URB STD 888 Candidate for Degree URB STD 901 Seminar: Urban Social Structure (MS Core Course) SEM 001 Frank Wilson M 4:30-7:10 PM This seminar is a comprehensive survey of topics relevant to studying in the institutional and organized relationships of people in cities. The reading, class discussions, and projects will largely examine and assess the competing theoretical perspectives of cities and urbanization, alternative methods or urban social research, and different urban policy directions. In the study of cities, social theory is focused on identifying and understanding the body of concepts, hypotheses, and perspectives which have been formulated to explain the emergence and growth of cities, the external and internal macro sociological structuring of cities, the social consequences of city life, and the social interventions and polices needed to address urban problems. URB STD 927 Urban Internship Advanced application and analysis of theory and acquired skills in supervised agency assignment. URB STD 945 The Internal Structure of the City (MS Core Course) LEC 001 Anne Bonds T 4:00-7:10 PM Urban geographers traditionally have examined both the internal and external structure of cities in order to understand urbanization. The external focus examines links among cities and the development of urban systems while the internal approach considers patterns and processes occurring within cities. In this class, our focus will be on the internal structure of cities with a concentration on urban systems and the (re)production of inequality. We will begin the course with a consideration of key theoretical approaches within urban geography. The remainder of the course will be organized around themes of particular interest to urban geographers, including neoliberal restructuring and urban governance, difference, urban poverty and
inequality, bodies and public space, and communities and contestation. Our focus will be predominantly on the North American experience. URB STD 965 Municipal Management LEC 001 Mark Swartz R 7:00-9:40 PM The purpose of this course is to review and explore the realities of managing local government in today s rapidly changing times. It is designed to provide students, especially those who are intending to make public administration a career, with an in-depth insight into the issues, challenges and demands of the environment, from all aspects. This course will examine local government from a variety of perspectives, including those of the administrator, which will be the focal point, elected officials, staff and citizens. URB STD 983 (PhD Core Course) Contemporary Urban Social Structures and Change LEC 001 Jennifer Jordan W 4:30-7:10 PM Range of research issues conceptualized in terms of major categorical and more intentional social structures that bear on urban social actions.
URB STD 987 Urban Social Control LEC 001 Joe Austin R 4:30-7:10 PM Governance (control) of the city s social order was among the foundational problematics of the social sciences and humanities disciplines in the modern era. The range of tasks under the umbrella of urban social control is daunting, including law and criminal justice, the cultural norms of behavior in almost every realm of social life, and the problematics of freedom within a competitive economic system, among others. These undertakings (both academic and in practice) have been contentious, continuous, and bloody sites of struggle, and the scars of those struggles have created some of the definitive markers of the modern (and current) era. The class is discussion-based, with student interests taking the lead. Written work consists of several discussion starters (2-3 pages, 20% of the final grade) that will be read at the beginning of our discussions, and a final project of about 20 pages, to be negotiated with Joe, worth 50% of the final grade. Class participation constitutes 30% of the final grade; participation in every discussion is expected for full credit. Five books and about 75 articles make up the readings URB STD 990 Master s Research or Thesis URB STD 991 Doctoral Research or Dissertation URB STD 998 Independent Study for Master s Students URB STD 999 Independent Study for Doctoral Students
ARCH 584 Urban Landscape Architecture (U/G) LEC 001 TBA R 6:30-9:10 PM Study of historic and contemporary exterior urban space, urban site planning methodology; design and detailing of exterior urban space; pedestrian and vehicular movement; use of plant materials. ARCH790 Practicum in Buildings Landscapes Cultures (G) Arijit Sen F 9:00-11:40 AM This course is about reading the quotidian built environment (that includes ordinary buildings, landscapes, material objects, and urban places) as cultural artifact. By focusing on the material world this course expands our methods of historical inquiry beyond the analysis of written records, texts, biographies, art, photography and folklore. Although there is a long history of cultural interpretations via the study of the material world, Buildings-Landscapes- Cultures scholars continue to search for new methods of enquiry in the field. Originally based on material culture methods this field of enquiry now adapts methods and theories from environmental history, performance studies, cultural as well as non-representational geography, urban/architectural history, landscape history and public history. BUSMGMT 721 Fundraising and Development for Nonprofit Organizations (G) LEC 001 TBA T 5:30-8:10 PM Philosophical thoughts on development; basics of fundraising; strategic planning and implementation. COMMUN 872 Rhetorics of Constituting Community and Social Controversy (G) SEM 001 Kathryn Olson W 3:30-6:10 PM Advanced theories of promoting and disrupting identification of division and social conflict through rhetoric.
Geography GEOG 742 Urban and Regional Dimensions of Global Economic Change (G) SEM 001 Linda McCarthy M 5:30-8:10 PM We are experiencing the emergence of a global economy in which cities and regions around the world are becoming more and more interdependent individual places are being tied increasingly into wider processes and patterns of international change. These processes and patterns of internationalization, however, are uneven across space and time, with important implications for the prospects of different cities and regions around the world. Regardless of if you live in a world city like New York, London, or Tokyo or a smaller city like Milwaukee, these global changes create both opportunities and challenges at a variety of scales, including for individuals, communities, businesses, and government agencies. This course examines the dynamic complexity of the global economy. It takes an interdisciplinary approach which addresses the theory and practice of disciplines including geography, political science, history, sociology, and economics, to provide a comprehensive basis for understanding globalization and the multifaceted interactions within and among the developed and less developed cities and regions of the world. Some topics examined during the semester that provide insights into the urban and regional dimensions of global economic change include: economic issues such as outsourcing, deindustrialization, and technological breakthroughs; political issues such as government responses to globalization that include offering public subsidies to transnational corporations or entering into free trade agreements like NAFTA; social and cultural issues associated with social equity and standard of living concerns; and environmental issues related to sustainable development. Geographic perspectives on urban and regional change as 'developed' and 'less developed' parts of the world become more interconnected by wider international processes of change. GEOG 905 Seminar: Selected Topics in Geography (G) Theorizing Spaces of Hegemony & Resistance SEM 001 Kristin Sziarto W 4:30-7:10 PM
This course will investigate conceptualizations of power, spatialities, and collectivities in theories of social movement and protest, with an emphasis on Marxist, post-marxist & post-structural, and postcolonial perspectives that have been influential within critical geography. This course has three aims: 1)To survey perspectives on social movements and protest, especially those that have been influential within critical geography, including (but not limited to) hegemony, radical democracy, resistance, contentious politics, and framing theory ; 2)To become acquainted with critical debates around power and spatialities within these perspectives, and their relation to theoretical terms/fields such as hegemony, alliance politics, and radical democracy ; and 3)To consider how theories of social movements, protest, and the political have their own geographies (their own conceptual maps, as well as their particular geographies of emergence), and how these shape their production, reception, and translation in activist and academic practice. To achieve these aims, we will read both recent scholarship in geographies of social movements (or contentious politics, or resistance, or.) as well as foundational texts from Gramsci, Foucault, Laclau & Mouffe, Marx, etc. Critical points of debate include the meaning and significance of class and the economy in politics; the relations between social movements and the state; understandings of social movements through the notion of representation vs. constitution, ideology vs. culture, discourse vs. framing; and ways of thinking about identity, collectivities, and agency. History HIST 404 Ad Hoc: The Crisis of the American City- Viewed Through HBO s The Wire (U/G) LEC 001 Marc Levine MW 2:30-3:15 PM HBO s The Wire is acclaimed by many critics as the finest series in the history of U.S. television. Set in the mean streets of Baltimore, The Wire combines memorable characters, riveting and often heartbreaking drama, and wry humor. The Wire may also be the most penetrating study-in books or on film-of the crisis of the contemporary American city. This course will examine the urban crisis through the lens of The Wire, exploring such issues as urban poverty, drugs, and inner city neighborhoods, shrinking economic opportunity, the follies of political leaders, and the failures of urban institutions such as the schools, police, and media. The course will include viewings and discussion of The Wire, selected readings on the urban crisis, and occasional guest lecturers from experts in the areas of urban life highlighted by The Wire.
HIST 715 Research Methods in Local History (G) SEM 001 Michael Gordon R 4:00-6:40 PM Seminar on history and methodology of studying small towns, rural areas, cities, and neighborhoods in the United States. HIST 833 Colloquium on Urban History (G) Perspectives on Milwaukee s Past SEM 001 Margo Anderson M 7:00-9:40 PM The course will use Milwaukee as a site to explore urban history in general, and the history of the city and metropolitan region in particular. We will examine the existing historical literature on Milwaukee, evaluate it in terms of what is known about other Midwestern cities and perhaps some comparisons farther afield, and consider the kinds of research and scholarship that might be developed further using Milwaukee as a research site. We will also explore archival resources for conducting research in Milwaukee. The course should be useful for students searching for thesis topics using near at hand resources.
