For more information, go to math.ku.edu/academics/undergraduate Retroactive Credit for Foreign Language Study in High School Most KU language departments offer retroactive credit if you begin your language studies in a specific advanced course and receive a grade of C- or better. You may receive both advanced placement and retroactive credit, but if the advanced placement credit is the same as the retroactive credit, only the retroactive credit will be awarded. To receive the exemption, take your official high school transcript to the Department of Communication Studies, 102 Bailey Hall. You ll receive a letter verifying the exemption. The awarding of retroactive credit is subject to the following restrictions: Your initial university-level enrollment in a language class must be at KU. You must complete the KU course with a grade of C- or better. After completing the course with the qualifying grade, you must check with the appropriate language department for verification. The departmental office will then notify the Office of the University Registrar of the number of credit hours awarded. if you initially enroll in a course under the specified minimum level, you will receive no retroactive credit. The University charges a fee of $50 for retroactive credit, regardless of how many credit hours you receive. Credit for Proficiency in a Foreign Language For a bachelor of arts degree in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and for most other schools within the university that require foreign language study, you are required to show proficiency in a language other than English. If you believe that you are proficient in a language, you may take the proficiency examination through the Ermal Garinger Academic Resource Center. An oral interview may be required. If you pass, you are not required to complete any further course work in that area. Students who pass the proficiency exam have usually completed four or more years of study of that language. For more information, go to admissions.ku.edu/foreignlanguages languages.ku.edu
6 College Level Examination Program (CLEP) admissions.ku.edu/clep KU awards credit for passing some of the CLEP examinations. If you believe you have a strong knowledge of the material that would be taught in one or more courses in a particular area, you may want to take a CLEP exam, administered by KU Testing Services. Each school or department has different curriculum requirements and may use the scores in different ways. Satisfactory minimum exam scores usually fall between the 50th percentile and the 70th percentile. If you earn a satisfactory exam score, you may: Receive credit for a comparable KU course OR receive an exemption from course prerequisites, without receiving credit hours Credit for U.S. Military Courses admissions.ku.edu/militarycredit If you submit a copy of your DD-214 discharge papers, KU will grant you 4 credit hours in Health, Sport & Exercise Science for completing basic training. Some ACE-recommended credit may also be awarded for military courses. To find out if you can receive credit, submit a transcript of military courses completed. KU will accept CLEP/Dante scores from an official military transcript. For more information, contact Testing Services at testing.ku.edu or For additional information: Transfer Credit Coordinator transfercredit@ku.edu For more information on how classes taken at other colleges or universities will transfer to KU, visit admissions.ku.edu/credtran ADM00222 KU is an EO/AA institution.
