Solutions for the HPE Converged Infrastructure The Instant-On Enterprise Less than one hundred years ago telegraphers tapped out sparsely worded messages, and waited hours listening to the hum of their ham radios for a reply. The world is getting smaller, they said and they were correct. But today in a world where a person can board a plane in Bejing Capital International Airport and 12.5 hours later find themselves in Los Angeles, it s becoming increasingly obvious how technology is affecting the way we live our lives and run our businesses. Our global culture is becoming more mobile, interactive, and consumers constantly demand more of their needs be met and at a quicker pace. Online services now need to be immediately available, anytime, anywhere, and through any device with internet capabilities. It is expected that in the next decade, two trillion devices will be used online by five billion people. In this age of instant expectations, an enterprise must be agile by responding quickly and effectively to changes in its business needs. It must accelerate its time to deployment of new procedures, new products, and new marketing initiatives, and it must address these changes while continually reducing its IT costs. These are the characteristics of an Instant-On Enterprise. It streamlines everything that is required to deliver a service. In a time of rapid even hourly change in how goods and services are delivered, the enterprise must continually adapt and reinvent its business in order to survive and prosper. The Converged Infrastructure HPE Converged Infrastructure HPE s Converged Infrastructure is fundamental to the Instant-On Enterprise. Information processing services must be easily reconfigurable and reassignable to meet rapidly changing capacity demands as workloads vary and as new applications are added. Converged Infrastructure is HPE s blueprint for organizing IT assets to support the Instant-On Enterprise. It supports the on-demand provisioning of IT services by integrating servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling into shared pools of virtualized interoperable resources. Resource management is automated through a common management platform. The result is the support of any workload from anywhere at anytime in order to maximize business results. Design Principles Converged Infrastructure is built upon five design principles: Virtualization All resources are virtualized, whether they are servers, storage, or networking. Virtualization separates applications, data, and network connections from the underlying hardware, making it possible to reallocate resources quickly to match the changing demands of the enterprise s data processing needs. Page 4 of 17

Resiliency A Converged Infrastructure is host to many mission-critical applications. It must provide high availability, requiring recovery from any fault within minutes, or even continuous availability, requiring recovery in seconds, while protecting data, the enterprise s most important asset. Open The infrastructure supports standard architectures and management facilities, which allows the enterprise to leverage its existing IT investments as it adopts new technologies at its own pace to support and optimize its applications. Orchestrated Service levels are managed through automated workflows, provisioning, and change management. Applications can be scaled up or down based on the business needs. Orchestration also provides central management of all resources, including functions ranging from monitoring to consumption billing. Modular Converged Infrastructure uses technologies engineered for convergence, which allows new technologies to be integrated with existing assets without having to re-engineer the data center. The CI approach gives the enterprise the ability to scale existing services and to add new capabilities across the data center, from x86 servers to systems. CI s Focus Converged Infrastructure is the ideal approach for enabling cloud computing, for protecting mission-critical applications, for consolidating diverse assets through virtualization, and for upgrading or integrating applications. It is an infrastructure that can thereby enable agile and rapid application and service delivery while driving out costs. The CI-Ready Data Replication Engine replication is certified CI-ready. Its role is to maintain an up-to-date copy of an active source database on a target system. It does so by tracking changes made to the source database and by immediately, in real time, sending changes to the target system for applying to a target database or for integrating into another business application. Used in a data center infrastructure, replication directly supports many of the goals of convergence: Provides High Availability replication can maintain an up-to-date, consistent database on a backup system to provide rapid recovery. If applications are already started and ready to run on the backup system (a hot standby), recovery from a primary system failure can be achieved in minutes or less. This availability is in contrast to the hours or days that it might take to load the database onto a cold backup system, bring up the applications, test the system, and put it into service. Provides Continuous Availability Using bi-directional replication, applications can run in an active/active network. Each processing node in the network has a local copy of the application database. If any node makes a change to its database copy, replication immediately copies that change to every database copy in the application network. Consequently, a business transaction can be sent to any node in the network for load-balancing purposes. Transactions only need to be rerouted to surviving nodes if a processing node fails. Recovery is in seconds, and users connected to the surviving systems see no service interruption at all. Provides Real-Time, Event-Driven Data and Application Integration replication monitors and receives all changes to a source database. It is event-driven, and operates in realtime. Using this capability, applications can be integrated by automatically feeding the results (data changes) from a source application to other databases where it can be used by other applications to implement new functionality. This processing integration can typically be achieved without Page 5 of 17

requiring costly and time-consuming programming. So then, even if a source application fails, target applications still have local access to the last current data provided by the failed application and can continue to provide service. Alternatively, source data changes can be fed directly to target applications for their use (for example via a messaging interface). In either case, replication enables application and data integration and the rapid implementation of new business services by eliminating data and application silos. A Large Canadian Bank Achieves Continuous Availability with Solutions Gravic was awarded the HPE AllianceONE Converged Infrastructure award for its work with a large Canadian bank to dramatically improve the availability of its mission-critical ATM network. With Gravic s help, the bank took a major step towards providing improved service to its customers. It modernized its active/backup data center architecture and reengineered it into an active/active network 3 using Gravic s data replication engine. After the successful update, planned outages for system upgrades have been reduced from hours to minutes, and recovery from an unplanned outage resulting from a system failure or a data center disaster has been reduced by more than 95% from hours to a few minutes. Most importantly, once an outage occurs, the bank s ATM/POS application services are restored to customers much faster, in many cases without the customer even realizing that an outage has occurred. ATM POS BASE24 Uni-directional Replication BASE24 ATM Network Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Issuing Banks Figure 1 The Bank's Original Active/Passive ATM Network Project Overview The bank operates the largest ATM/POS network in Canada. If this network goes down, much of Canadian retail commerce comes to a halt. It uses the BASE24 product from ACI ( to manage its ATM/POS network. BASE24 running on HPE servers is a major application used globally by banks for this purpose. To ensure continuity of service, the bank operates two geographically separated data centers to support its five ATM network regions. In the original active/backup configuration, one site was active, while the other was a passive standby (Figure 1). A copy of the production database was maintained on the backup system by uni-directional data replication. Recovery of the application, regardless if for a planned or unplanned outage, was time-consuming and complex and typically took about four hours. 3 For more information, see the Gravic white paper, Achieving Century Uptimes with Active Active Technology. Page 6 of 17

Recovery from an unplanned outage entailed many stages. The operations staff had to locate bank management in order to make the decision as to whether it would be faster to fail over to the backup system or to attempt recovery of the production system. Before making this decision, the operations staff required analysis of the nature of the fault. When a failover decision was made, applications had to be loaded onto the backup system, its database brought into consistency, the network switched, and the system tested before it could be put into service. At the time, the bank s project manager stated, We needed to improve our application service availability and to provide a better return on our IT investment with a cost-effective and flexible solution. Consequently, the bank decided to dramatically improve its architecture and recovery time by upgrading its network and processing capabilities to handle an active/active architecture. An active/active architecture is a network of independent processing nodes all cooperating in a common application. Since each node has its own copy of the application database, a transaction can be routed to any node in the processing network and processed properly. The database copies are kept synchronized via bidirectional data replication. Whenever a change is made to one database, that change is immediately replicated to all other database copies in the network, so all application instances see the same data. As a consequence, further transactions need only route to surviving nodes if a processing node fails. There is no management failover decision time required, as it is known that the other nodes are operating properly. After all, they are currently processing their own transactions. Recovery for those users affected by a processing node failure can be accomplished in minutes or less. Those users connected to the surviving nodes see no service interruption at all (Figure 2). By using an active/active architecture, the bank actively runs its BASE24 ATM network application across both of its nodes. Unfortunately, its original active/backup replication product had neither the necessary features nor the flexibility that it needed to implement an active/active architecture. ATM POS BASE24 Bi-directional Replication BASE24 POS ATM ATM Network Regions 1, 2 ATM Network Regions 3, 4, 5 Issuing Banks Figure 2 The Bank's New Active/Active ATM Network The bank thus performed an extensive evaluation of available replication solutions to find one that fit its active/active needs. Gravic s product suite was selected to meet its data replication and integration requirements. The line of data replication products provides bi-directional data replication capability with collision avoidance and/or the detection and resolution needed to implement active/active systems ( Page 7 of 17

With its new active/active ATM network, the bank splits processing of its ATM regions between the two systems. If one system fails, all transactions are routed to the surviving system. Failover is so fast that users are usually unaware that there has been a fault. Project Results Previously, when an outage of the primary site occurred, all bank users were affected and were down for several hours. Now when an outage occurs at one of the sites, fewer users are affected (only those connected to that site), and the recovery takes only minutes, a significantly shorter amount of time. More importantly, failover is always to a known-working system and environment, as that site is already actively running the application. The bank no longer worries about whether the disaster recovery target environment will come up. The new architecture also avoids the bank having to pay for idled system capacity. There is no idle standby node. All nodes are performing productive work, and all databases are available for application processing. Other Case Studies In this section we provide examples of the many other ways in which users are taking advantage of software solutions to help deliver on the promise of Converged Infrastructure (particularly by the elimination of IT resource silos to create new, integrated IT services, faster, and at lower cost). Stock Exchange and Clearinghouse Gain Operational and Availability Benefits with Solutions Primary Linux Data Warehouse Standby Linux Data Warehouse MySQL MySQL Clearinghouse AIX Sybase Validation Database SQL/MP SQL/MP Validation Database Active/Passive Data Replication SQL/MP Enscribe Primary HP Standby HP Exchange Trading System Figure 3 The Exchange's Many Uses of Data Replication A regional South American stock exchange embarked on a project to decrease settlement time and improve the accuracy of its trading operations. Commonly referred to as T+3 Settlement in the industry, the stock exchange often ran into issues when it tried to settle the trades in the three allotted days. Additionally, with the industry heading towards the T+0 immediate settlement paradigm, also referred to as Straight- Through Processing (STP) in the industry, the exchange found that it needed to fully automate trading Page 8 of 17

operations to avoid manual re-entry of settlement information. The exchange re-architected its interaction with the clearinghouse to make it fully automated using a data replication solution. The exchange also manages several Linux/MySQL data warehouses that provide trading history to its traders. The exchange was previously updating these data warehouses using a periodic batch update process, which unfortunately led to the data in the warehouse being stale and out of date. Consequently, the exchange decided to replace this process with real-time data replication to keep the data warehouses current. As part of its IT re-architecture process, the exchange also decided to standardize its data replication and business continuity solutions to a common replication vendor. This standardization required heterogeneous uni-directional data replication solutions for the clearinghouse interface and for feeding the data warehouses, as well as bi-directional homogeneous data replication solutions for the exchange s new business continuity architecture. The exchange chose the data replication engine to satisfy these current and future needs. software now plays a major role in integrating the many systems in the exchange s IT infrastructure, as well as providing continuous availability for its mission-critical business services. The exchange s many uses of technology are shown in Figure 3, and are summarized here: Provide active/passive replication between the exchange trading system s HPE servers, for disaster recovery. Both HPE SQL/MP and Enscribe databases are replicated. Replicate the validation data from the clearinghouse s Sybase database running on an IBM AIX to the HPE SQL/MP validation database running on HPE servers (the original requirement to solve the exchange s manual data entry problem). Replicate real-time trading data from the exchange s HPE SQL/MP databases to the data warehouse MySQL databases running on Linux systems (keeping the data warehouse information synchronized with the current state of the exchange s primary trading database). It is the flexibility of the homogeneous and heterogeneous data replication product capabilities that allow it to provide this wide variety of functions, in this case demonstrating its suitability for both business continuity and data and application integration purposes. 10 Large International Tour Operator Utilizes Commodity Servers to Optimize Look-to-Book Processing Query Node Travel Agents Queries Replication Master Booking Transactions Node Add more query as needed Replication Transactions Query Node Queries Internet Internet Travel Companies Figure 4 Tour Operator Multi-node Distributed Heterogeneous Query and Booking System A large, international packaged tour operator depends upon its HPE systems to provide aroundthe-clock services to its travel agent customers as well as to groups and individuals who book reservations on its tours. A characteristic of travel reservation systems is that a customer makes a lot of queries searching for availability and comparing rates for airline seats, hotels, cars, and other services needed to complete a vacation. Only after a great deal of searching does the customer make a decision and book reservations. The ratio of queries to the actual booking transaction is known as the look-to-book ratio. Before the age of the Internet, when travel agents were doing the booking, the booking activity involved 80% to 90% complex queries and 10% to 20% booking transactions. The Internet changed all that. Now users search many sites to find the best deals before booking. The look-to-book ratio has dramatically climbed to perhaps 500 queries or more for every booking. The company installed its HPE system to provide these services before the advent of the Internet, and for years the system performed its functions flawlessly. Then came the Internet with its exploding lookto-book ratios. The load ultimately grew to the point at which the booking system was in peril of running out of capacity. The tour operator faced the problem of expanding the booking system s capacity beyond the capabilities of a single system. Page 10 of 17

The company decided to move to a multi-node, distributed system by placing the query processing and the actual booking transaction processing onto different systems. Its plan was to have one master booking system that handled all booking transactions. This system maintained the master booking database, which was to be replicated to multiple read-only query systems that would handle the heavy query load. The tour operator chose HPE for its master system. The query systems are Windows systems using Microsoft SQL Server (MS SQL). architecture provides the heterogeneous replication between the master booking SQL/MP database and the Windows MS SQL query databases. To provide the reliability that the tour operator needs, some of the query nodes are also HPE systems. In this way, if the master HPE system fails, one of the query nodes can be promoted to be the new master (Figure 4). This multi-node, heterogeneous system architecture has several other advantages. Because it is distributed and replicated, the availability characteristics are very similar to those of active/active systems. It provides, in effect, continuous availability. Planned downtime is also eliminated. To upgrade a query node, queries directed to it are directed to other query nodes. The query node is then taken down, upgraded, and returned to service. In this way, an update is rolled through all query nodes one node at a time, with no service outage. Another advantage is that query systems are located in each of the tour operator s fifteen worldwide offices. Providing this level of data locality significantly decreases the response time of queries and reduces communication costs. The tour operator also took advantage of the new system s data replication facilities to integrate an Operational Data Store (ODS). software replicates data from the master booking node to Windows servers running MS SQL that support a large ODS application used to improve the quality and appeal of the operator s tours. 12 A major provider offers interbank transaction-switching services for the authorization of credit and debit card transactions. It uses a redundant network of HPE computers to implement a credit-card authorization and message switch that gathers the customer transactions from the servicing network, routes them to the appropriate issuing banks for authorization, and then returns the authorization or rejection responses back to the servicing network for delivery to the origination point. active/active replication is used between the HPE servers to provide for continuous service availability. A critical problem faced by the issuing banks is that of fraudulent transactions. The transaction-switching service provider realized that there was an opportunity to provide a unique and important service to the issuing banks. If it could detect suspicious or fraudulent activity in real-time, it could stop fraudulent transactions at the retail counter or at the ATM much sooner, or in some cases, even before they were authorized. This service would be a value-added service that would distinguish it from other ATM/POS switching networks. To implement this system, the switching provider installed multiple high-performance servers that could quickly analyze transactions on-the-fly to determine if they were suspicious. The selected servers were large Sun Solaris servers running Oracle databases. Now, when a transaction is received by a switch node, it is sent not only to the issuing bank for authorization, but it is also replicated in real-time to a fraud detection server via a replication engine. engine routes the transaction to the particular fraud detection server that is monitoring that card or account (Figure 5). The powerful fraud detection system rapidly analyzes the transaction on-the-fly and, if suspicious, notifies the switch node via reverse replication using the replication engine. This real-time fraud detection system is an excellent example of real-time business intelligence (RTBI), in which events as they happen can control the operational actions of an enterprise. Consequently, real-time business intelligence is often referred to as event-driven business intelligence. A fundamental benefit of RTBI systems is that they can integrate in real-time the independent results of diverse heterogeneous systems and consequently affect the actions of an operational system. In the transaction switch described above, RTBI is made possible by the high-performance, heterogeneous bi-directional data replication engine. technology can replicate data between a wide variety of databases and platforms, changing the data as it is replicated to meet the needs of the target application or of the target database s schema. The engine is a high-performance, low-latency replication engine that can typically replicate between platforms in tens to hundreds of milliseconds. It is easily scalable to match any needed replication load and is configurable so that capabilities such as, in this case, routing transactions to the proper fraud detection server are simply added. 14 One of the largest cellular telephone service providers in South Africa holds more than 50% of the cellphone market share in that country. It manages a cell network made up of thousands of cell sites, which provide coverage to over 95% of the South African population. The company also provides cell service to several other African countries, including Tanzania, Mozambique, Lesotho, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In total, over 20 million customers in these countries are serviced by this provider. The prepaid calling card market is the fastest growing cellular service segment in Africa. To handle the volume, the company uses in its production environment three servers with XP storage along with some other ancillary systems. If the prepaid calling card service is not available, much of Africa s cellular service comes to a halt. To ensure the continuous availability of prepaid card service, the heart of this production system is run as an active/active configuration, using data replication between the HPE servers. To improve customer service and business operations, the cellular provider also wanted to integrate the prepaid calling card system (PPFE), with other heterogeneous systems. To achieve this integration, the PPFE feeds several ancillary systems replication is used to transfer information between these systems by replicating database transactions from one system to another (Figure 6). Subscriber web access to prepaid card data is provided by a web server running on a Windows/SQL Server platform. By using a browser, a subscriber can view the available money left in their account, add credit to a card, and transfer money from one cell number to another. bi-directional replication is used by the web server to access data from the PPFE to support a subscriber s requests, and to replicate updated SQL Server data back to the PPFE database, thereby keeping the two databases synchronized. The Billing and Administration system is resident on a Unix system that runs under Oracle. technology is used to replicate the Recharge Logs from the PPFE database to the Oracle database to charge the users accounts for time and other services purchased, and to report on the recharge activity. The cellular provider s Prepaid Recharge System is an excellent example of a heterogeneous system mixing active/active technologies with high-availability systems, all connected by a common data replication engine,. The Suite of Products The Product Suite from Gravic, Inc. ( comprises a set of products that support uni-directional and bi-directional data replication between homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. solutions currently support asynchronous replication, and synchronous replication is on the product roadmap. replication products include the following: is a low-latency asynchronous replication engine using efficient process-to-process data replication, which supports both uni-directional data replication and bidirectional data replication with data-collision detection and resolution. The asynchronous replication engine is the basis for all replication products. It has been used for several decades in thousands of high-demand, mission-critical installations. Zero Data Loss (ZDL) Plus SR, a future technology, is a synchronous data replication engine using coordinated commits 4 for low application latency over long distances. ZDL Plus SR eliminates data loss, but 4 See U.S. Patent 7,177,866 at Page 14 of 17

it also avoids data collisions that can occur in asynchronous active/active replication environments. 5 Zero Data Loss (ZDL), a future technology, is a synchronous data replication engine using coordinated commits similar to ZDL Plus SR. In addition to eliminating data loss, ZDL reduces application latency relative to ZDL Plus SR by safe-storing rather than applying replicated data during the source transaction. Unlike ZDL Plus SR, ZDL does not preclude the possibility of data collisions in active/active replication environments. The target database maintained by replication products is fully transaction-protected. All transactions applied to the source database are also applied to the target database in the same order. Consequently, the target database is a consistent copy of the source database and may be used by applications on the target system with no concern about data inconsistencies. Companies use the replication products to build active/passive systems for disaster recovery (recovery typically in minutes) and active/active systems or sizzling-hot-standby (SZT) systems for disaster tolerance (recovery typically in seconds). Additionally, by replicating data throughout the enterprise, products are used to eliminate data and application silos, thereby enabling application and data integration, application modernization, and the delivery of new business services. Summary Converged Infrastructure is HPE s roadmap to the Instant-On Enterprise. Critical to the success of this initiative is the participation of third party solution providers to create products that interoperate to offer virtualized assignment of resources, superior availability for mission-critical services, modernization of applications via application integration, and common management. The Canadian bank rapidly implemented an active/active system using the Gravic bidirectional replication engine, as described above. It was for this success that HPE awarded Gravic the 2011 HPE AllianceONE Partner Awards for Innovation in Converged Infrastructure Solutions. The suite of products brings to the Converged Infrastructure the ability for mission-critical applications to provide high and continuous availability, recovery from faults in minutes and even seconds, with little or no data loss. It also provides the mechanisms to effectively and efficiently integrate data and applications, enabling the rapid deployment of new capabilities for the enterprise. 5 Contact Gravic, Inc. for the availability of these features.
