Objectives: Learn Ruby and Ruby on Rails, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript and jquery, pair programing, Github, and application program interfaces (APIs) Beginner HTML & CSS Schedule: September 1 to November 10, Tuesdays from 6:00pm to 9:00pm Tuition: $2,000! 1
Description: You don t need prior coding experience to take Beginner HTML & CSS. We actually expect it! HTML and CSS are a great place to start because they're the two dominant languages of the web and the skeleton of all websites. If you're proficient with HTML and CSS, then you'll understand how other sites are made and you'll be able to build sites of your own. In 11 weeks, you ll be able to take a design and translate it into HTML and CSS for the web. You'll learn how to customize your site with fonts, images, audio, video and get it online. Objectives: write HTML and CSS, add links, images, audio and video, position elements on a web page, style content and modify background colors, create forms to gather user input, deploy your site to the web, write code using the Sublime text editor, layout elements on a page, use Github to store and retrieve code, work with the Bootstrap framework Advanced HTML & CSS Schedule: September 2 to November 11, Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 9:00pm Tuition: $2,000 Description: If you've got basic HTML & CSS skills and are interested in building out your own website or pursuing a career in front-end development, this is the program for you. You ll learn advanced HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to design and code interactive websites. All the while, building out a portfolio to help you fulfill your career goals. Objectives: write eloquent HTML, CSS and JavaScript, create animations, transitions and transforms using CSS & JavaScript, implement HTML5 video and other optimizations, optimize your site for mobile devices with responsive design, use Sass to write more efficient CSS, create client-side interactions with jquery, use Github to collaborate with developers, deploy to Heroku and set up custom domains, adopt best practices and streamline your workflow. Starter School Schedule: No future classes announced, Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm Tuition: $36,000 Description: In 9 months, full-time Monday through Friday, you will learn how to build a web application that you care about. You'll be immersed in engaging classroom sessions with hands-on labs, deep-dive workshops, and focused product development. You'll apply what you're learning to your own ideas at every step. Objectives: Learn Ruby and Ruby on Rails, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript and jquery, pair programing, Github, and application program interfaces (APIs), write HTML and CSS, add links, images, audio and video, position elements on a web page, style content and modify background colors, create forms to gather user input, deploy your site to the web, write code using the Sublime text editor, layout elements on a page, use Github to store and retrieve code, work with the Bootstrap framework, write eloquent HTML, CSS and JavaScript, create animations, transitions and transforms using CSS & JavaScript, implement HTML5 video and other optimizations, optimize your site for mobile devices with responsive design, use Sass to! 2
write more efficient CSS, create client-side interactions with jquery, use Github to collaborate with developers, deploy to Heroku and set up custom domains, adopt best practices and streamline your workflow. JavaScript Schedule: No future classes announced Tuition: $2,000 Description: You ve built a web app from scratch, you know enough Rails, HTML & CSS to be dangerous and you re ready to add some interactions to your work. Learning JavaScript, jquery in particular, is the best way to get there. This class will teach you everything you need to get started with fundamental JavaScript, along with enough core programming principles to make you comfortable turning your own ideas into real, functioning. Objectives: Learn how programming concepts in Ruby are handled in JavaScript, the basics o capturing user behavior through JavaScript events, using events to change content and styles, Backbone.JS best practices, and how to use a Rails API with Backbone.JS to build dynamic applications. Gain a deep understanding of how Backbone.JS works and learn Ajax, JSON, MVC and other important acronyms. User Experience Schedule: August 17 to October 26, Mondays from 6:00pm to 9pm Tuition: $2,000 Description: A site that is beautiful to look at or one that uses the latest technology may not meet real user needs. User experience design is about making all the elements come together so you can create something meaningful, useful, and pleasurable for the people you're trying to reach. This class will give you the skills to research, test, and validate your ideas. Objectives: Learn best practices in assessing the usability and aesthetics of web sites and applications, exploratory design research techniques like field observation and interviews, User model creation, such as personas and mental models, techniques for generating new ideas that meet real user needs, conceptual design techniques like sketching, Interaction design and information architecture tools such as wireframes in Balsamiq, site maps, flows, and card sorting activities, and usability testing to validate design with users. Visual Design Schedule: No future classes announced Tuition: $2,000 Description: Visual design isn't just what the web looks like, it's what the web feels like. To qualify for a refund a student must return all materials he/she may have received. If tuition was paid by a third party, any refund due will be paid to that third party. In no event may a refund exceed the amount that The Starter League received for the Program. A student who wishes to withdraw and cancel an enrollment agreement at any time must notify the Starter League in writing in one of the following ways: By at admissions@starterleague.com By letter sent postal mail to The Starter League, Attn: Student Withdrawal, 30 N Racine Ave Ste 210, Chicago, IL By hand delivered letter The student has the right to cancel the initial enrollment agreement until midnight of the 5th business day after the student has been admitted. Those failing to meet student conduct standards may be subject to disciplinary actions, including but not limited to termination without refund. Inappropriate classroom conduct includes but is not limited to: (1) disruptions to the learning environment (i.e., use of profanity, harassment, cell phone use in classrooms, etc.); (2) deliberate destruction, misuse, or theft of Starter League property or the property of fellow classmates; (3) violence or threats of violence toward persons or property of students or Starter League staff; (4) improper use of and Internet access; and (5) failure to comply with federal copyright and criminal laws forbidding the misappropriation, copying, or alteration of copyright protected materials.! 5
V. Student Success Data! 6
VI. Accreditation Information The Starter School and the Starter League are not currently accredited. There are pros and cons to seeking accreditation. It gives us access to government money, but it also requires a more rigid structure for how our school can operate (grades, reports, slow-moving approval mechanisms). Not being accredited has enabled us to be agile and flexible so we can easily improve our program without bureaucracy. VII. Transferability of Credit The Starter League does not guarantee the transferability of credits to another school, college, or university. Credits or coursework are not likely to transfer; any decision on the comparability, appropriateness and applicability of credit and whether credit should be accepted is the decision of the receiving institution and it is important that any student consult directly with any institution to which he/she wishes or intends to transfer regarding transfer of credits. VIII. Additional Information Additional information about the Starter League and the Starter School may be found on the school s websites, and and in the school s Enrollment Agreement, a sample of which is enclosed as Addendum A to this Catalog.! 7
