10 Open Response Please complete a graphic organizer on one of the following open response questions (see below). You may choose to use a graphic organizer of your choice (T-chart, org chart, etc.). We will complete the open response within the first two weeks of school as a means to review both The Outsiders and open response. Open Response Prompts: Choose ONE of the following prompts to organize your thoughts onto a graphic organizer. The rough draft will be completed during the first two weeks of school. 1) Theme: Theme is the overall message the authors is trying to convey to the reader. The Outsiders depicts teenagers as they evolve into adulthood and experience their world changing all around them. Choose a theme (not a topic) and describe how S.E. Hinton illustrates the theme of the story. Be specific and use THREE examples to support your theme. 2) Character Analysis: In The Outsiders, characters change as a result of their experiences in the novel. This makes them dynamic characters. Describe what a character was like in the beginning of the novel. Explain how that same character changes. Use THREE specific examples to support your essay. 3) Symbolism: Symbolism is extensively using a person, place, or object to represent something beyond itself. Symbols can neatly communicate complicated, emotionally rich ideas. Choose THREE symbols from The Outsiders and discuss the meaning of each and how they relate to the story. Use specific details and information from the work to support your answer.
