1 What every quilter loves fabric, food and friendship! a quilting journey Dear Shop Owners, As we begin our third year at Moda University, we would like to welcome our new members and say thank you to our returning shops. We appreciate your input and support. New for the year is our Piece and Plenty Mystery Quilt Series. We asked each of the Moda designers to submit a basket block to be included in this mystery quilt. This series replaces the postcard blocks and bonus patterns from previous years. Piece and Plenty, as the tag line states, provides "What every quilter loves fabric, food and friendship"! This year long program will feature a Moda designer each month. It is fun to guess which block belong to which designer. We will provide you, the shop, with kit packaging (15 pre-printed envelopes), a "Shop Helper" sheet, master copies of the cutting directions, the pattern and a recipe for each month. We have so many talented designers that the fourth month of each semester will feature two designers. The fabric choices are given only as values light, medium light, medium, medium dark and dark. You may choose to kit by designer collections, colorways such as brights, 30's, jewel tones, etc. The choices are limitless. We encourage you, as always, to use fabrics which are on your shelves. Constantly changing inventory gives a shop a fresh new face each time a customer visits. It is also a perfect opportunity to move some of your less loved fabrics. Directions for cutting and piecing the filler blocks for the Piece and Plenty Mystery Quilt will be included in each month's "master packet". This quilt is truly a mystery, as the final directions will not be available until the third semester. The basket block of the month and the filler blocks will not always appear in the same section of the quilt, so color selections will move all across the final quilt. Please copy the "master pages" for each of your kits. New this year two kinds of cutting directions will be included each month. First there will be very specific directions; example: cut a 8"x15" medium dark rectangle and a 5"x5" light square. This can become very tedious when cutting many kits. So this year directions for "Easy Cuts" will also be included. The yardage for "Easy Cut" directions will be rounded up (never down) and will be in common cuts, such as WOF, fat quarters and fat eighths, whenever possible. This will give the customer more fabric than is actually needed (We are aiming for 1¼ 1½ total yards each month to retail at $10-14). The extra bits of fabric can be used as an additional scrappy border or a pieced back. It will also enable each quilter to make different choices and therefore a more scrappy quilt. Plus it will be quicker and easier for you, the shop, to cut and kit each block. Choose the cutting method that works best for you. There is a recipe to share each month. Some would be great for sharing at the monthly Moda U meeting. But in our planning, we were thinking more along the lines of a potluck or progressive dinner at the end of the term when the mystery is revealed. The choice is yours. We would welcome feedback about what each of you did menu, times etc. It is our sincere hope that you have as much fun with this project as we did in planning it. And most of all we wish you both Piece and Plenty in the coming year Mystery Quilt
