3 3 Excerpts Once upon a time there was a Treble Clef. With its well-made, curved body, it was the conductor of the musical stave. The notes would lose the tone if it didn t appear before them to guide them. Therefore, they envied it. On top of that, they, the notes, were as round as balls, while the Clef was elegant and sophisticated, as if it had been designed by the most demanding of artists. To say the truth, it wasn t very friendly either. It was aware of its authority and did not make it easy for its colleagues. Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La and Si were already positioned in their spaces and lines, in that very order, as the Treble Clef had ordered, but no sound came out of them Start, Do! Then comes Re and then me, shouted Mi from the first line, looking at the notes in the spaces below. I can t. I open my mouth and nothing comes out Si, which, as always, occupied the third line of the stave, being the highest note, had been observing its colleagues for some time. 5 5 About the author Marlene Silva was born 32 years ago in Espinho. She was a journalist at the now-defunct newspaper O Comércio do Porto, and is currently a freelance copywriter. She was encouraged to take up writing by Raquel Balsa, illustrator of the collection À conta. Her greatest dream is to write for children on a regular basis.
