1 DATA SHEET Cisco Four-port c/stm-16c POS Line Card for Cisco Series Internet Routers Tremendous growth in Internet traffic is fueling IP networks to scale to higher speeds with increased interconnect densities. The Cisco Four-port c/stm-16c POS Line Card efficiently concentrates four 2.5 Gigabits per second (Gbps) channels into one 10 Gbps slot within Cisco Series routers, enabling efficient slot utilization. Product Overview Service providers need to scale their IP networks with high-speed optical interfaces to provide the throughput necessary for delivering next generation IP services. The Cisco Four-port c/stm-16c Packet over SONET/ Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (POS/SDH) Line Card delivers unmatched forwarding performance and an extensive Internet Protocol and Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP+MPLS) feature set, addresses the needs of interconnecting routers within points of presence (POPs), improves interconnect densities for delivering traffic to the core, and enables new high speed 2.5 Gbps access services. Supported by the Cisco series Internet router distributed architecture, the Cisco Four-port c/stm-16c POS Line Card features a dedicated Layer 3 forwarding engine that offers an industry-leading 25 million packets per second (Mpps) lookup performance per line card slot for both IP forwarding and MPLS switching. With four 2.5 Gbps ports, each supported at full line rate, the Cisco Four-port c/stm-16c POS Line Card achieves a full 10 Gbps throughput, which translates to more than 25 percent greater performance on a per slot basis than any competitive offering. Both quality of service (QoS) and accounting features may be enabled without impacting performance. The Cisco Four-port c/stm-16c POS Line Card offers guaranteed priority packet delivery for both IP and MPLS applications. This includes Modified Deficit Round Robin (MDRR) queuing algorithm (enabling low latency queuing for high priority applications such as voice over IP (VoIP)) and unique priority-based Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) (providing congestion control), while packet sequence integrity is not compromised under any condition. Available optics options include Short Reach (SR) 1310 nm optics for transmission distances up to 2 kilometers (km) and Long Reach (LR) 1550 nm optics for distances up to 80 km, enabling optical networks to be designed in a more cost-effective manner. 2 Figure 1 Cisco Four-port c/stm-16c POS Line Card Applications Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are currently contending with tremendous growth of traffic throughout their networks. With this demand comes the need for more efficient utilization of network resources, higher performance from network equipment, and greater simplicity in network design. The Cisco Four-port c/stm-16c POS Line Card meets these requirements and is ideal for addressing three IP network applications: Upgrading Core Speeds, Intra-POP Connectivity, and Delivering Commercial 2.5 Gbps IP Service. This line card operates in both the Cisco and Internet routers, offering system capacities of 200 Gbps and 320 Gbps, respectively. These chassis offer the largest single system switching capacities available today, and unmatched design flexibility for network cores and POPs. Upgrading Core Speeds As IP network cores are upgraded to higher optical speeds, there is a need to support higher speeds as well more interconnections. The Cisco Four-port c/ STM-16c POS Line Card provides these benefits for upgrading core networks to higher speeds: Efficient concentration of four 2.5 Gbps channels into a single 10 Gbps slot, maximizing router slot utilization. In situations where fiber optic infrastructure supporting OC-192c/STM-64c speeds is not yet available, an alternative 10 Gbps connectivity solution can be implemented by multiplexing four c/stm-16c connections over four separate fibers. Interoperates with existing SONET/SDH/Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) infrastructure, enabling eventual migration to a pure IP+Optical network. The option for service providers to light their own dark fiber and bypass the cost of leasing fibers. This can eliminate the need for front-ending data equipment with the traditional intermediate SONET platforms, reducing network capital cost and management expense. Enhances route diversity by supporting Automatic Protection Switching/Multiplex Section Protection (APS/MSP). The APS feature is available to provide protection against line card failure, fiber cut, or excessive bit error rates. 3 Intra-POP Connectivity Many service providers have adopted POS for intra-pop connectivity to achieve the highest possible interconnection speeds. The Cisco Four-port c/ STM-16c POS Line Card interface module enables aggregation of multiple c/stm-16c interconnects into one 10 Gbps slot, leading to more efficient use of router density within a POP architecture. 5 Key Features and Benefits The Cisco Four-port c/stm-16c POS Line Card concentrates four 2.5 Gbps ports in one line card. This increases density per rack and overall router capacity, enabling service providers to scale networks cost-effectively. Full line rate throughput for IP forwarding and MPLS switching with a dedicated 25 Mpps Layer 3 application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) that ensures sustainable performance for IP services required today and new services being developed. Service providers can scale their networks to deliver high performance IP services with a minimum of investment. Guaranteed Priority Packet Delivery. Cisco s QoS support for IP and MPLS provides for efficient, predictable control of network connections and reduces the cost of network operations by maximizing bandwidth utilization without impacting performance. QoS also ensures the highest available bandwidth with minimum delays required by time-sensitive applications such as voice over IP and multimedia, enabling service providers to grow revenue by offering advanced differentiated IP services. Comprehensive MPLS capabilities support the development of service-optimized networks and can accelerate migration from circuit-based networks to packet-based networks, creating new market opportunities for service providers. Options for both LR and SR optics maximize interconnect flexibility in deploying fiber upgrades. Network expansion can be done more cost-effectively.
