3 100 1 Foreword The objective of this manual is to provide the users with guidance on how to scan pontics using the 3Shape S200 3D scanner and the specific 3D scanning software, ScanItPontic. It should also make it possible for users of 3Shape DentalDesigner to create their own library of pontics based on real-case scans. The users can refer to User Manual for 3Shape s 3D Scanning Software for a general description of the scanner and associated software. 2 ScanItPontic user interface The specific scanning software, ScanItPontic, offers a graphical user interface that allows the user to adjust scanner settings, start the scan, and to see the result of the scanned object. 2.1 Scan Toolbar The Scan Toolbar located on the left side of the screen is used to perform the scanning and also to set the scanning preference parameters. The following table shows the buttons on the Scan Toolbar: Item Details Scan settings Choose e.g. Scanner IP-address Scan model Starts the scan Transform model transforms the scanned model to proper orientation Remove artefacts Removes artefacts on the scanned model Save Model Saves the scanned object to disk 3
4 2.2 Visualization Toolbar The Visualization Toolbar located on the right side of the screen is used to transform and change the visual appearance of the object on the screen (refer to User Manual for 3Shape s 3D Scanning Software for details). 3 How to scan 3.1 Pontic fixture The needle fixture shown in Figure 3-1 is used to fix the pontic during scanning. The pontic is fixed by pricking one side of it with the needle. The pontic should be painted in white with material preferably approved by 3Shape in order to ensure high scanning quality. This becomes more important if the pontic has a dark colour or its surface appears shiny. The pontic fixture is placed on the interface plate in the scanner so that the top of the pontic points to the left and the front faces outside, as shown in Figure 3-2. Appropriate orientation of the pontic in the scanner will facilitate the following operations. 3.2 Scanning procedure The scanning is operated from the ScanItPontic application. After ScanItPontic starts up and the pontic fixture is placed in the scanner, the scanning is initiated by clicking the Scan button on the Scan Toolbar. Figure 3-1: Pontic fixture with a pontic fixed on it The scanning is followed by post-processing. At the end of postprocessing, the user will be prompted to transform the pontic to the correct orientation (Figure 3-3) according to the following rules: The front of the pontic should point along the Z-direction. The top of the pontic should point along the Y-direction. Top Front Bottom If the pontic has been scanned with the appropriate orientation (see Figure 3-2), the scanned object should be orientated almost correctly and only minor adjustment is needed. The scanned pontic can be transformed either by entering rotation angles around the three axes in the dialogue box and clicking Apply or by clicking the spin arrows and rotating the pontic real-time. Figure 3-2: A pontic placed with appropriate orientation in the scanner 4
5 When post-processing is finished, the user will have a chance to remove the artefacts on the scanned pontic. A dialogue box will pop up (Figure 3-4) when the Remove artefacts button on the Scan Toolbar is clicked. Make sure that the Add Paint button on the dialogue box is pushed down, and then select areas to be modified by clicking on the scanned pontic and dragging the mouse cursor with the left button pushed down through the surface of the pontic. The radius for selecting areas on the pontic can be adjusted by using the track bar under Selection radius. The user can see the effect of removing artefacts by clicking on the Apply button. All selections will be cleared and the model will be restored to its initial state if the Clear All button is clicked. A single selection can be cleared by clicking on it in the box under Selections and pressing the Delete key on the keyboard. If the change is satisfactory, then the user can click on the OK button and the modifications on the pontic will be saved. The user can now select either to save the present scan or to make a second scan of the same pontic by flipping it and scanning with another orientation. A second scan might be necessary to obtain full coverage of the pontic. The orientation of the pontic relative to the scanner in the second scan is the same as in the first scan (see Figure 3-2) except that the pontic is pricked on another side and the top of the pontic points to the right. The second scan is started by clicking on the Scan model button and answering Yes when asked whether to register to the previous pontic. When the second scan is finished, the two scans will be aligned to each other. To do this it is necessary to place two corresponding points (one on each model) to initiate the alignment. The user can refer to Section Merging Scan Assistance in User Manual for 3Shape s 3D Scanning Software for more details about the registration of multiple scans. The following transformation and artefact removal for the second scan are similar to those for the first scan. Figure 3-3: Dialogue box for transforming the scanned pontic to correct orientation Figure 3-4: Dialogue box for removing artefacts on the scanned pontic 5
6 3.3 Save scan to pontic library When the save button, is clicked on, the Add to Library dialogue box will pop up, as shown in Figure 3-5. By entering the correct path, the pontic can be saved directly into a pontic library accessible from the DentalDesigner. It is also possible to use the default customer library Customer Library 1 The users should enter a tooth number according to either the Universal Numeric Notation (UNN) or FDI notation. If Mirror pontic is checked, a mirrored pontic will be saved with the corresponding tooth number. The tooth numbering notation used in the software can be changed by clicking on the Scan settings button on the Scan toolbar and editing the Pontic page of the dialogue box appearing. 4 Adding the library to DentalDesigner When the pontics are scanned, the new library should be added to the DentalDesigner application. If the pontics are not added to the Customer Library 1 this is done by manually editing the Materials. xml file available in the DentalDesigner folder. Figure 4-1 shows the content of the Materials.xml file (the content can always be seen by double-clicking the xml document). Please open the xml document in a text editor, e.g. WordPad or Notepad, when adding a new pontic library. By adding a section in the PonticLibs list analogous to that encircled in Figure 4-1, the new library becomes available for DentalDesigner. Please note the following rules when setting the Property values for the new library: The Name property is displayed inside DentalDesigner. Please choose a descriptive name. The Description property is not used yet. The Active property toggles the availability on/off inside DentalDesigner. The ID property must be a unique string, e.g. XYZ_ PonticLib1 where XYZ indicates the company name. The InRecycleBin property should be false. The LibraryFolder property indicates the actual library path, which is either an absolute path as for the library encircled in Figure 4-1 or a path relative to the DentalDesigner folder as for the first library in the figure. NB: It is strongly recommended to back the XML up before editing it! Figure 3-5: Dialogue box for adding scanned pontic to library Figure 4-1: Content of the Materials.xml file 6
