2 2009 SEC Gymnastics Week 2 NOTES TEAM BY TEAM NOTES AROUND THE SEC ALABAMA Crimson Tide The Alabama Gymnastics team opened its 2009 home slate Friday night by beating Kentucky Friday night in front of 10,021 fans. Alabama is 30-1 in home openers under Sarah and David Patterson and are now 54-0 against the Wildcats. Freshman Ashley Priess won the uneven bars with a 9.925, the second highest score in the nation so far this season. She also won the balance beam to give her three individual titles this season. Junior Morgan Dennis also has three individual titles this year after winning the vault and floor exercise against Kentucky. Junior Ricki Lebegern won her first all-around title of the year with a season-high After scoring matching s in the season s first two meets, Alabama is ranked No. 1 in the nation on the balance beam. ARKANSAS Lady Razorbacks The eighth-ranked University of Arkansas gymnastics team scored a season-best in a road meet at No. 9 Oregon State Friday. Junior Casey Jo Magee won the all-around title, her second of the season, scoring a Magee tallied a pair of season-bests and a career-best 9.90 on the floor excise en route to the win. Junior Michelle Stout tied for the vault win with a 9.90 her second vault title of the year as well. Freshman Jaime Pisani continued to improve with career-bests in four of the five events. O Connell Center crowd of 4,771...Florida used the nation s top floor total of the 2009 season (49.45) to erase the deficit after the final rotation...senior Corey Hartung matched her collegiate-best on floor for the sixth time (9.95) to win the floor title...she also upped her career all-around titles number to 13 with her season-best total of junior Maranda Smith, performing in her first competitive vault lineup since her freshman year at UCLA in 2006, won that event title with a collegiate-best junior All-American Melanie Sinclair shared her second consecutive uneven bars title with Hartung and sophomore Alicia Goodwin at the win was the first for Goodwin. GEORGIA Gym Dogs Georgia capped a busy few days on Monday by knocking off Utah at Stegeman Colisuem. Tied after three rotations, the Gym Dogs emerged with a victory over the Utes. On Friday, Georgia posted a win at LSU. In between on Sunday, Georgia hosted the inaugural Stilleto Race, featuring relay races with the participants in various sizes of high heels. The proceeds from the race and the Pink-Out meet against Utah will be donated to the Athens Regional Medical Center's Breast Health Center.... Senior Courtney Kupets improved to 3-0 in all-around competitions by sweeping each against LSU and Utah.... Georgia will entertain Alabama on Friday in a key SEC meet. KENTUCKY Gym Kats The Kentucky gymnastics team (1-1, 0-1 SEC) was topped by the No. 6 Alabama (2-0, 2-0 SEC) Friday night in Coleman Coliseum. Bama outscored the Cats, , in front of a packed house. Sophomore Andrea Mitchell started the meet for Kentucky on the uneven bars with a season-high Freshmen Whitney Rose and Storey Morris each rebounded from their first meet vs. Utah State for solid scores of and 9.650, respectively. For the second consecutive meet senior Natalie Rubinstein took team top-honors with a 9.850, taking the Cats score to an improved , just above Alabama s Rubinstein placed second behind the Crimson Tide s Ashley Priess who scored a career-high The Frisco, Texas, native Rose, made her balance beam debut with a solid Senior Heather Hite landed a 9.875, tying with Alabama s Geralen Stack-Eaton and Priess for the event title. LSU Tigers LSU jumped three spots in the rankings to No. 11 as the Tigers improved their season average despite falling to Georgia, With the loss LSU fell to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the SEC. Despite the loss, the Tigers posted a season-high as well as season highs in three of the four events as LSU recorded a on bars, on beam and on floor. LSU remained the nation s second-ranked vaulting team with a average. The Tigers are also in the top 10 in the floor exercise at No. 9 with a average. LSU will travel to face Kentucky Friday at 6 p.m. CST. ALL SEC TEAMS RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION The Southeastern Conference continues to prove itself as the nation s leading Gymnastics conference. Each of the practicing seven SEC gymnastic teams found themselves ranked in the Top 25 in the preseason poll. Florida currently ranks No.1 in the nation.
