Presentation of the Inserm Liliane Bettencourt School
General presentation The Inserm School was founded in It offers fast-track track research training for students from across France who have a strong interest in scientific research. Starting in the second year of study in medicine or pharmacy, it allows to obtain an early Master degree and later provides the possibility to obtain an MD- degree. In 2007, it was renamed the Inserm Liliane Bettencourt School thanks to funding from the Fondation Bettencourt Schueller for paying student fellowships.
Objective of the training offered by the Inserm Liliane Bettencourt School The program is designed to provide the opportunity to second year students of medicine and pharmacy to complement their clinical studies with a program preparing them for biological and medical research. It leads to a Master 2 degree, and subsequently to a Ph.D. The Master 2 degree must be prepared early in the curriculum, namely before the 4th year of the medical school, and after either the 3rd or 4th year of the pharmacy school. The Ph.D can be prepared either immediately after the Master 2, or later in the curriculum. The ultimate objective of this joint honors course is to enable future physicians and pharmacists to combine their clinical practice with research activity.

How can you enroll in the Inserm Liliane Bettencourt School? Each French Faculty presents a list of students to be included in the School s initial selection. The selection committee asks Deans to examine applications upstream. Deans can hold interviews with students, to best assess their motivation and their ability to contribute to and profit from a course that requires a great deal of personal work. Application-based selection, open to students from across France (~ 50 applications selected) CV cover letter transcript of high school grades and specific honors transcript of grades and rank at the entrance examination of the 2 nd year of medical studies analysis of a recent scientific article The students selected then take part in the 2-week Ecole de février (see pages 10 and 11 for a more detailed description of this course)
The Ecole de Février 66 hours of classes 14 full days of training-motivation in residence at the Sèvres International Centre of Educational Studies (CIEP). Mathematical tools applied to biology and medicine 14 hours Physics 19 hours Chemistry 19 and a half hours Biology 14 hours 6 hours of analysis of scientific articles 24 hours of exchanges with teachers 6 conferences given by renowned researchers, capable of inciting enthusiasm in research

A few detection and decision-making mechanisms in cell biology Chemistry 1. Glycolysis and the respiratory chain. Chemical, physiological and pathological aspects 2. Chemical reactivity in a biological environment 3. Cytochromes P450 Biology Genomes and diseases: contribution of model systems 1. C.elegans 2. Drosophila 3. Statistical modeling: the likelihood principle and applications in biology and medicine 3. Introduction to analysis of data from micro-array techniques
Entrance examination for the Inserm Liliane Bettencourt School The entrance examination is taken every year in June. It is based on two oral exams based on the analysis of documents 1 in biology (compulsory) 1 in either physics, chemistry or mathematical tools (the choice of field is made by the student). This exam is based on material taught in the Ecole de février completed by preparatory documents received 2 months in advance. Assessment focuses on the ability of applicants to use their knowledge in a research-oriented way. Following these exams, about twenty students are selected, the exact number depending on the level of applicants. These students will then be followed up by the whole teaching and administrative team which will help them find the laboratories where they will be initiated to research, and provide financial support.
The first 3 years lead to the obtention of a Master degree 1 st year - (in parallel with the 2 nd year of medical or pharmacy studies) Ecole de Février (14 days), Master 1 teaching unit (TU) and entrance examination for the Inserm School 2 nd year 2 nd year - (in parallel with the 3 rd year of medical or pharmacy studies) Master 1 TU, 6 months (or 2 x 3 months) full-time in a research laboratory (Inserm Aviesan). Presentation of the results obtained. 3 rd year - (interruption of the medical or pharmacy curriculum) Master 2 (required for continuing in the School s program).
Enrollment in a Master 2 requires 60 ECTS Medical students not belonging to the Inserm School usually only satisfy to these requirements after their sixth year of Medical School 18 ECTS - validation of Master 1 teaching units (equivalent to 2 former MSBM (Master of Biological and Medical Sciences) certificates) 12 ECTS - validation of 2 months of laboratory work completed in Master 1 (2 x 6 ECTS) 30 ECTS - validation of the sixth year of medical studies Medical students of the Inserm School can satisfy to these requirements after their third year of Medical School 6 ECTS - validation of the 2-week Ecole de Février course and passing of the June entrance examination 18 ECTS - validation of Master 1 teaching units in choice 36 ECTS - validation of the 6-month researchperiod in the 3rd year (6 x 6 ECTS) Universities are responsible for assessing the number of ECTS required for enrolling in a Master 2 (or 60 ECTS of Master 1). The proposal above, which corresponds to the procedure adopted by several universities, is given by way of example.
The post-master Scientific Sessions A 2- or 3-day meeting attended by 4th to 6th year medical students, doctoral students preparing a and interns. Devoted to a major medical theme chosen by the students, this meeting consists of conferences given by researchers in various disciplines and presentations by the School s students. It provides an opportunity for exchanges between speakers and students of the Inserm School.
The Scientific Sessions of September Objective: bring together all of the School s students and welcome newly selected applicants. The students present the research findings that they have obtained in the successive phases of the curriculum 6-month initial laboratory experience Preparation of a Master 2 Preparation of a Participation in research while an intern or extern Research performed during residency, etc. Presentations are made both orally in a plenary session and by posters.
