5 South Carolina Legal Residency Certification form (page 25). Homeschooled students: Please complete the Homeschool Supplement form (page 18). Place all materials in an envelope, attach postage, and mail. Audition Portfolio Work Applicant must bring the following to the audition for the interview: l A bound sketchbook (no loose pages) containing 20 or more drawings done from direct observation in the past 12 months. l One of the following two options best demonstrating the applicant s artistic skills: 1. A two-dimensional piece 2. A three-dimensional piece Portfolio works will be returned at the end of the audition interview. Drawing Workshop Applicants will draw a still life and be instructed by Governor s School Visual Arts faculty. The drawing workshop will also include a review of visual arts terminology. Workshop materials will be provided. Interview Applicants will be expected to discuss their work and goals in the arts. Note: We strongly recommend that all Visual Arts applicants read the Application and Audition Tips below when preparing their application and accompanying works. Application and Audition Tips Overall Process and Send-In Portfolio Keep in mind that, given the nature of the projects in the summer programs, we are more interested in students who are highly teachable as opposed to students who simply draw at a very high level. l Overview of the application process: First, send both the unrelated objects drawing and the collage to the Office of Admissions prior to the audition. Remember to write your name on the back of each piece! Arrive at the audition with your sketchbook and a piece of choice. You will participate in a drawing workshop in which you will be instructed by Visual Arts faculty. After the workshop, you will be interviewed individually by faculty members. In this interview, you will have an opportunity to talk about your artistic experiences and interests and to ask any questions you may have about the program. l Drawing of two unrelated objects: This drawing is intended to give us a sense of your drawing ability and also offers an opportunity to examine your idea of what unrelated means. This piece must be drawn from direct observation (observed first-hand) and not copied from another visual resource. Do not work from a photograph, from memory, or from imagination. Be attentive to how the selected objects are unrelated. Avoid drawing objects which at first seem unrelated but actually have a strong common connection a hat and a shoe might be different objects, but they are both protective garments. Therefore, a shoe and a pencil sharpener (as an example) might be a better choice. l Text-and-Image Collage: This piece should represent something you read about or learned in school. On the back of the collage, briefly write about how it relates to what you read or learned. Preparing for the Audition l Required pieces: Bring your sketchbook and one selected work (different from your send-in portfolio) for your scheduled audition. Only bring the work we require, keeping in mind that more complex works are not always the most successful. Both items are needed for the audition interview; be prepared to talk about the formal qualities of your work (such as positive/negative relationships, texture, balance) SCGSAH Application Visual Arts 5

6 l Your selected work: Take care in your selection of the two-dimensional or three-dimensional piece you bring to your audition. Two-dimensional pieces can be of any size and medium. Three-dimensional work may be small or large in scale and of any materials as long as it is easily transported to the audition. Make this selection based on your strengths: if you feel more successful making a two-dimensional piece, then bring in a two-dimensional piece for your interview and be prepared to discuss your choice. l Your sketchbook: The sketchbook is not a portfolio of finished and highly refined work. Instead, the sketchbook component is intended to demonstrate a student s interest in art and art ideas as evidenced in the drawings, images, and ideas collected inside. Twenty full-page drawings is the minimum. l The workshop: The drawing workshop is conducted by department faculty or guest faculty members at the audition. It is a two-part exercise, consisting of a review and discussion of the principles of design followed by a drawing segment led by faculty members in the room. l The interview: Perhaps the most stressful part of the audition is the interview. The main word of advice here is, Don t panic. Our intent in the interview is to consider the whole student and to give you a chance to both speak with faculty in the program and convey your specific interests in our school. Interviews also help our instructors determine an applicant s commitment to arts training. Interviewers may ask questions about how a student feels he or she will fit into the learning environment of the Governor s School. Be prepared to talk about your own artistic experiences, interests, and aspirations in the arts. Your interview is also a good opportunity to ask questions about any aspect of the program. In preparing, we recommend that applicants look carefully through the school website ( before the audition as a way of developing these questions. 13 Interview Each applicant will be expected to discuss the following: l His/her work l The work of the artists he/she researched l His/her aspirations in the arts Note: We strongly recommend that all applicants visit our Audition and Application Tips page at the official SCGSAH website ( From the main page, select Apply from the Admissions dropdown, then click on High School Requirements. Scroll down to Visual Arts Requirements; our Tips are available on a separate page as linked at the end of the Audition & Tips section. Application and Audition Tips Overview Send in your application along with your color-based composition, your black squares design composition, and your unrelated objects drawing. Once your application is complete, the Office of Admissions will mail you workshop and interview times for one of our audition sites. Arrive at your audition on time for the drawing workshop where you will be instructed and observed by Visual Arts department faculty. Afterwards, you will need your artist research and interview portfolio (sketchbook, selfportrait, 3-D piece, and additional piece of choice) for your interview with a faculty panel. Be prepared to discuss the pieces and artists researched! This will also be an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the program. Application The first step in making an application to the High School Program is to send in the three required pieces prior to the audition. All send-in pieces should all be 8.5 in. x 11 in. in size and have your name on the back. Please refer to the website for deadlines. l The color-based composition: The color-based composition is intended to demonstrate the applicant s familiarity with color theory. Students might consider a composition using, for example, a complementary, analogous, or monochromatic color scheme. Remember to provide the name of color theory on the back of the work. Be prepared to discuss your choice. l Four black squares on white paper: Glue four black squares of equal size on a sheet of white paper in a way that visually conveys the idea of tension. This is a classic design problem involving the use of positive and negative space; the strength of the solution is connected to the arrangement of the squares. We do not recommend drawing upon the squares, overlapping or overhanging squares, cutting the squares into other shapes, balling up the squares to make three-dimensional forms, or otherwise manipulating the squares. We are looking for a simple and concise solution. l A drawing of two unrelated objects: The drawing of two unrelated objects is intended to give us a sense of an applicant s drawing ability and also offers us an opportunity to examine the applicant s idea of what unrelated means. This piece must be drawn from direct observation (observed first-hand) and not copied from another visual resource; do not work from a photograph, from memory, or from imagination. Be attentive to how the selected objects are unrelated: Avoid drawing objects which at first seem unrelated, but actually have a strong common connection. For instance, while a hat and a shoe might be different objects, they are both protective garments, and therefore a shoe and a pencil sharpener (as an example) might be a better choice. Audition The next step is the on-site audition. To prepare for this day, we offer the following advice: Be sure to have all the required items for the audition. No materials are needed for the drawing workshop, but applicants must be ready with their research materials and interview portfolio for the interview portion of the audition. l The research component gives the applicant an opportunity to discuss artists that they find appealing from three different time periods. Be prepared to speak about why you are drawn to the artists and how their work relates to the period in which it was created. Sources for printed samples can be found from a wide range of materials. The web resources suggested in the application and requirements page serve as useful starting points for discovery and research. l Applicants should be selective and only bring the work that we require. The mandatory three-dimensional piece may be small or large in scale and of any material as long as it is easily transported to the audition. Again, simple solutions such as clay pots, small sculptures, wire sculptures, or small carvings often make very good choices for SCGSAH Application Visual Arts 13

14 this component of the audition. More complex solutions are not always more successful. Be prepared to talk about the formal qualities of the work (e.g. positive/negative relationships, texture, and balance). l Take care in selecting the additional piece of choice. This piece must fall into one of the following three options: a two-dimensional piece, a three-dimensional piece, OR a work of film or animation. Brought-in two-dimensional pieces can be of any size and medium; three-dimensional pieces again may be of any size and material conducive to transportation. Film or animation pieces must not exceed two minutes, must be in.mp4 or.mpeg file format, and must be presented on a CD, DVD, or flash drive that will be returned after the interview. Make this selection based on your strengths: if you feel more successful making a two-dimensional piece then bring in a two-dimensional piece for this part of the audition and be prepared to discuss your choice. l The self-portrait should be done in pencil. Use a mirror to see yourself; do not draw from a photograph. It should be no smaller than 8.5 x 11 and no larger than 18 x24 in size. The drawing should not float in the middle of the page; use the entire space of the page for this drawing. l The sketchbook component is intended to demonstrate the student s ongoing interest in art and art ideas as evidenced in drawings, images, and ideas collected in the sketchbook. The sketchbook is not a portfolio of finished and highly refined work but should instead show an ongoing interest in images and ideas. Twenty fullpage drawings should be considered a minimum; more work will be considered more favorably. Drawing Workshop The Drawing Workshop is conducted by Visual Arts Department faculty and generally takes place in a drawing studio. It is a two-part exercise consisting of a review and discussion of the principles of design then followed by a drawing segment in which students are instructed by faculty members in the room. We recommend that students be familiar with the following principles for the Drawing Workshop: line quality, positive and negative shape, unity, balance, rhythm, and scale. It is also important that students keep in mind that, given the nature of the curriculum in our High School Program, we are more interested in students who are highly teachable as opposed to students who draw at a very high level. Interview Perhaps the most stressful aspect of the audition is the interview component. The main word of advice here is to not panic. Our intent in the interview process is to consider the whole student, and to give the student a chance to convey their specific interests in our school. The interview also gives the student an opportunity to meet and speak with faculty in the program, and for the faculty to determine the student s commitment to arts training. Faculty may ask questions about how the student feels he or she will fit into the unique learning environment of the Governor s School as well as interests outside of art. Applicants should be prepared to talk about their artistic experience, interests, and their aspirations in the arts. The interview is also a good time for students to ask questions that they might have about any aspect of the program. As such, we recommend that applicants look carefully at the school website in advance as a way of developing these questions.
