4 Miniature and Miniflora Miniature roses are smaller in height and ower sie than ybrid Teas or Floribundas. All our miniature roses are grafted onto Rosa Multiora root stock. This increases the stem length, which is a nice feature for the serious exhibitor. Miniora roses are petit versions of the classical ybrid Tea bushes, but are smaller, more compact, and oriferous. Most of the settling work happens underground and is unseen to us. Pushing the rose to grow in terms of foliage or owering may have negative results on the plant as a whole. It is like feeding steak to a baby. We have seen too many times the negative effects of commercial (non-organic) fertiliers on new roses. It may even result in the collapse of a plant. Palatine roses receive top nutritional consideration during their time at our nursery, and as result they should have enough reserves for their rst growing season. So let your rose feel its way into the ground, let your rose lay its roots down. Be kind to your rst year rose and let it grow... all on its own. 10 FORM ( )

20 Planting Instructions for Bare Root Roses Preparation of the Planting Site Prepare the bed for planting before you expect to receive your plants. Your rose bed should get a minimum of six hours of sunshine per day and have good drainage. For poor soil, we recommend digging out the existing soil to a depth of sixteen to eighteen inches (40-45cm) and replacing it with good top soil. Avoid adding commercial fertilier until your plants are well established (6-12 months after planting). Care of Plants upon Arrival Soak the whole plant in water for a few hours, but not for more than twenty-four hours. Plant as soon as possible even if there is a chance of frost. If it is not possible to plant the roses for longer periods it would be best to bury the plants in soil in a slanted position (45 angle), leaving only the tops visible. Planting a Rose Cut back the tops of the roses either before or right after planting to 5-6 (15-20cm). Should any young soft sprouts have emerged during shipping, these must be cut off because they will dehydrate the plant. Leave only a few sturdy canes; remove weaker canes and those that are too close together. Cut canes at a 45 angle about 1/4 above an outward facing bud, so that new growth will develop up and away from the centre of the plant. Trim the tips of the roots very lightly. For most roses, holes should be two to three feet (60-90cm) apart. A spacing of ve to six feet (1.5m-2m) applies to Old Garden and Climbing roses. Place your plants into the hole with the bud union one to two inches (2-4cm) below ground level. In colder areas, plant two to three inches (3-5cm) below ground level. Spread out the roots and ll in soil to two-thirds full and pack well. Fill the hole with water and let it drain. Then complete lling the hole. Mound the soil up around the base of the new plant to prevent canes from drying out. De-hill the soil to a normal level after 2-3 weeks or after new buds have started to sprout. Summer care Removing the spent bloom helps the rose to re-bloom faster. Deadhead by cutting off the stem just above the rst strong outward pointing true leave (ve leaets). Stop deadheading a month before rst expected frost. That allows the rose to harden off the canes, which signals the plant to prepare for winter dormancy. Stop fertiliing in early August. Remove any suckers that might grow from below the grafting union by ripping them off in a downward motion. Suckers are easily recognied by their smaller, dull looking leaves. 24 Brad Jalbert Striving for Perfection What do Loretta Lyn Van Lear, Auntie Louise and Tootie Moore all have in common? These are all beautiful creations of Canada s own rose breeder- Brad Jalbert. Born and raised in British Columbia Jalbert is a cheery upbeat and hardworking fellow whose motivation for rose breeding is simple - he loves them. Concerned rst and foremost with ease of growing for the average gardener, Jalbert has created a suite of rose trials for his seedlings that are uncompromising. Brad observes his roses for a number of years and is cogniant of ower beauty, fragrance and now more than ever, the health of his roses. According Brad, he doesn t ask a rose to be perfect anymore than I ask people to be perfect. It s hard to believe when you see some of Brad s creations that he isn t striving for perfection. Vibrant colours, glossy clean foliage and magnicent ower form are the norm for any Jalbert rose. Rose breeding is a natural vocation for someone who loves to collect plants. As much as I love breeding roses, I love all plants. I m a 100% plant-aholic laughs Jalbert. Brad feels that breeding roses requires a closer connection to the practical side of gardening and as a result, he surrounds himself with an abundantly diverse garden on an acreage so he can more fully understand the needs of gardeners.
