4 2015 Q3 - Quarterly Flash Report Turbulent Markets While saving for retirement, most investors will often experience major and minor fluctuations in their retirement account value. And even during retirement years, investors will also likely continue to experience turbulent markets. Market Cycles Helpful Tips: Don t Panic: Sharp market declines of 5% to 25% are common and normal for long-term investors. Don t over focus about what you hear on the news. The more often you update yourself on the market s fluctuations, the more volatile and risky it will appear to you. Wall Street Journal 1. The past few years have been very mild in terms of market corrections compared to long-term history. Remember to think long-term about your retirement savings. Keep Saving: Saving consistently each payroll allows you to take advantage of dollar cost averaging, buying more shares when prices are low and fewer when prices are high. Prices are generally lower when the market corrects downward and provides a great opportunity to buy shares on sale. The changes in market value and price occur on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. The chart to the left shows that inside the longer market cycles, there are typically many smaller rise and falls in the market on a short-term and intermediate basis. While the daily changes in the market can be unsettling, it is important to remember the basics. Keep in mind your time horizon, risk tolerance, and diversification. Stay Diversified: Spreading your investments among a variety of funds, may help you manage your risk level. To review your investment options and make sure you are properly diversified, contact a Soltis Advisor to review your account. Nobody Knows What Will Happen Tomorrow: Markets could go up one day, down the next or stay flat. Nobody has a crystal ball to know what the market will do next in the short-term. Over the longterm, markets can provide increasing and lasting value, but it is important to remember diversification and patience are fundamental. 4
