3 Preamble The Ruth Cohn Institute is an international organisation: enhancing inter-cultural competence is an integral part of its mission. The goal of training is to acquire competence in working with Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI) as conceived by Ruth C. Cohn and according to these Training Guidelines. The competence to be acquired in TCI-training can be achieved in various ways and against different cultural backgrounds, provided they serve the purposes of these Guidelines. The comparability of different training courses is guaranteed by RCIinternational on the basis of these Training Guidelines. RCI-international, its member associations and institutions with cooperation contracts are responsible for organizing the training courses described in the following. All training elements recognized for these courses are taught/led by authorized trainers who have concluded a contract with RCI. TCI-training consists of two parts: Basic training is designed to convey fundamental skills in leading groups according to TCI. It is concluded with a Certificate/Basic Training in Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI). The next step building on this is Secondary Training, which develops the capacity to competently and flexibly apply TCI in different situations and to various group issues within one s professional field of activity and to elucidate this work cognitively in comparison to other methods. It is concluded with a Diploma in Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI). A description of these two training courses follows.

4 1. Basic Training in TCI 1.1 Overview Basic training may take place in two different forms: Basic Training Building Block System over an individually determined period of time Basic Training Predetermined Training Course comprising a training contract, training guidance and a completion guarantee within a period of 2-3 years Decision-making workshop: 9 90-minute-sessions A minimum of minute-sessions: 3 methods (M) and 3 personality (P) courses A minimum of minutesessions: 3 methods (M) and 3 personality (P) courses, of which at least 54 sessions are in courses within the training group and at least 36 sessions in elective courses. a written thesis a written thesis a recommendation from an RCI-trainer, at least two of whose courses have been attended a recommendation from the training group certificate workshop organizer: regional training commission (9 90-minute-sessions) certificate workshop, as a part of the pre-determined training course (9 90-minute-sessions) 1.2 Goals Upon completion: Certificate/Basic Training in Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI) Basic training in TCI leads to the Certificate of Basic Training in TCI. A TCI group leader holding a certificate has the ability to introduce into and experiment with basic elements of TCI when leading groups in his/her professional field. He/she has: consciously further developed his/her own personality in the context of leading groups with TCI, become acquainted with TCI-methods and didactics, learned the basics of TCI and developed the capacity to apply TCI attitudes and methods to his/her group work, studied his/her own professional development and become capable of reflecting on his/her own role in or in relation to organizations/institutions.

5 1.3 Structure The period of time covered by training units is based on RCI standards (1 course = 18 sessions). Training courses can either be held over a period of 5 days, or the time can be divided up in a different fashion. The courses offered for the purpose of Basic Training according to the Building Block System are open to all persons interested in TCI, even if they do not intend to train. A training fee is paid for the training course. This training fee covers the cost of the recommendation and the assessment of the written thesis. For the pre-determined training course, the training fee is included in the overall tuition due Curriculum In order to combine the concerns of getting to know TCI, professional motivation and personality development, the curricula to be drawn up and represented by RCIorganizers must reflect the following four perspectives: the perspective of theory, attitudes and methods in TCI, as experienced and learnt in group work, the perspective of leadership competence, which is a result of the application of course work and of TCI methods and didactics as experienced in theory and practice. the perspective of one s own professional and personal development, of one s own biographically transmitted personal disposition for emotions, attitudes and actions, the perspective of having others and myself experience the effect of me as a person in a group. These four perspectives are not descriptions of types of courses, but rather of generally valid principles to be applied. 1.5 Description of Training Elements For all course types, a course group represents a model, an opportunity and a space for experience according to the principles of living learning Decision-Making Workshop (only for basic training according to a predetermined training course) The decision-making workshop is completed at the beginning of the training option based on a training contract. It is an opportunity to make decisions concerning one s training itinerary and for trainees and trainers to get acquainted Personality Courses (P) Personality courses aim at conscious personality development. They are designed to further develop attitudes, intuition and the ability to assess oneself and others, these being important categories in the TCI-context. Attitude means internalizing the balance of autonomy and interdependence, develop-ing respect for one s own biography as well as that of other group participants.

6 Intuition is based on clarity of perception, sufficient accumulation of relevant facts, trained thought, unblocked, alert emotions (R.C. Cohn). Perception of oneself and others is further developed, as well as practicing responsible action towards oneself and others and thereby extending one s own capacity for action. In TCI-training, personality courses are situated in a context of the individual person, social responsibility and professional activity Methods Courses (M) In methods courses (M) the aim is to experience and achieve a cognitive perception of TCI methods and didactics. Using theory as well as practical, reflected experience, participants deal with the tools of TCI and their meaning for their own professional field of activity: the practical meaning of the axioms and postulates the four-factor-model for controlling processes in learning and working groups finding, defining and introducing themes structuring learning and working processes group processes and their dynamics disturbances and conflicts in groups participatory leadership and leadership intervention Recommendation and Written Thesis The precondition for a recommendation is a self-assessment and a written thesis. The written thesis is to deal with an aspect from an area of applied TCI, in theory and on the basis of personal practical experience. For basic training according to the building block system: the recommendation comes from only one trainer, at least two of whose courses have been attended. The selection of the topic for the written thesis and its evaluation is carried out in cooperation with the trainer who issues the recommendation. For basic training according to a predetermined training course: the recommendation must come from the leadership team. Selection of the topic and evaluation of the thesis are carried out in cooperation with the leadership team; a joint discussion of the finished thesis then takes place in the training group Certificate Workshop (CWS) The certificate workshop (CWS) concludes basic training. Reflecting upon the training completed up to now provides the opportunity to determine one s personal and professional position. Information about the structure of secondary training, as well as what RCI-international has to offer in terms of further training, will be provided during the certificate workshop (CWS).

7 In order to be admitted to the certificate workshop according to the building block system, a complete file of all relevant training documents must be submitted to the competent regional training authorities. For participants in a predetermined training course, the leader s team decides on admission to the certificate workshop (CWS). To conclude basic training providing all requirements have been fulfilled the Certificate / Basic Training in Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI) is to be awarded. 1.6 Certificate of Basic Training Successful completion of basic training is confirmed by means of a certificate. It certifies that its recipient has acquired the basic skills of group leadership according to TCI and specifies the training curriculum completed. The Certificate / Basic Training in Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI) is issued and awarded by the regions, and for basic training according to a predetermined course of studies by the training organization in cooperation with RCI-international.

8 2. Secondary Training in TCI Secondary training in TCI follows an individualized itinerary, accompanied by counseling. 2.1 Overview Introductory Concept Workshop (ICWS) to Secondary Training Length: Admission requirements: Organizer: 18 sessions of 90 minutes Certificate / Basic Training in Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI) RCI-international The training elements are: at least 6 courses = 108 sessions of 90 minutes in the following areas: Personality Development (P) Deepening Courses (D) Supervision (S), Crises in Groups / Individual Crises (C) Other Group Processes (G) A Peer Group accompanying training = 40 sessions of 90 minutes, 20 of them with supervision Two recommendations from RCI trainers: One recommendation resulting from a leadership process. A written thesis on aspects of an application project carried out by the trainee her/himself, its evaluation leading to a further recommendation. Diploma Workshop (DWS) Length: 9 sessions of 90 minutes Organizer: RCI-international Inclusion in a long-term course is possible. Upon completion: Diploma in Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI) 2.2 Goals Secondary training in TCI leads to a Diploma in Theme-Centered Interaction in TCI. A TCI group leader holding a diploma has the ability to lead groups according to / using TCI and to apply TCI comprehensively: He/she has developed a realistic view of him/herself with respect to his/her own personality, has recognized his/her strengths and weaknesses as a leader and learned to deal with them. He/she has learned to receive and offer feedback, to deal with recognition and criticism and express feelings appropriately. In the area of attitude, he/she has dealt with the value system of TCI (axioms and postulates), established and/or examined his/her own position and integrated humanistic values in his/her personal and professional thoughts and actions. He/she has learned to be selectively authentic, to practice leadership based on participation and to show esteem and tolerance for his/her own personality as well as that of others.

9 In the area of methods, he/she has dealt extensively with the methods and instruments of TCI. This includes: leading with theme and structure; the principle of dynamic balance, the significance of the globe, leadership based on participation, chairperson and disturbance postulates, as well as respecting the dynamic in groups and group phases. He/she has developed the capacity to employ and apply TCI in different fields of activity (professional and private) appropriate to the situation and to use this in planning, analyzing and steering group processes. In difficult group situations, he/she has learned to recognize and address disturbances, conflicts and crises in group processes. He/she is aware of the possibilities for and limits to solving them. He/she has learned to deal with his/her professional role and with the dynamics of organizations / institutions, to recognize the possibilities and limits of TCI in this context, to put them to use and phrase them in his/her own words. He/she has studied his/her own attitude towards people from other linguistic and cultural areas. He/she is in favor of interculturality as a social reality. 2.3 Structure The entrance requirement for participation in secondary training is a Certificate / Basic Training in Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI). The Introductory Concept Workshop (ICWS) takes place at the beginning of secondary training. Secondary training allows for the elements contained in the RCI Training Guidelines to be adapted to the individual needs arising from a diploma candidate s personal and professional situation. As a basic principle, experience should be gathered in all five course areas (P,D,S,C,G). The recognition of training elements outside of TCI training is regulated by the implementation guidelines. Training candidates select the focus that is most relevant for their professional field. In this way, they have the opportunity to meet persons from their own professional area as well as from other professional fields, where comparable methods variables are important, and exchange views with them in training groups, thus learning from each other. In so doing, they experience a deepening of their understanding of TCI in terms of attitude and method. The decision as to how many courses from which course categories should be attended is developed by the diploma candidate in his/her training counseling process, which begins with the Introductory Concept Workshop (ICWS). Within the course of training as a whole, a course with the theme of group processes, disturbances and conflicts in groups is required. Individual courses and block courses can be offered either for a specific professional field or without a specific professional focus. In order to earn a diploma, experience in all areas of training must be documented. Amendments to a training itinerary, other than those agreed upon at the Introductory Concept Workshop (ICWS), must be documented and justified.

Description of Training Elements Introductory Concept Workshop (ICWS) Secondary Training begins with the Introductory Concept Workshop (ICWS). In a group process of closely examining himself/herself, as well as TCI s approach and the basic conditions of the TCI training according to RCI-international, each participant develops within the Introductory Concept Workshop his/her individual concept for the secondary training, focussed especially on his/her professional application. Goals and content are, among other things: Pinpoint, formulate and agree upon personal learning issues for secondary training within relationship to the envisaged field of application. The draft curriculum resulting from this process is entered into the study book and serves as a basis for further training. Close examination of the training elements. In-depth study of the historical development and theoretical fundamentals of TCI. The Training Portfolio of RCI-international is responsible for the Introductory Concept Workshop (ICWS) Training Counseling Training Counseling is documented in the study book. It takes place in the course of secondary training: During the Introductory Concept Workshop (ICWS), provided by the leading TCItrainer, as well as in the form of consultation among colleagues within the group of participants. In all training courses, provided by the TCI-trainers. It is offered by the regional training commissions. It is provided upon request by an accompanying mentor. Those offering training counseling should stress that it is desirable for each individual training itinerary to cover as diverse a range of TCI-trainers and course groups as possible Peer Group Participants in secondary training who have arrived at more or less the same stage in their training form a peer group, which they organize themselves and to which they lend an appropriate organizational structure (length of meetings, preparation, leadership, etc.). The peer group is their continual companion during the course of secondary training. It provides an opportunity for exchange and support within the personal learning process and with respect to participants training focuses. The group is a practicing ground on which leadership of TCI-groups can be tested and providing opportunities to experience fun and encouragement in connection with group leadership. The peer group is a space in which things are experienced, in which group processes are felt and made transparent. The group is led by the participants themselves, and avails itself of supervision by TCI-trainers for its own work and development. Peer group supervision accompanies and works with the specific leadership of sessions by participants and with the group processes occurring within the peer group.

11 A continual exchange relating to TCI and its application to one s own professional field as well as reflection on participants professional organization / institution take place in the peer group Personality Courses in Secondary Training (P) Personality courses provide the opportunity to look at personal issues together with others. In course category P, the goal is to achieve an in-depth awareness of one s own personality in dealing with difficult situations, in personal development, in learning and working groups and in the course group, a further development of communication skills and emotional competence Deepening Courses (D) Deepening courses comprise an in-depth analysis of methods, attitudes, theories and the philosophy of TCI, as well as their application to various fields of activity. They are offered in the following dimensions: Methods, e.g. contracts/settings, processes, interventions in groups and with individuals, conflicts, disturbances in groups. Forms of activity, e.g. small groups, large groups, compulsory groups, children s groups, conferences, teams, counseling settings. Fields of activity, e.g. social work, school, therapy, adult education, the corporate area, churches, administration. Political and social activities: issues of principal, current political topics, environmental concerns, etc Crisis Courses (C) The aim of a crisis course is to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of: personality structures and psychopathological forms of behavior in individuals and their repercussions on the group process, adequate forms of prevention and intervention in non-therapeutic groups. Participants own individual scope for action in dealing with disturbances, conflicts and crises is to be extended by dealing with their individual personality structures Supervision (S) In the advanced stages of their training, training candidates avail themselves of supervision with regard to the application of TCI to their professional area and in dealing with their own professional role. Supervision can take place: In supervision courses, In a continual supervision group, In exceptional and justified cases, in individual supervision sessions. Supervision can be offered by: TCI-trainers with supervision competence, Diploma-holders with supervision training based on TCI. As for TCI-trainers, their commitment to the prevailing training provisions is governed by a contract.

Other Group Processes (G) In addition to dealing with TCI, training candidates should at least once get to know and experience another educational or therapeutic model of group work or group leadership which differs from the specific methods of TCI. This serves to point out what is specific to TCI methods and expand the trainees leadership repertoire Recommendations and Written Thesis Recommendations result from the interplay of self-evaluation and evaluations by others. They are therefore a significant element of the training process. They are drawn up by a TCI-trainer. One recommendation is the result of co-leading in a TCI course or of the participation of a TCI-trainer in a leadership process of the diploma candidate that is linked to his/her professional field of activity. A second recommendation is the result of the evaluation of an application project carried out by the candidate and of a thesis written on this project. This thesis provides a reflection on aspects of a TCI application project that has been planned and carried out by the candidate him/herself. A TCI-trainer provides advice on this project. The recommendations are to be made by different TCI-trainers Diploma Workshop (DWS) The diploma workshop (DWS) concludes secondary training. The diploma workshop is organized by RCI-international. In order for a candidate to be admitted to the diploma workshop (DWS), a complete set of training documents must be submitted to the regional committee responsible for granting admission. The content of the diploma workshop (DWS) consists of: reflecting on and evaluating the training itinerary and personal training success developing the role as a TCI-diploma holder in one s professional field of activity reorientation as a TCI-diploma holder The certificate Diploma in Theme-centered Interaction (TCI) will be awarded at the conclusion of the workshop. 2.5 The Diploma Certificate The Diploma in Theme-Centered Interaction certifies that its recipient has acquired the skill of competently and flexibly applying TCI in different situations and to different concerns within his/her professional field of activity, as well as of cognitively elucidating TCI in comparison to other processes.
