10 Data Sources and Technical Notes Demographics Source: 2010 population figures are based on U. S. Bureau of the Census data. Abuse and Neglect Source: CONNECTIONS Number of Abuse/Neglect Investigations is the total number of abuse/neglect investigations conducted by ACS in CY This count excludes reports which have been consolidated into one investigation according to criteria established by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Abuse/Neglect Indication rate is the percent of reports that have credible evidence of abuse or neglect determined upon investigation. Victimization Rate is the number of distinct children 17 and under with indicated reports divided by the number of children 17 and under in the population (NYC/Borough/CD) multiplied by 1,000. Individual cases of abuse/neglect frequently include several allegations of child maltreatment. Therefore, the total number of allegations will exceed the total number of theirrespective cases. Repeat Indicated Investigations in Six Months is the percent of children with indicated investigations closed during 2012 who were in another indicated investigation within six months. Foster Care Population Source: CCRS/WMS and CONNECTIONS The data represent children in care at a point in time in March Kinship Placement is placement provided by a relative up to the third degree. Foster Care Stay Source: CCRS/WMS Children with One or More Transfers During Current Foster Care Stay is based on the number of children in care at least a day during CY Placements Source: CCRS/WMS and CONNECTIONS Placement information is based on admissions to foster care in CY Placement Rate is the number of children 17 years of age and under placed into foster care divided by the number of children 17 and under in the population (NYC/Borough/CD)multiplied by 1,000. Community Placement is the percentage of children who were placed in their community district of origin or a neighboring community district. Adolescents Placed in Family Settings is the percent of youth 12 or older placed in kinship or non relative foster boarding homes. The Percent Sibling Groups Placed Together is the percent of all placements involving children in sibling groups who were placed in family foster care (relative or non-relative) on the same day with no other siblings already in care where all siblings were placed in the same home. Kinship Placement is placement provided by a relative up to the third degree.

11 Data Sources and Technical Notes Additional Outcomes Source: CCRS/WMS Discharge information is based on children discharged from foster care in CY Percent Reunified within 1 Year of Placement is based on children admitted to foster care in CY The Re-entry Rate is the percent of children discharged from foster care to families in CY 2012 who re-enter foster care within one year of their discharge date. Early Care and Education Source: ACS Division of Early Care and Education Data includes active Early Care and Education cases as of April Preventive Services Source: PROMIS Data is based on families receiving preventive services as of March The Other Referral Sources category includes Department of Homeless Services, Juvenile Justice Initiative, Foster Care Agency, Hospital/Medical Facility, NYC Housing Authority, Police, Probation, PPRS Transfer, Residential Care (IPAS-CW), Family Court, Residential Care, Sponsor Agency, FAP, HRA/INFO, Foster Care Re-Entry and School. Youth and Family Justice Source: CJIS Detention admissions are unique youth admitted during the year. If a youth was admitted more than once during the year, he or she was only counted once. NSP Source: CCRS/WMS and CONNECTIONS Non-secure placement information is based on admissions to non-secure placement in CY 2013.
