1 SUMMARY OF SCHOOL ALLOCATION MEMORANDUM NO. 56, FY08 DESIGN YOUR OWN (DYO) PERIODIC ASSESSMENT ALLOCATIONS Summary The Design Your Own (DYO) assessment initiative is geared toward assisting schools in developing and using their own assessment techniques and tools to achieve the educational objectives of the Periodic Assessment Program. Purpose DYO allows schools to develop their own assessments or build on existing school-specific assessments, including qualitative, portfolio, and rubric-based assessments. This opportunity aligns well with the Department of Education s new accountability reforms, including the increasing principal autonomy embedded in the most recent Children First initiatives. Restrictions on Funds Funds are specifically targeted toward the schools design, implementation, interpretation, and communication of assessments and results. Further, the allocation is conditioned on schools complying, whenever applicable, with the requirements set forth in the Office of Accountability s DYO application. KLEIN, Chancellor OFFICE OF THE CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER 52 Chambers Street, New York, NY SCHOOL ALLOCATION MEMORANDUM NO. 56, FY08 DATE: September 05, 2007 TO: FROM: COMMUNITY SUPERINTENDENTS, INTEGRATED SERVICE CENTERS and SCHOOL PRINCIPALS Susan Olds, Executive Budget Director SUBJECT: DESIGN YOUR OWN (DYO) PERIODIC ASSESSMENT ALLOCATIONS Through the Design Your Own assessment initiative (DYO), the Department of Education (DOE) is providing funding to schools across School Support Organizations to support innovative assessment activities. The initiative assists schools in developing and using their own assessment techniques and tools to achieve the educational objectives of the Office of Accountability s Periodic Assessment Program. Design Your Own Assessments The opportunity for schools to design their own assessments aligns well with the DOE s new accountability program, the selections all schools made among Periodic Assessment options and the increased autonomy for principals and schools under the Children First reforms. DYO allows schools to develop their own assessments or build on existing school-specific assessments, including qualitative, portfolio, and rubric-based assessments. All DOE schools, grades K-12, were eligible to apply to use DYO assessments for all of their periodic assessments or to use DYO assessments in combination with DOE-provided periodic assessments. One hundred and forty-nine schools are approved to receive DYO funding either to design their own assessments or to renew their DYO authorization from the school year, when the initiative was piloted with one hundred and two Empowerment Schools. Schools receiving funding went through an intensive application process. Funds are specifically targeted toward the schools design, implementation, interpretation, and communication of assessments and results. The allocation is conditioned on schools complying, whenever applicable, with the requirements set forth in the Office of Accountability s DYO application. The attached table displays the allocation for each school that was selected for the DYO initiative. Funds should be scheduled in the allocation category TL DYO Assessment and TL DYO Assessment CW.
