3 Background of EON New application / Large traffic High-rate applications, such as VoD, HD-TV, cloud computing, grid applications Bandwidth-consuming and highly dynamic Dynamic reconfigurations Fixed grids is short of the adaptability for the connection bandwidth variation High speed transmission 100G and beyond/super-channel Multi-carrier modulation / OFDM Cost-effective, scalable networking Flexible-grid network (EON) is regarded as a promising candidate for future transport infrastructure. 3
