1 Important notice: LOCAL INCENTIVES SUPPORTING NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION IN COLORADO This page reflects the most recent information made available by school districts and hiring agencies in Colorado. All 179 districts and 21 BOCES were surveyed in March 2012 to complete this updated chart. (Approximately 1/3 of the 200, mostly smaller districts, were not reached.) National Board Certified Teachers are recognized by approximately 18% of Colorado districts through some form of help or compensation. Incentives are offered at the discretion of the individual local agencies or contracts and are subject to change and availability of funding. The Colorado Department of Education is not responsible for changes to the information listed below, or the lack of funding for a support item due to local budget cuts. School District County Candidate Fee Support Other Support Incentives for NBCTs Academy 20 El Paso Allows credits to be used for salary increment placement on the salary schedule Adams 12 Five Star Schools Adams Arapahoe 28J (Aurora) Adams A one time $3,000 stipend and an additional ongoing 2% of base salary, as long as national board certification is maintained. Arapahoe The teacher receives a one time stipend of $2,300 upon becoming certified or recertified. The district also pays an additional $1,000 annually to each teacher holding the national certification. Akron R 1 Washington $500 annual allowance which can be used to pay for certification or fees for classes. Aspen 1 Pitkin Can earn an approximate $1,300 increase based up on educational credits for work involved. This is based upon the district being able to award the increases in a given year.
2 Boulder Valley RE 2 Boulder The District leads candidates with a candidate instruction course from Sept to NBCTs get a 5% stipend as long as the certificate is valid. The district also offers tuition reimbursement to those who take courses through accredited institutions. March to support and guide candidates. It also pairs each candidate with a BVSD NBCT mentor to help with the certification process. Branson Reorganized 82 Las Animas If requested. Briggsdale RE 10 Weld Would support funding. Would support time off. Brighton 27J Adams One time stipend of $1,500 upon certification. Cherry Creek 5 Teachers receive a 5% salary increase upon becoming certified and receive it for the life of the certificate. It can be continued if they re certify. Cheyenne Mountain 12 El Paso District reimburses candidates their $565 fee upon completion of certification. District will also pay NBPTS balance not covered by scholarships for each candidate, and then takes it out of payroll in monthly increments. Colorado Springs 11 El Paso District reimburses candidates their $565 fee Four professional days to work on certification. Candidates can receive credit for support classes to earn district in service credit for salary advancement. District will pay fee for candidates to attend class in District 11 ($50). The district purchased video cameras to help with preparation. Four professional days to work on certification. Candidates are presented to School Board and given a gift at a school board meeting. The District is currently setting up its own cohort support class for next cycle. NBCTs can earn stipends for being mentors of new candidates and can be paid extra to teach weekend classes for supporting new candidates. The district is looking into additions to the salary scale for those who become NBCTs but these are not final yet. The district has a televised recognition ceremony in January. The District School
3 upon completion of certification. For teachers retaking assessments, the district reimburses $365. For Take One candidates, the district reimburses the $395 fee. Custer County C 1 Custer $300 toward certification fee. Denver County 1 (DPS) Denver The District supports up to 5 candidates with a grant of $1,000 each. The Association will support up to 5 candidates (who are Association members) with $500 each. (From contract.) Candidates can pay tuition for support classes to earn district in service credit for salary advancement. (Supplies, materials and class books are provided.) NBCT Staff help give feedback for candidate entries and mentor candidates. One time $3,000 stipend for those who complete the process but are not yet certified. Board recognizes the NBCTs at the January Board Meeting. Other teachers from the region are encouraged to participate in the support classes and other NBCTs may be offered spots in the district to support candidates and provide leadership classes. One time $2,500 stipend upon certification and a 5% salary adjustment based on current placement on the certified schedule for NBCTs in Custer County, paid annually. Teachers who obtain National Board Certification and continue to hold valid certification will be placed on the next higher education column. A teacher in the doctorate column shall receive and additional 7% increase to his/her annual salary. Douglas County RE 1 Douglas District formerly paid $2,500 per yr for 5 years, as a stipend for NBCTs. That program had to be suspended, although those who obtained certification before 7/1/2010, will continuously receive it for the 5 year period. Eads RE 1 Kiowa Teachers can sell unused sick leave back to the district to fund certification fees or tuition.
4 Eagle County RE 50 Eagle Upon certification, teacher receives a $2,500 stipend (based on FTE), which is paid over 12 months. East Grand 2 Grand Annual stipend of $2,000 paid in June, for the life of certificate, which can be extended if candidate re certifies. Englewood 1 Arapahoe Would need to review if there were candidates seeking certification. Falcon 49 El Paso The district provides a $2,000 stipend which is pro rated depending upon when the teacher receives their NBCT certificate. This stipend is annual. Harrison 2 El Paso Teachers are paid on the Effectiveness and Results pay for performance scale. To obtain the Master level, which pays $90,000, the teacher must has to be Exemplary II for at least 2 years and either obtain NBCT certification or work in another district as a teacher on loan to a low performing student achievement school for at least one semester. Jefferson County R 1 Jefferson Adds 3.5 to base salary (About $1,100 each year). Littleton 6 Arapahoe A $2,000 stipend annually as long as certification is current. Manitou Springs 14 El Paso Leave time would be a possibility under professional leave days. Mapleton 1 Adams Incentives determined upon NBCT Certification, on a case by case basis. Mesa County Valley 51 Mesa Discontinued due to budget Discontinued due to budget An annual stipend of $1,644, approximately 5% of the lowest range and step on the teacher s salary schedule. Teachers receive
5 it annually as long as their certification is valid and they are in a teaching (TOSA) position. Norwood R 2J San Miguel Provides release days for portfolio preparation. Platte Canyon 1 District is discussing a 1 step pay bump for obtaining national board certification, but this is dependent upon on budget talks and is subject to availability of funding. Ridgway R 2 Ouray Possibly $200 per year, per person for professional development. Sheridan 2 Arapahoe Annual stipend of $1,500 while certified, as long as hold certificate. St. Vrain Valley RE 1J Boulder A teacher can use some of their PTO allocation for the year. Summit RE 1 Summit A one time, $5,000 stipend upon completion of certification. Telluride R 1 San Miguel Up to $750 of application fee. 3 NBCT days with pay A $2,500 stipend in the year that the NBCT Certification is earned and an additional 5% of the base salary from the teacher salary matrix for each year certification is current. Thompson R2 J Larimer A $500 stipend payable in September of each year. Weld County RE 1 Weld A $500 stipend paid annually to the teacher once certification is achieved. Weld County RE 8 Weld Can use tuition reimbursement of up to $1,500 per year, up to a maximum of $4,500.
