1 A PROGRAM OF HOLSTON CONFERENCE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN 41st ANNUAL SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCE APRIL 25-26, 2015 Rev. Amy Rollins Probst was appointed Lead Pastor of First Farragut United Methodist Church in June, Previously, she served as pastor at Broadway, Dunlap, East Ridge, and the Sunbright Circuit (Sunbright, Mount Vernon and Rugby Road) United Methodist churches in the Holston Conference. Amy received her Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity in She graduated from Marshall University in 1994 with a BA in psychology and German. While at Marshall, Amy was a distinguished Yeager Scholar and studied at Oxford University for a summer and in Germany for a semester. She grew up at First United Methodist Church in Bristol, TN, where her parents and her brother and his family continue to live and worship. Amy and her husband Chris enjoy a never-boring life with their three daughters: Anna Grace (born in 2004), and twins Callie and Cassie (born in 2008). Their mischievous pups, Bella Bigfoot and Molly, fill out the family. Amy s heart and spirit are in love with the church, and she is convinced that its future lies in recovering the understanding that the church exists to spread good news to the people who aren t here yet. Our United Methodist vision is to make disciples for the transformation of the world. Amy s desire is that together we receive the many gifts God showers upon us with joy and purpose, so that we can live and share our Christian love and grace, in witness to Jesus Christ, with a world that knows much darkness. 91 N. The Prayer Labyrinth at Lake Junaluska Many of you have probably been to Lake Junaluska a number of times over the years, and I m wondering if you ve ever noticed one particular feature of the landscape: the prayer labyrinth. This path is cut into the grass on the lawn beside Memorial Chapel on the side away from Stuart Auditorium. Maybe you walked right past it or over it without noticing, maybe you saw it but didn t understand its use. Whether you have used this path or not, or if this is your first time at Junaluska, I encourage you to look for the labyrinth and use it. A prayer labyrinth provides a spiritual discipline that can enrich your prayer life and bring you closer to God. A labyrinth is not a maze. It is a single path that wraps around itself, symbolizing a journey from the outside world toward God and then back into the world after coming closer to the Creator. The use of these labyrinths is an ancient spiritual practice used in many faith traditions. In medieval Europe there were often such paths inside cathedrals or on the grounds of churches. Do not rush as you walk through the labyrinth. Take all the time you need. Pause when you feel inclined to do that. If you encounter another person, simply step around them or step aside so that the other person can pass you. There are three parts to your journey. As you enter the labyrinth, you begin your inward journey. You are encouraged to let go of all that is keeping you from being close to God. Shed your worries and anxieties and focus your thoughts on our Creator. The center of the labyrinth symbolizes union with God. When you reach this place, stop, reflect on your relationship with God and be aware of God s presence. The final step is the outward journey when you retrace your steps and return to the entrance. As you leave the labyrinth, you walk back into everyday life refreshed and closer to your Lord. 3
