1 Nonprofit Closures, ergers and Alliances Report Summary (as of January 31, ) The Council began tracking nonprofit closings and mergers in 2008 when the economy began its downturn. We reported in February with information from funders--particularly community foundations--and media reporting. In this second report we have also received information from Nonprofit Association and Pro Bono Partnerships. If you are aware of any other nonprofit activity not listed in the report or have a clarification, please let us know. You will find the list of reported nonprofit activity following the charts. Definitions We loosely used definitions from Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) publication by David La Piana and Amelia Kohm, In Search of Strategic Solutions, a funders briefing on nonprofit strategic restructuring (2003): An ALLIANCE involves a commitment to continue for the foreseeable future; decisionmaking power is shared or transferred; and is agreement-driven. Examples include both programmatic and administrative alliances. Through ERGERS, previously separate organizations completely combine programmatic, administrative and governance functions. General Observations The following are some of the facts about the listed nonprofit closures, mergers and alliances: There were a total of 76 nonprofit mergers (43), closures (28) and alliances (5). The activities in (20) has surpassed the number of activities in 2009 (19), the second year of the downturn. 3 organizations closed, but then opened at a later date. 7 organizations closed, but their services were picked up by another organization. The numbers of activity by county are: Fairfield (26), Hartford (18), /iddlesex (15), Eastern CT (7), Litchfield (4), Statewide Organizations (7). 221 ain Street, Hartford CT phone: fax:
