3 NIDRR s Mission To generate new knowledge and to promote its effective use to improve the abilities of individuals with disabilities to perform activities of their choice in the community; and To expand society s capacity to provide full opportunities and accommodations for its citizens with disabilities. 3
4 Scope of NIDRR Mandate Cross-Disability Work: Physical and mobility impairments; Sensory impairments; Cognitive impairments; and Psychiatric disability. Cross-Lifespan Work: Children, youth, and families; Working-age adults; and Individuals aging with lifelong and early-onset disabilities, and those aging into disability in mid- to later- life. 4

11 NIDRR Goals in the Long-Range Plan Goal 1: Create a portfolio of research, development, and other activities that balances domains, populations of focus, and who defines the specific approach to a disability or rehabilitation research topic Goal 2: Support centers and projects that conduct well-designed research and development activities using a range of appropriate methods Goal 3: Promote the effective use of knowledge in areas of importance to individuals with disabilities and their families Goal 4: Improve program administration 11
