1 Grades 11 and 12 Special Education Consumer Mathematics provides a framework for understanding many math skills that you will need now and later in life. This course is designed for students with mild disabilities working towards a certificate of completion. This course is designed for secondary and adult students who have a basic grasp of mathematical computation but require additional instruction for applying these skills as a wise consumer. The goal is to provide students with consumer math skills needed to function as independent, employable, and contributing citizens of society. *You will see Avon Added Indicators signified by green highlighting throughout the curriculum document. Example: AAI.A.F.1.1. translates to: Avon Added Indicator/Algebra and Functions/1st grade/1st addition. *Indicators deemed most important at the state level are highlighted in yellow throughout the document.
2 Standard 1 - Employment and Consumer Skills Students will demonstrate transferable and employability skills in community and consumer settings. AAI CM.1.1 Apply communication skills in community and consumer issues AAI CM.1.2 Demonstrate leadership skills and abilities AAI CM.1.3 Demonstrate consumer ethics and professionalism AAI CM.1.4 Apply the steps in a rational decision making process to financial decisions AAI CM.1.5 Explain the importance of starting early to implement a financial plan Sample Student Activities: Level 1: AAI CM.1.2 AAI CM 1.3 Knowledge/Comprehension Given a word such as "leadership" on a sheet of paper, work with a partner to create a list of examples of how a consumer would show "leadership" or their given word. AAI CM.1.3 AAI CM.1.5 Given a series of scenarios involving an inaccurate bank statement, separate in cooperative learning groups to read and create a dramatization of the situation to the class, demonstrating appropriate conflict resolutions using consumer ethics and professionalism. Develop a monthly budget given expense with an income of $1,500 and adjust to balance.

4 Standard 2 - Resource Management Students will demonstrate mamagement of resources including food, clothing, shelter, and transportation. AAI CM.2.1 Examine how resources are used to satisfy needs and wants. AAI CM.2.2 Identify goods and services and distinguish between buying goods and buying services. AAI CM.2.3 Analyze decisions about providing safe and nutritious food. AAI CM.2.4 Analyze decisions about purchasing and maintaining clothing. AAI CM.2.5 Identify housing and furnishing needs. AAI CM.2.6 Apply consumer skills to acquire and understand different types of transportation. Sample Student Activities: Level 1: Knowledge/Comprehension AAI CM.2.1 Define needs vs. wants using catagories of food, shelter, clothing, and transportation AAI CM.2.3 Analyze a food label for nutrious content and the discuss the affects to your health for the particular item. AAI CM.2.6 Plan a transportation route to work, stores or appointments including mode of transportation and cost related to desired transportation.

AAI CM.4.3 Discuss the importance of taking responsibility for personal financial decisions. AAI CM.4.4 Describe how insurance and other risk-management protect against financial loss.
