3 I. The Purchase College Mission Statement Mission: Purchase College, SUNY, offers a unique education that combines programs in the liberal arts with conservatory programs in the arts in ways that emphasize inquiry, mastery of skills, and creativity. Our graduates contribute to the arts, humanities, sciences, and society. Vision: Purchase College will be recognized nationally and internationally as the leading public institution to pair conservatory programs in the arts with liberal arts programs. We will continue to create opportunities for transformative learning and training in a community where disciplines connect, intersect, and enhance one another. Values: Purchase College celebrates individuality, diversity, and creativity in a community of educational excellence. II. The Purchase College Intercollegiate Athletics Mission Statement Intercollegiate Athletics at Purchase College, SUNY is aligned with the College s mission and was instituted to enhance the educational opportunities and experiences offered by the College. In addition, its role is to assist in the development of campus life and help build a sense of community for the campus. The Athletic Program is committed to seeking out diverse and qualified student athletes who can excel in the classroom as well as on the playing field. As part of the Division of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics, the Intercollegiate Athletics Program aims not only at the physical development of athletes, but also fosters the development of a diverse, well-rounded education for the student athletes. The Intercollegiate Athletics Program offers athletes an opportunity to learn the lifetime skills of commitment, sportsmanship, character development, responsibility, dedication, respect, selfdiscipline, teamwork and camaraderie. It also offers the campus community a chance to share in the enthusiasm, enjoyment and excitement of college athletics. The athletics program offers student athletes the opportunity to interact in a variety of sport experiences that promote mental, physical, emotional and social well being. The medium of sports provide the coach with exceptional teaching opportunities to guide, develop and influence student athletes so their athletic experiences are positive, constructive and foster the development of a well-rounded person. III. Student-Athlete Eligibility 1. All athletes must be fully matriculated students in a degree-seeking program carrying a minimum of 12 credits per semester. 2. Athletes cannot compete in more than one sport per season unless under special circumstances. However, multiple sports in different seasons are acceptable. If the student-athlete trains in the off-season for a particular sport while participating in a sport that is in season, the priority would be to the sport that is in-season. In addition, the

4 student-athlete must be in good academic standing. 3. Coaches are responsible for having the student-athletes complete the Athlete Info Cards prior to a player practicing and being cleared by the Athletic Director to participate. The Assistant Athletic Director and the Compliance Officer will contact the appropriate offices for verification of player eligibility. 4. Athletes may not be on academic probation. They must maintain a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 to be eligible to participate on an athletic team. If an athlete is on disciplinary probation his/her eligibility will be reviewed by both the Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director. 5. All athletes must have a current medical exam completed and handed in to the Athletic Trainer before an athlete can participate on a team. 6. Team rosters must be filled out and submitted to the Assistant Athletic Director before the end of the first week of practice. 7. The current academic advising policy for athletes requires that if a student s G.P.A. falls below a 2.5, or they are freshman, they must make an appointment with the Learning Center to have a tutor assigned to help with the weak subjects. 8. It is expected that coaches will work with the Intercollegiate Athletics advisor to identify student-athletes who may need help and to insure that student-athletes remain academically eligible. All coaches should meet with their athletes on a weekly basis to monitor their academic progress and obtain help for those who may need it. The Intercollegiate Athletics Academic advisors will serve as a resource person along with the Director of the Learning Center and the Director of the Advising Center. 9. All transfer students must see our NCAA. Compliance Officer to have a transfer verification form sent to their previous institution before they are cleared to participate in our program. 10. All student-athletes must have their own personal health insurance coverage or the College s health insurance coverage and verify same on our required Insurance Information Form before participating in our athletic program. The Athletic Program carries a secondary policy with a $250 deductible (subject to change) to cover medical bills not covered by primary insurance. (See attached memo and Emergency Contact & Insurance Information Form.) 11. All student-athletes are required to read, sign and comply with code of conduct policy distributed at the beginning of the academic year and/or athletic season. IV. Athletic Academic Advising The Athletic Program has set up an Academic support system to assist studentathletes who may need help with their academic class work and schedules. Resources for Help and Assistance:

5 a. Your faculty and coaches are your first support line. If you are having a problem speak to your professors and seek help directly from them. As soon as possible, inform your coach of any academic problems you are having. We are all here to support you in your educational process at Purchase College. b. With questions involving schedules, academic problems, difficulty in class work and assignments, the Advising Center is an excellent resource for you. Contact Ryan Homsey at Ext c. For help with class work, assignments and academics in general, the Learning Center is an excellent resource for you. Tutors and professional help will be offered to you to assist you with your academic success. The number for the Learning Center is Ext d. The Counseling Center is also an excellent resource if you are experiencing any emotional or personal relationship issues. *Contact Joseph Cloidt or Cathy Van Bomel Ext. 6390* V. Health and Safety a) The Athletic Department is very concerned about the health and safety of all our athletes and we do everything we can to ensure their welfare. All student-athletes are required to have a physical prior to each season of their participation in any sports program. All medical forms must be completely filled out and signed by a licensed physician showing that the athlete is cleared for participation in their respective sport. After being filled in and signed all Medical Forms must then be turned into our Athletic Trainers prior to the athlete s participation in any sport. Forms are available in the Athletic Training office or Athletic website. b) It is important to note that we have two fulltime professional Athletic Trainers on our staff to treat and rehab any injuries a student-athlete may sustain during practice or competition. We have an up-to-date training room with all the standard modalities of treatment to assist student-athletes when needed. Any injuries sustained during practice or competition should be immediately reported to our Athletic Trainers for evaluation and/or referral within 24 hours, if necessary. To contact our Athletic Trainers, please call Extension 6539 or c) In addition, we have a well equipped Health Center on campus to take care of all student s daily health issues and concerns. They can be contacted at Extension d) Purchase College has a zero tolerance policy on hazing, and the consequences can be severe. Participation in hazing activities may lead to individual disciplinary action, team disciplinary action and/or termination of the team or student organization. The College defines hazing as any action or activity that recklessly endangers the physical or mental health of a person, or that violates the dignity of another person. Hazing is further defined as any activity that is expected of someone to join a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses or

6 endangers them, regardless of intention or willingness to participate. Initiation activities and initiation parties fall into this category. The College enforcement of hazing will prevail regardless whether it is conducted on or off the College premises. Hazing activities may include but are by no means limited to the following team functions: use of alcohol; nudity; paddling in any form; branding or shaving; creation of excessive fatigue; consumption of excessive and/or an unusual combination of food; physical and psychological shocks; quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips or any other such activities conducted on or off campus; wearing of apparel that is conspicuous and not normally in good tastes; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other activities that are not consistent with state and local law (including legal drinking age), or the regulations and policies of Purchase College. VI. NCAA. Compliance All NCAA Division III Compliance issues are handled by our Compliance Officer, Robert Ciafardini. Prior to the start of each season our Compliance Officer will meet with each team to explain the NCAA Division III Eligibility Rules, drug testing and each student-athlete must fill out all required NCAA paperwork before being declared eligible to participate on a team. If a student-athlete has any questions about rules, compliance and eligibility he/she must see our Compliance Officer. His office is located on the 3 rd floor of the gym building and he can be reached at extension 6540.
