUI in a lifetime, others it must be 3-5 years old or, if 2 convictions, both need to be over 10 years old. Three or more DUI convictions may eliminate you all-together, it all depends on the company policy. Traffic Violations: Most companies have a standard of no more than two moving violations in the past year and no more than three in 3 years. The following violations normally will not be allowed within the past 3 to 5 years: Refusal to take a drug or alcohol test, hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident, improper lane changes, following too closely, careless and reckless driving, speeding in excess of 15 mph, open container convictions, revoked or suspended license, or SR-22 insurance to name the most serious. Other issues: Other than the normal physical requirements there are two issues that seem to reoccur in almost every class that will sometimes keep someone from getting a Class A CDL Permit. (1) The student will have an old unpaid traffic conviction that they ve forgotten about; Or (2) the student has an vision problem that only shows up during the DOT Physical exam. Health Concerns: There are many health problems that may eliminate you from overthe-road driving positions. These include severe vision problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure, insulin-dependent diabetes, sleep apnea, and some physical impairments. You won t know if you re qualified unless you consult with a Certified Medical Examiner (CME). Physical Qualifications: A driver must qualify as per part of the FMCSR. Keep in mind that these are basic requirements. Disqualifying issues are far more detailed than listed above but this should emphasize the importance of keeping a clean record if you intend to begin a career as a professional driver. This by no means precludes you from taking the class at MCC, there are companies that have less stringent requirements than others and students with some of these issues have found employment. This information is only offered so that you can make an informed decision about professional driving as a career. The best advice if any of this applies to you is to call companies and explain your situation and ask them if they would hire you.
